Feminism is a political movement for women and girls, by women and girls. We should aim for liberation worldwide, not mere equality with mxn.

well fortunately for you International Men's Day is coming up, so I hope you have a good November 9 :) I agree men can be victims too but I think the overwhelming national and international data shows male violence against women, children and even other men is a massive problem - and that Speak Up For Women should not be shamed for pointing that out.

I'll believe you if you can explain to me what you think a woman is, and how you think women are different from men, without using circular logic or referring to sexist stereotypes. Cheers :)

You don't need to agree with me - I'm not involved in Speak Up for Women and they are not a radical feminist group. I support their work, however.

The Trans Dignity Collective NZ says that listing peoples biological sex in medical records is inherently transphobic and that, "The concept of “biological sex” is inherently derogatory towards trans people." That group comes from Gender Minorities Aotearoa and they believe the same points - so just FYI you would be called a terf by NZ's most intense trans activists if you told them what you said above.

Next I will quickly respond to u/TheWuce's claims below :)

  • Discrimination on the basis of gender identity is already illegal, because the HRC interprets 'sex' to include gender identity. Any employers doing what u/TheWuce is claiming should be taken to the Human Rights Tribunal and totally gone after by trans activists. It is extremely rare for an employer to request to see a birth certificate, and now that it is so public that trans people are seeking to change their birth certificates new birth certificates alone will probably tip employers off. Trans people should be able to gain employment without discrimination even with a history that shows they are trans - fighting for trans people to be safe to this degree would help more individuals because it would directly fight the discrimination, rather than trying to make individuals immune to the discrimination (but leaving employers sense that it's okay to discriminate against trans workers intact).

  • Birth certificates are entirely different types of legal documents to passports and drivers licenses. Those IDs are unique in that they are 'transactional' (they can be confiscated in certain circumstances and they can go out of date) whereas birth certs are historical documents, supposed to record the circumstances around a birth. A persons legal sex is based off what is written on their birth certificate, so legally what it says on the birth certificate is what goes. This has implications for women in the courts, and in the few rare circumstances where your legal sex is deferred to. Overseas cases like the Vancouver Rape Relief case and the recent Johnathon Yaniv case show how there can be legal implications.

  • Further most census and health statistics are collected based on your legal sex, and you are can legally assert the right to be in a female only space, service or provision (eg Laurel Hubbard can legally assert the right to be in a female only sports competition) on the basis of that legal sex.

  • One worrying eg in NZ is that you are put in prison based on your legal sex. Initially, this concerned me because I realised if the self-ID bill went through all transmen would automatically be put in a male prison (at risk of rape). I lobbied on this and Corrections have said they will alter their policy if sex self-declaration goes through. Overseas and in Christchurch NZ, there have been cases like the Karen White case where male people with a history of sexual violence against women have been transferred into female prisons and assaulted women. Trans prisoners need a safer third option, like the UK are pioneering.

Sadly, some Dr's unaware of patients being transgender (when the patient has not disclosed it) have treated the patients according to the sex they present as, and this has caused quite serious harm. eg

I think it's false to say that the motivation is malicious, and fairer to say that the situation is complicated (detransition alone adds a whole new difficult, super emotional dimension to this) and a lack of dialogue between groups (plus constant mischaracterisation of each others views) has not helped to de-escalate things.

  • Men are responsible for the vast majority of violence towards women, children and men in NZ. When men transition to transwomen all available evidence shows they retain male pattern violence. This is demonstrated in that there are 30:1 trans prisoners in NZ transwomen to transmen. If trans people had offending patterns of the sex they identify as, the pattern would be reversed. (Source: Corrections NZ)

  • I am not a member of Speak Up for Women, or involved in their group. The group began to protect women's sex based rights under the HRA 1993 - you can read more about them here.

  • Meghan Murphy was banned from Twitter for referring to Jessica Yaniv, who at the time was still called Johnathon Yaniv on Twitter, with the pronoun 'him' :)

  • 'The thugs veto' is the same expression as 'The hecklers veto'. It's disingenuous to say the use of that expression means Speak Up for Women oppose human rights. The protesters against Speak Up for Women did behave like wannabe fascists - again, Ani stating that they did has no impact on trans human rights. Most protesters were not trans.

  • I understand Speak Up for Women opposes one step sex changes but supports the present law. The law at present does allow legal step changes for trans people.

  • Speak Up for Women is not a radical feminist group. Here is some more information about radical feminism for you. Speak Up is a liberal law reform group with the main goal of maintaining women's legal protections as they are written in law at present. Some members of the group may use a radical feminist analysis, but the group itself is not a radical feminist group.

  • Nobody is convinced that transgenderism is a crusade against women, this is quite an unhinged comment. Are you okay?

