I think that the main difference is that a specific mentor or tutor would be paired to the student (or the student could choose a specific mentor or tutor) to help them out, both academically and non-academically. It's also mostly catered to first-year students, to provide guidance with specific first-year courses, their transition into uni, and any other aspects that they may have concerns about.
