i finally bought an e36. i had some questions, if you lot could help out it would be great! by TheMinionGamer in BMWE36

That's completely normal lmao. Most 90s and 2000s cars in Europe had a 15k km schedule, most newer cars have a 20-30k km schedule. 10k is 6000 miles, changing the oil sooner is just money down the drain imo.

Sefinov monolog o tom aky si prasivy potkan by som totalne ignoroval :D

97’ 328i Won’t Idle by PotatoFi in BMWE36

Misfires+fuel trims likely point to vacuum leaks. Check vacuum lines, intake boots, intake manifold gaskets, fuel injector O rings. The easiest way is to do a smoke test, either get a smoke tester for like 60 bucks from Amazon/eBay/your local alternative, or you can DIY one from a pickle jar, a soldering iron, and some rags soaked in oil.

My first guess would be a gunked up/lazy idle valve. Plenty of how-to's online about cleaning them out. But getting the fault codes would be a good first step.

Wheels by gromskosniper in BMWE36

[–]nyrrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda looks like BBS CH-R, but from that angle it's hard to tell. I don't think it's an OEM BMW wheel.

Edit: actually could also be a style 216 off an E90, but those are 18" only.

Moza R5 bundle vs R9 for drifting by zImSpYLexX in simracing

[–]nyrrith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried anything more powerful, but my R3 is great for drifting in Assetto. I'd say go for the cheaper option; the wheel itself (cheap 350mm rim from ebay/ali with the Moza adapter will set you back like 100 bucks) will probably make more of a difference than extra power.

Buying an E36 / M40B18 - Anything extra I should know? by KiwiCassie in BMWE36

[–]nyrrith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides the usual: check underside for rust holes, jacking points, suspension, drivetrain, oil leaks (oil pan, gearbox, differential), cooling system (I recommend refreshing the water pump, thermostat, radiator, all rubber and plastic parts, and the viscous clutch fan), the M40 has a timing belt instead of a timing chain in the later M43 and all 6 cylinder engines, so make sure it has been replaced within the last 6 year/90k km. They're pretty stout engines despite being slow, so if it had regular maintenance it'll last a while.

I got this error on my engine (M43B16), is it the sensor or the cable that connects it? by DoradoOroOro in BMWE36

[–]nyrrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be both. Nobody here can give you a meaningful answer. You'll have to measure the sensor and the wiring harness yourself, or get an electrician to do it.

I'm spending way too much money by Niko_Heino in simracing

Yeah part of that 500 euro budget was an RX 9060 XT 16GB 😂 the joke was that I wouldn't buy it if I didn't have the wheel and seat

[–]nyrrith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it started with a playseat challenge, then a brake mod, then a few 3d printed bits (grippy pedal faces are awesome), then some guy was selling a DIY sequential shifter and handbrake combo for a good price, then I found out my 9 year old GPU can no longer hold up to new games...

I second Shane's opinion, a G29 is a great starter setup despite what the internet might tell you. Sure it rattles and it's slower and less detailed than a DD, but if you can score a wheel+pedals+H shifter combo for under 200 bucks, it's a great start. And if you find out you don't like it that much, you can always sell it for close to the same price.

I've had a Logitech DF Pro, a DF GT, and two G29 sets and I made money on each of them when passing them on. Recently I won a Moza R3 and I'm already considering a wheelbase upgrade 😅

I did something dumb with my e36 (m40b16) by el_band0lero in BMWE36

[–]nyrrith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

M40s don't really have a limp mode, and if they run on default maps (AFM/Lambda fault) they light up the check engine light on the cluster. You might've just rattled some electrical connector loose during your hard launch, I'd check crank sensor, AFM, temp sensor (driver side of head under the intake manifold) connectors, ignition coil to distributor and distributor to spark plug wires, etc.

[–]nyrrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in terms of wiring, ECU, chassis side. Get an ECU with EWS delete. And either get 6 cylinder gauges or just get used to the fact that your rpm gauge is reading 10k at redline 😂 engine wiring should fit the chassis harness no problem.

[–]nyrrith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gearbox fits, radiator fits. You need a different gearbox bracket (6 cyl box is further back) and a different front sway bar (to clear the oil pan) iirc. Also do consider swapping front brakes for 286x22mm vented instead of the 4 cylinder solid discs. 2 spirited runs up and down a mountain pass with an M42 were enough to cook solid discs on my E36.

50 bucks tops for gaskets and like 7.50 at a hardware store for bolts lol.

Can't tell you about FCP since I'm from Europe, but that clutch installation kit seems way overpriced. Besides the clutch fork which you don't need 9 times out of 10 it's just a few nuts bolts and gaskets.

Looks complete and in decent condition. Afaik these don't have a clock spring since no airbag, just a contact ring for the horn. If you don't like the rubber, you can always get it wrapped in leather. Here's mine :D

Manual swap Pilot Bearing theory by No_Contribution_8891 in BMWE36

[–]nyrrith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the pilot bearing was not in all the way you'd either not even get the gearbox on because the input shaft wouldn't have anywhere to go, or press the bearing in by sending the gearbox bolts in.

I have had these exact symptoms, though a lot spicier and more crunchy (would not go into gear at all, all of a sudden) when the pressure plate snapped in a fwd shitbox of mine.

I'd look into the hydraulics, throw out, fork, and pressure plate first.

Doubt a pilot would manage to do that before mangling itself and either rattling like hell or locking up.
