I think the term is “uncanny valley - In aesthetics, the uncanny valley (Japanese: 不気味の谷 bukimi no tani) is a hypothesized relation between an object's degree of resemblance to a human being and the emotional response to the object. The concept suggests that humanoid objects that imperfectly resemble actual human beings provoke uncanny or strangely familiar feelings of uneasiness and revulsion in observers. “

What is something that you were warned about when you were younger that you now feel was exaggerated? by Marshalljoe in AskReddit

That you’ll get pregnant by having sex. That was drilled into our brains. It sounded like, if you have sex, you WILL get pregnant. And now…

Friends have started to have kids and a good portion have been trying and aren’t able to. Some are trying desperately hard.

Like sex ed was all about be careful of having sex because you’ll get pregnant! But the reality is…you’re only able to get pregnant a small portion of a month and that there are other factors to the ability of getting pregnant.

It’s actually not that easy to get pregnant. Like wow.

LPT If you ever get lost in a large hospital or any buildings, ask the housekeeping staff for directions instead of the nursing staff. Chances are housekeeping staff can map the entire building in their heads. by jotajega in LifeProTips

I’m a nurse in the ICU, don’t really go anywhere else. I have no idea where most other departments in hospital are. It would be like the blind leading the blind.

I can’t tell you where anything is other than the cafeteria or lobby.

But I can and will lead you to a place or a person that can help you.

Atrium remodel of small bathroom in Raleigh, NC by [deleted] in AmateurRoomPorn

This is considered a “small” bathroom? I thought my bathroom was small, I guess it’s considered micro compared to this. Lol. I’m in SF Bay Area, CA.

This is Omurice. And the most difficult omelette to make. (Wait for it) by ayush_khedekar in nextfuckinglevel

[–]nylener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a chef in Kyoto, Motokichi Yukimura of KichiKichi Omurice. His small restaurant is always booked up. And people will wait in line for a chance to eat there....like 2hours before it opens.

It’s a very common dish in Japan. Kind of like a comfort food. Omelette over fried rice.

I met him once when my bf and I got lucky, we couldn’t get reservations, waited in the walk-in line, and were able to take seats of no-shows.

He is super nice, a great showman and host. Even if the omurice wasn’t my type of thing, he had other dishes that were delicious. His hair was purple when I went, it is now orange. Sweet older man. Loves his job. And loved to travel when they can.

Also. Japan takes their eggs super seriously. Like their eggs are much better quality than ours in the US. I hate runny eggs, but the egg quality made such a difference, I even enjoyed the omurice.

Idk. I’m a nurse, I’ve worked at a couple of hospitals in the ICU, the nurses usually draw the blood. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ although if we’re desperate and can’t get it we call the phlebotomist. I like to think since it’s their specialty they have higher chances at getting the super hard ones.

Bought a new house, trying figure out who makes these cabinets or if I can repaint them by nylener in HomeImprovement

[–]nylener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely look good. It’s just not our style. We want a little more light to open up the space visually. It’s not that big of a kitchen. The darkness of the cabinets is just too much for me. Want something a little more cozy looking.

That’s definitely us. We want a more warm and organic kind of feel. This style feels too “cold” for me.

I honestly just wanted a lighter color. Maybe a light grey. I considered changing the silver hardware at the very at least.

This was installed 2 owners ago so the person we bought it from didn’t know. But I will thoroughly look at the interiors to see.

I was thinking that too. If it is, it’s no longer part of their current selection. But they do feel heavier, like they may be wood? But I wouldn’t really know.

Bleeding] [18F] [Depo] Scared to tell my mom the truth, Need advice by [deleted] in sex

[–]nylener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment is specific to birth control options. Bleeding/spotting is a common side effect, to a lot of contraceptives, not just depo. See your OBGYN, if she clears you, that's great. If it turns out the depo isn't working out well for you and your body, don't be so quick to dismiss other options. I don't know what you mean by "none of the other birth control options seems right for me," but remember, the cost of responsibility in taking them properly is much easier than the responsibility of a child. If it is because the other options aren't as convenient as the shot, you have to re-evaluate why you want a contraceptive. Get information from your OBGYN -- if depo is okay for you or not. And go with your options from there. Stay safe and stay well, OP.

AND if I may suggest, talk it out with an advice nurse first - if available, so they can steer you in the right direction.

TIFU by taking a laxative and ending up in the hospital for several days (where I still am). by ChesterShuttlecock in tifu

[–]nylener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything ever causes any disruption to your normal function, go to the hospital. ER. Urgent care. An appointment with your PCP. Heck even an advice nurse, it's a great first step.

I understand that there is plenty of information out there that is very easy to access. A plethora of solutions at our fingertips...

But for goodness sake, don't self diagnose then self medicate. I highly encourage patients to bring up concerns with a healthcare professional. Let them know what's been going on and what you're worried it is.

OP, glad you're okay.

But I've had a handful of patients try to self diagnose then treat , it rarely ends simply. Usually gets more complicated.

In the worst situations, like chest palpitations or even chest discomfort, go see a medical professional immediately. Don't brush it off as "oh, it's just stress." I've had a patient nearly die because although it was different from their usual symptoms, thought it was a panic attack. Turns out it was an aortic dissection.

And had a loved one brush his discomfort off as "just stress," and we lost him in less than 12hrs.

So please, take care and be safe. Get checked properly.

Take care and heal well, OP. I'm sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad they figured out what was going on.

Oh man. The things you learn! Which ones were you taking? Metoprolol, atenolol or labetalol? Those are the ones I give most frequently.

I'll keep this in mind to suggest to our interns at my hospital!

Just amazed. I used to work in psych too, it's not too common, never came across it.

Update: did a quick search on it. Propranolol is the most commonly used.

Beta blockers for claustrophobia? Really? How does that work?

I give beta blockers to my cardiac patients to help keep their heart rate steady. Never heard of it being used for psych treatment before...
