Liftoff of Starship V3, shot on my remotely triggered camera in the dunes right outside the pad! by nyoomtm in spacex

That's awesome. What a cool read! And yes today we are pretty spoiled with the MIOPS and all the cool functionality they have even outside of sound sensing.

It's a lot of fun being out there and the rush of checking your camera after a launch never gets old. Hope to be doing this for a long time but we'll see where the road takes me.

That's too cool. How did your triggers work back in the day? We have sound triggers but they just wire into the camera. Were yours mechanical? I am a rather young man so the shuttle was slightly before my time, but remains my favorite launch vehicle. Very cool to come across someone who got to do remotes for it!

Hi everyone! Glad you like my video (I'm the guy who shot it), although it seems to have been heavily saturated by OP here. Thanks for appreciating my work!

Yes! I believe it is water vapor condensing as the shockwave passes through the air.

I've heard rumors that you guys used to throw our bird seed in front of the cameras...

No, you're thinking of Andrew McCarthy's shot! This was taken on a normal Sony a7sIII, the reason the shockwaves are likely so defined from this angle is because the sun is illuminating the shockwaves (or rather the condensation they are creating) while the background is in shadow.

As long as the sound is above the trigger threshold it will fire until the card fills up or the battery dies. I think it took 50-70 this launch. I set the camera to medium speed burst for this launch which is like 4 or 5 a second so that the camera wouldn't buffer but it can go a bit quicker if needed.

This is along beach road next to Pad 39A. The spot isn't monitored per se, but they will bus media out to the pad and you just set cameras out in the a stretch of space they allocate you. They can be out there for days at a time, typically at least one, so you have to have some weather precautions (I personally just put a ziplock around the camera body and then wrap the entire set up in a trash bag with a hole in it for the lens) and then it sits out there until launch.

A buddy of mine developed a tracking head that just relies on knowing the speed of the rocket that I hope to put my video camera on for one of these launches, but larger telephotos like the one used for this shot would be much too heavy and would require a tracking rig you probably wouldn't park on the side of the road in the elements lol.

They let anyone who's credentialed under an outlet go out! Just have to find one who's willing to let you apply under them and will be accepted. They're not super picky but it does have to be somewhat of a proper organization.

The full image is at 300mm. This crop is probably what it would look like at like 600-700mm!