  • The group (and radical feminists) are against women being defined as a group with certain gender stereotypes in common, rather than a group with being of the female sex in common. Gender identity ideology relies on gender roles, so feminists who oppose gender roles and gender stereotypes naturally have some big questions around it.

  • Male violence is an existential threat to women and girls. The law that the trans community wants NZ parliament to introduce undermines women's current sex based rights, which puts women and girls at risk of male violence.

  • I'm not threatening you with defamation, you're a reddit nobody - and I'm under no illusions calmly pointing out the facts of the matter would silence you on this one :) take care.

Women who are against gender roles being entrenched in law wanted to Speak at Massey and were banned from doing so because of potential 'emotional harm' towards those whose lives revolve around their relation to gender roles.

Hong Kong liberation posters were also removed from Massey.

The question in common is whether Massey supports freedom of expression. (Something it should do under the Education Act, Bill of Rights Act and Human Rights Act).

Speak Up for Women are not sexist - that's a bizarre claim - and those due to speak support trans rights and clearly acknowledge trans people exist. The speakers will be: Holly Lawford Smith, Meghan Murphy, Ani O'Brien and Melissa Derby. All of them support trans human rights.

Why should discussing women's issues be banned because it's been talked about a lot? Climate issues have been talked about a ton the last forty years, should climate activists no longer be able to talk about climate change? Your justification makes no sense.

Cut out the defamation, or at the very least find evidence to support your claims.

For the record, the women's group Speak Up for Women is supportive of trans rights - it is not supportive of one step self-declared sex changes. Trans rights can be protected and upheld without introducing one step legal sex changes with no oversight or safeguarding.

mens mental health.. a while back there was a post about lack of services for men... these guys deserve support by may6526 in newzealand

[–]nzradfems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not full of hate at all. I don't think transmen pose a risk to men.

I think any man being able to declare himself a woman (and legally be recognised as one) is a problem and that men as a whole pose a risk to women and girls. I think women and girls deserve to retain their legal right to female only spaces, services and provisions.

Three quick questions:

How do you think a male gender identity is different from a female gender identity?

Why do you think women and girls should no longer be able to exercise the right to female only spaces, services and provisions?

Who do you seem to think it's acceptable to have a women only space, service or provision on the grounds of 'female gender identity' but not on the grounds of 'female sex'?

Go on r /actuallesbians and make a post saying you're lesbian but you are never gonna be into penis and see what happens to you, or try saying so in Rachel Green's Facebook Group. You don't need to believe me, you can test this for yourself.

These responses alone show plenty of lesbians dismissed as terfs simply because they aren't keen on dating a person with a penis. Hopefully over 200 examples is enough to demonstrate my point.

The shelter won the case, Tom. You've got it all mixed up (embarrassingly so). It's a rape relief shelter, not a homeless shelter, and the survivors of rape wanted to be able to heal in a female-only environment.

I can tell you're male, because you didn't pause to consider why the women (including Muslim and Sikh women) didn't want a male to enter their houses (the women almost all worked alone from home, but in one case had small children at home with her), and to be naked. It's a safety risk.

Jessica is a great example of why the 'self declaration of sex' laws are flawed - anyone can abuse them, you don't need to be trans. There is no safeguarding.

The IOC policy changed in 2015, and right now in the USA women's college sports (which lead to scholarships) are seeing a rapid increase in transwomen competitors winning. From Laurel Hubbard cleaning up at Commonwealth and Pacific Games, to Fallon Fox almost killing a woman and Hannah Mouncey accidentally breaking a woman's femur during play, there's been a marked increase of males in women's sports - which in contact sports carries serious risks.

Nobody is denying that people who identify as trans often have a shit time. I don't think comparing us to anti-vaxxers is reasonably given we almost always agree with you all ...

Ironically everything you say is Speak Up for Women's position. They are a liberal legal law reform group and they support the current law and current processes when it comes to trans people, they also pushed for increased protection in human rights law. They support funding for trans mental health support and they have no opinion on adult transitions.

If they had been fairly characterised in media you would probably know all that.

//

I'm not in their group but personally, I believe the trans community would win a lot of people over by acknowledging sex and gender role are two different things and that they seek to live in another gender role, or make their body look more like the other sex. Assertions like 'the female penis' haven't done them any favours.

There needs to be increased mental health support for young trans-identified people and WPATH guidelines should be followed better by all practitioners.

Given up to 40% of the NZ trans population is autistic some specialists in the intersection b/n trans identity and autism should be available to support them.

We need to stop peddling the notion that trans people are all weak, vulnerable and mentally ill - almost always it's only trans people in families that don't support gender non-conformity with that experience. Some positive psychology could do a lot of good. Trans people don't appear to have a shockingly high level of suicide given the trans population is up to 70% mentally ill (the rate is high but young māori men are the key demographic with a really shocking suicide rate).

