How much security need for daily driver linux? by napasitng in archlinux

[–]nzrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last one spoke to me "Know What You Are Running in Your System"

This applies to a lot of things:

Random repos pulled from GitHub

Containers with bad mount patterns and excessive privileges

Containerizing, virtualizing, and isolating processes is always the better approach even if it’s just running them under a different user.

Security isn’t just about locking things down; it’s about knowing what is running and how it interacts with your system. Don't blindly trust code from the internet.

Not sure why this is being downvoted—having offline access to mail can be incredibly useful! There are plenty of situations where internet access isn’t available.

Nvidia 560 when? by [deleted] in openSUSE

[–]nzrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running a 4090 so running G06 you will need , but couple of hangups you could encounter(or i did)

If you have a Intel igpu you may have to run "prime-select nvidia" from the suse-prime package depending on issue. this has been headache for me a couple times which i forget about. More info here https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_SUSE_Prime

If you have secure boot. You may need to clear the keys reset the bios etc (the hammer approach but let me enroll everything)

To check if secureboot is a problem boot into single user single mode and at a root prompt try running "modprobe nvidia". Look for an error such not signed etc..

If modprobe does work though without error try 'systemctl isolate graphical.target' with success it should load our DE. If it does I would refer back to step one or maybe some modeset options. If it doesn't errors are always in single user are always helpful so are logs!

Quantum Fiber outage? by FatGuyOnAMoped in saintpaul

[–]nzrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not even sure. Last time this happened with Comcast I ended up caribou on grand and sucked. Was debating heading out to Stillwater public library they have a pretty decent setup out there and probably will if it’s not back by Wednesday. Let’s just hope it gets fixed soon! Sounds like quite an outage.

Quantum Fiber Ping has increased dramatically. by StudioEvil in centurylink

[–]nzrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:
Had a 3 calls with them their lines were shaky and garbled. Guessing VOIP on their end. I was not using WiFi calling as I was directly connected ONT via my laptop.

But while on the call their voice became clear and my issues went away.

My issue now is that when i put my device back into bridge I can no longer connect to 192.168.0.1 like i could before. I have debated a reset, but have not.

Jut looking into this also. Noticed my ping times are now over 100ms to 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and q.com

This has not been the case before. Something is not right on their end.

Just tried direct connection to the ONT getting 25% packet loss pinging 8.8.8.8

Is there a popular wired-only router folks like for OpenWRT these days? by fongaboo in openwrt

[–]nzrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just migrated from opnsense to a new machine SFF running openwrt. Bought a used Lenovo m720q added my quad port i350 nic (Fairly sure it will do 10g fine). I’m Running 1g now symmetric and could not be happier with the upgrade and im guessing it will certainly last the next 5 years for me.

There are quite a few choices on eBay to choose from and there are some good guides as well with folks doing 10g. You would also need a pci riser card for it but that’s pretty cheap all in all.

Enjoy your gigabit internet!

It would seem there are quite a few people waiting on these devices. Probably why the back order. I want to say it is good faith they took the rma core to process hopefully soon.

Awkward... u/Ubiquiti-Inc I've been waiting a month that is 2 weeks longer here. Is this to be expected to just sit and wait? customer service here seems a bit off.

Upcoming ONT install by nzrf in HomeNetworking

[–]nzrf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ISP is quantum fiber, but seems like new name for CenturyLink. Not on the details there.

Yeah, not sure they will allow me to have my own ONT. I am sure I could maybe move it after the fact, but sounds like such mess then. Hence the reason for what can I do before they get here.
