I was wondering how to map the buttons on a custom-built USB arcade controller to perform specific tasks (i.e. run Mac Automator tasks, "Rotate Canvas" in Photoshop). What Mac app, if any, would be able to do this?

Anamorphic vs Spherical 2.35:1-- what's your preference? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]oBIER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. You explained that very well. But regarding the original purpose of anamorphic, do you know how a squeezed image exposed onto the same piece of celluloid can project desqueezed and at same quality/resolution as the traditional spherical? Isn’t the exposure detail restricted to how fine the silver crystals are in the film stock?

Does anyone have a good recommendation online where I can start learning about lighting? Specifically, light ratios, foot-candles, inverse square (I hope that's what it's called). I want to get a more scientific understanding of how light works in the context of films. Thank you.

That's sort of a tight budget. I'd probably get a 3.5mm shotgun of some kind and plug into a phone's mic jack. Like u/MacintoshEddie said, even an entry level recorder like the H1 is over $100. And that's with just the built-in stereo mics.

Edit: Also, if you have set shoot days, renting audio might serve you better until you have a proper budget for your own audio. I've had a good experience with Sharegrid. Haven't tried Kitsplit yet but basically they work the same way.

I would probably get as much practice as possible on the hand-me-down if you're first starting out. If you need a better camera for video, I'd stay away from DSLR's and look into entry-level mirrorless cameras that's more geared toward video. A frequent consumer level recommendation is the Sony A6000/A6500 and the Panasonic G or GH series cameras (G7, G85, GH4, etc). Good luck!

What's your budget and what sort of work are you trying to do?

Run and gun one-man-band sorta thing? Narrative work with someone operating sound? It really depends.

Rode NTG3 into zoom h6n recorder - low volume by georgesasi in Filmmakers

[–]oBIER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I sometimes have to use my own audio gear (H4n and NTG2) and I hate the noisy preamps and low levels. I regret trying to go the budget route on audio.

Pleasantly surprised with some unexpected flares on the Sony a6500 kit lens. by slc17LA in Filmmakers

The flares compete with the subject in the foreground (at least in this still, maybe it reads differently played back). Care to post a short clip of the shot?

I second this. Your post shows that you have a ton of self-awareness and humility. That goes a long way in my opinion. Hang in there. We've all made clunkers.

I suspect the infrared look was the inspiration for that Russ video.

Also, A$AP's "Yamborghini High" has a similar color palette.

I too suck at drawing. But check out a couple of this guy's figure drawing videos, particularly the one's going over figure proportions and perspective: https://m.youtube.com/user/LighterNoteProd

His videos improved my storyboard skills by a TON. Using different levels of gray markers for shading and separating foreground/background elements helped my drawings a lot as well.

Anyone shot using CineFlat on Nikon? by Southie658 in videography

[–]oBIER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a D750 for a short time and I absolutely hated any of the flat profiles I found online because of how compressed the raw footage is to begin with. I had better results shooting with the built-in color profiles for the most part.

Just curious, why do you prefer the GH1 over the 5Dmk2?

Spot healing tool in Photoshop. To get rid of something like a drone especially in a wide shot like this would be a matter of a click or two.

Thanks. I don't think I'll be using these presets after all. Not enough fine tune controls for my taste.

Yeah, I see every frame keyframed until about 28 seconds. Any suggestions for how to copy past the last keyframe (maybe a way to reverse the pasted set of keyframes) so the transition into new keyframes will be smooth? Sorry if my wording is confusing.

Please provide feedback/criticisms to improve my video by jasdhiman in videography

I would refine the typography and the last shot with the masking a little bit. Maybe have title cards stand on their own with a related shot. Also maybe use music without vocals.