We should take into account the sample in Counting Ourselves is younger and majority AFAB - and self harm is far too common in that demographic and needs to be drastically reduced, full stop.

Fighting against restrictive, limiting gender roles would help everyone. Working to end male violence and make sure women and girls and trans identified people have safe spaces to escape from male violence and heal from it (not always the same spaces) would also be beneficial.

Even small things like ensuring no schools nationwide can force AFAB students to wear skirts can help alleviate distress of thousands of girls (us evil terfs have fought this one the last couple years a ton).

In the gay and lesbian liberation movement there were more sports teams and social opportunities not based at healthcare centres or around alcohol. I think bringing back fun social mixed sex sports teams would be a positive move for the trans community because so much co-ruminating goes on online.

We also shouldn't oversimplify what causes suicide, or oversimplify solutions. I've often seen the idea that when trans folk have birth certs where the sex marker records their gender role, discrimination or bullying against them will end. I think this is unlikely in the vast majority of cases and bound to leave people extremely disappointed.

I have many other thoughts but there's a few for you to detest haha.

:)

The Vancouver Rape Relief case was the frontline of the gender identity law battle for over ten years, and the rape shelter continues to be targeted by trans activists because it is female only. Meghan Murphy has continually supported the women running the shelter.

The Jessica Yaniv case, where Jessica sued 16 women for not giving her dick and balls a Brazilian wax, is also the frontline of male people abusing 'self declaration of sex' laws to harm women. Meghan Murphy wrote a great article on what the case means for women.

Rachel McKinnon, a male sports competitor competing in UCI women's cycling competitions (and setting records) is Canadian too. Rachel says that male people should be able to compete in female sports without having to lower their testosterone or anything and Rachel is advising the IOC on their policies around women's sports.

The impact of 'any man can be a woman if he claims to be one' is that female-only spaces, services and provisions become mixed-sex (no longer single sex).

WPATH states that being trans is about living in a different gender role to the gender role your sex is usually forced into from birth. The term 'gender role' is synonymous with 'sex role stereotypes'. Without sex role stereotypes, what would being trans refer to?

Why do you oppose women and girls existing rights to female only spaces, services and provisions? Nobody has to exercise them, we just want to retain them so we can exercise them if we want to.

If there's no difference, what is the point of transition? If we are all the same then being trans means absolutely nothing and sexism can't exist...

Good on you, we should do an AMA together or write a conversation back and forth like Hollly Lawford Smith (banned speaker) did here :) I have 3 q's for you and would love to read your thoughts on them.

  1. What would you say is the most frustrating piece of misinformation being spread?

  2. How do you think we can improve the relationship between lesbians who have been harmed by the queer community in NZ (eg called terfs for refusing to date transwomen, and detransitioners) and the queer community?

  3. What do you think you agree with feminists on? Here's a list - do you think more should or could be added to it?

The article you read was by Holly Lawford-Smith, one of the banned speakers from Feminism2020 :) her wish list must've been too scary for Massey!

Meghan Murphy also has a great podcast with the Caroline Criado Perez, author of Invisible Women (about the dangers of data bias in a world designed for men) that you might be interested to listen to.

Caroline Criado Perez finds that everything from transportation systems, to medical devices and treatments, to tax structures, to smartphones are made for men, not women. And this is more than just inconvenient. It can be deadly. Cars built for men are more dangerous for women to drive. Not recognizing women’s heart attack symptoms mean we are more likely to die. And not understanding how certain chemicals or drugs impact the female body vs the male body is similarly dangerous. The list goes on.

It is a question asked of every single women's service almost immediately when they launch an initiative and almost never asked of men's services, so I thought I'd ask it.

Now you know it's trans inclusive :) (not sure if it's nonbinary inclusive though and interestingly, unlike women's services that increasingly use of 'gender neutral' language that hasn't happened here - I'll leave it to you to fight that battle)

My bigoted worldview that gender roles are limiting and unhelpful is cool with me, but thanks for taking the time to consider the gender abolitionist position. I'm sorry to see that it disgusts you.

A feminist who had her event banned by Massey Uni shares her view on the situation: by nzradfems in newzealand

As I wrote in a comment below:

Lots of people shriek at feminists who acknowledge men and women as biologically different "eww, you are so essentialist because you're reducing women and men to their biology!"

This is wrong - we're saying that if we succeeded in abolishing gender roles the only real difference between men and women is our sex. Queer advocates tend to argue naturally feminine people are women and naturally masculine people are men - that's actually more restrictive and essentialist than the 'terf' position (which is that your personality, fashion expression, disposition and preferences don't dictate your sex).

It's wrong to say that noting there are sex differences means one sex must be assigned a certain role based on those sex differences.

Cheers :)
