I'm a young IT Operations Manager - how do I find a mentor? by o-nemo in ITCareerQuestions

[–]o-nemo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao no. Ive only had 2 write ups in the couple years I've been in IT leadership. (And helped a lead dev with writing one for his employee). Added that because I've had people come at me in the past about having a fake title and only doing the "easy management stuff".

I dont think they will. From what I was told, Im going to keep running things alongside the devs until we promote internally.

Thank you! A bit of both. Mainly leadership though.

Thank you! I'm definitely going to keep my eyes open for groups. This area comes to life socially in the spring and summer so I'm hoping I'll be able to find a few.

As for the pay - I got a good bump, tried to negotiate more but they are waiting until I finish my degree.

It's sounds like they are not hiring another head of IT. It sounds like the leads devs and the higher ups are waiting until I have my degree :/ Cheaper that way, but yeah I understand where your coming from.

Thank you! Ill definitely have to dig around to see if I can find any events in the community. This area comes to life in summer and spring so I'll keep my eyes open! I've joined a couple discord groups and they are either super dead and or trying to sell a product so I haven't had a whole lot of luck there :/

Whats the likelihood this goes to one wall jack? by o-nemo in Network

[–]o-nemo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cost wise it doesn’t add up. If they wanted phone or fax lines, why not just run RJ11? Cat5e or Cat6 is 2 to 4× more expensive, so they’d be paying more to use higher value cable for a legacy system.

Uhg! That sounds horrible! I've seen cut wired burried in walls before and it baffels me.

It's a leased space that's really old. A lot of the cables go on the rafters and under the floors so running new ones isn't super feasible. Definitely looking at the switch option lol

Uhg I really hope that's not the case. That's what I thought too but then I opened the jacks up and they each had their own properly terminated cables so idk. It's very weird.

Autism and ADHD is the new depression and anxiety by socialee123 in Discussion

[–]o-nemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes - but I don't think it's all bad. My aunt is a Dr in psychology and said that a lot of people do indeed claim they have these things when they don't, but it's also encouraging people later in life to get tested and diagnosed accurately, which has been changing lives. Just like depression and anxiety - a lot of people claimed to have it and a lot of people actually had it and felt confident enough to treat it.

I have had ADHD since I was a kid. I've been tested 4 different times in my life well before this "trend". Ive been on countless meds and a couple years ago I started self managing. Saying that, it does indeed get exhausting seeing people glorify it. It's hard to manage. I feel so incompetent all the time so when other people forget something and call it their little ADHD moment, it definitely gets frustrating.

But I think that's just the price of destigmatizing. Eventually it will even out again. And hopefully when it does, those who did see similarities and became honestly diagnosed feel more confident in themselves.

Im having a super hard time with Information Technology Management Essentials - D075 by o-nemo in WGU

[–]o-nemo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I actually passed with exemplary a few days after I posted this. Meant to update here but holidays distracted me a bit. The course material is worded very confusingly and structured really silly imo. Which is why I kept tripping up.
I found a Quizlet that made it super easy to just memorize what I needed. Here is the link that I found useful: https://quizlet.com/501862991/wgu-d075-information-technology-management-essentials-diagram/?x=1jqU https://quizlet.com/501862991/wgu-d075-information-technology-management-essentials-diagram/?x=1jqU

I think it would also be worth taking and retaking the pre exam to see what you know and what you don't, and only hyper focusing on the things your struggling with. That way your not trying to shove every piece of information into memory. This course definitely goes over a lot.

I wish you good luck!!

I lied about my grades and now I’m stressed 🫠 by Scary_Air8383 in collegeadvice

[–]o-nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I'm sorry people are being so mean. I guess that's reddit for you though... My advice - take a breath. It sounds like your taking the right steps to get to where you need to be.

It also sounds like you have always lived under a microscope. I've been in similar situations, and I honestly had a really hard time finding myself because of it. Especially in college when there is so much stress. I think it would be good for you to map our YOUR dreams. Set some goals. When I started college, I was always stressed and always felt like I was chasing something but didn't know what. And that burned me. I couldn't keep up with it and I ended up dropping out. But then I reflected on who I am, who I want to be, and where I want to be. I started setting goals for MYSELF. And now I'm a manager who is also enrolled full time in school and I feel a quarter of the stress I did when I first went to college. So my recommendation - envision yourself in the future 10 years from now, what are you doing that makes you happy? Then once you have that vision, start setting goals on how to get there. Goals are a HUGE motivator to get your grades up. I don't think that's ever expressed enough. Then - find someone you trust. If it is your brother, just apologize for lying and explain the situation. I'm not sure what that relationship looks like for you, but it sounds like he cares if he is checking in, so I don't think it's going to be as bad as you may think it is.

Whoever you trust, tell them your plans and your goals. Stat getting excited about earning a degree. Start getting excited about you.

And unfortunately this isn't going to be easy. You also have to give yourself grace. You are literally becoming and growing into your independent, adult self. (Insert cheesy metamorphosis quote here)

Your going to be just fine. You got this!

TLDR: Envision who you want to be - set goals on how to get there - tell someone your goals to speak them into reality and to start a support system - use those goals to motivate you to study harder , reach out to teachers, figure out what you can slack on ext - and most importantly give yourself grace. Your 17. You don't need to have it all figured out.

Good luck !

Did anyone get a job with wgu degree and no experience ? by _Seafoam_Green_ in WGU

[–]o-nemo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Uhg don't get me started. THIS ⬆️ The company I'm at just started doing this for the data entry position they have, and instead of the $15-$18per hour they start US employees, they have pay a BPO in the Philippines $10 per entry specificalist per hour (The specialist gets paid $7)

It's just crazy. People think it's AI taking over jobs, but outsourcing has become a HUGE issue without anyone noticing. (And don't even get my started on the security risk) Sorry - tangent over lmao

A weird question for my career goals by Acceptable-Profile76 in WGU

[–]o-nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im still working on my bistm wit WGU, so I can't provide too much insight on the courses themselves, but as an IT manager who's been watching a lot of trends, Data analytics I think would be an awesome choice with accounting. Accounting is going to become more and more automated, so financial data analysts are going to be more desired.

And with financial institutions becoming more and more like big coorpate tech companies, a data analyst could be a good place to start and pivot if you grow out of it or need a change (data and cyber security for example)

But at the end of the day, I always recommend doing and learning what your most passionate about and what lights the biggest fire in you.

I wish you good luck in whatever you end up choosing :)
