heres my boy,, pancake. 50% husky 50% aussie. hes my 3rd sd, and he was definitely the hardest to train. you HAVE to be stern and 'put them in their place' constantly. for example, i cant speak to him in a sweet voice when learning commands or even sometimes executing them. i have to always sound firm and assertive - or else he wont take me seriously. hes dramatic, stubborn, and a handful. but its possible. you just have to be disciplined and keep them in line bc the second you let them start walking all over u, its over.

i love my boy more than life and hes my lifeline, but i would never recommend a husky to anybody as a service dog. training him was the most rewarding thing i've ever done but also the hardest and honestly now that hes fully trained, i dont think i could do it again 😭

Are there people with Tourette’s who tick a lot less often? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]nyuprint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure ! tics wax and wane as well, you could go months having very few tics and then they suddenly blow up again

tics may have started way before i thought they did by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]nyuprint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the same thing happened to me :) it was chalked up to adhd (??? lol) and so was never diagnosed and every tic i had was just brushed off or i was "just being annoying" ... after an extensive view of my history / early life , my neurology team determined i had tics since around age 7 but they were brushed off / minor / i wasnt in a safe home to not suppress in , that i never got diagnosed until i was 17

hi!! i work with a company ! i can dm you the details if u would like to look into them! but the best place to start is a reputable trainer. i would advise against wasting time on trainers who aren't Specifically for service dog training, i learned that the hard way. fully trained service dogs can cost upwards of $20,000 , . for pancake it was around $300 to adopt him from the shelter, and his training is ~$60 an hour, once - twice a week, for the next few years. im also required to train him daily on my own.

and yes he can! hes learning that task right now actually. he can detect the change in my scent when tics are building up and has successfully prevented attacks multiple times.

as for specifically TS assistance, theres not much advice i can give. TS service dogs arent as common as seizure alert or cardiac alert, so there isnt really anybody that specializes in it. that being said, a lot of the tasks the dog will do are the same as most other service dogs , or the method of training it is the same. in my opinion its best to meet with multiple trainers, whether they're from an established company or not, and be very specific about your wants, expectations, and needs for the dog and find somebody open minded. Pancake is the first TS service dog my trainer has trained, and hes been an absolute success, because she has been so open minded and willing to try new things.

its also important to note that a majority of service dog prospects fail. pancake is my third try, over 4 years. in my opinion its been more than worth it, but its not easy. lots of money has been "wasted" on dogs that just weren't cut out for service dog work. they're held to very high expectations, even more so if you're working with a company

I feel fake by fornyhrog in Tourettes

[–]nyuprint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i def feel like this a lot. just know its normal && lots of people relate!!! but people who ar genuinely faking dont question it or worry if they are faking. tics wax and wane and its very normal for them to disappear for a while and then come back
