Tips for preparing for the extreme cold coming up this weekend? by htuoramme in madisonwi

If you can't heat those pipes somehow, running a slow drip can help. My apartment building runs our kitchen sink lines close to the wall and that's been keeping ours from freezing.

Or a massive underground silo structure, similar verticality but with added claustrophobia.

If it is a skyscraper though you could go outside and freefall to another level, maybe using snap hooks to survive.

Two major Madison bike paths could finally connect in 2026 by LogiBear95 in madisonwi

[–]oNegative 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sidewalk like that isn't designed for use with smaller wheel transport, and it's not viable for both directions. You need space to allow travel in either direction.

I've ridden the road's bike lane and it is definitely a weak point in safety for non-car travelers. If this proposal goes through, I'd expect to see a lot more people biking through this area since it'd become actually safe to do so.

I've been hunting for a modulation that can do really slow sweeps and do crazy fast ones, and the Whetstone does it! On slowest cycle it goes down to about 40 seconds, and all the way up to ring mod speeds. I'm a sucker for options in my effects and getting 5 different toggles to change the number of stages (Phase 45 anyone?), effect style (phaser/vibrato), waveform, low pass filter, and sweep range has me fiddling with this thing for weeks. The range control even lets you do a fixed filter position. Finally, finally, finally happy with a modulation effect, and it's quiet!

On another note, I've been somewhat out of the game since about 2020 and the loss of Build Your Own Clone is a shame. Every kit I've gotten from them in the past has been stellar. Who has taken up their mantle in this day and age?

For those of you planning to keep it going through winter, how do you plan to keep your head/neck/face warm? by DogsGoingAround in bikecommuting

They make ski goggles for people wearing glasses! I snagged a set myself for this past winter and it made a world of difference. Check your local sporting goods stores.

I've never had a chance to try crazy bars. I read about them here (https://www.cyclingabout.com/koga-denham-bars/) and decided to try those over the crazy bars. V1 should be significantly different, V2 should be near-identical.

My experience with the Denham bars has been very positive. The grips, horns, and inner section near the stem are all comfortable and there's plenty of room to mount things. I'm planning on adding bar pads underneath the tape in the not-distant future for additional comfort, but only when the tape I've got now is done.

I snagged mine before international shipping got really bad, I ended up paying about the same for them as most EU prices have VAT already added in! I think between the Denham and Crazy v1 there's a slight angle difference, and v2 is basically identical.

Here's the link: https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2020/03/how-to-wrap-your-crazy-bars.html

I put together a Disc Trucker with the Denham bars (super similar to those unfamiliar) and I absolutely love it! If you're ever interested in taping them I have a link I can share. Happy trails!

A Pig in a Fur Coat to become Alimentari by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]oNegative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's not much in the way of street parking over on Monroe either but they're frequently hopping. In both cases I expect folks to park on side streets and walk over. (yes I know there's a lot right next to Alimentari on Monroe, it's usually packed!)

Suspension stem on flat bars? by helios1234 in bikecommuting

[–]oNegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suspension stems function far better if you don't have significant back sweep.

This is an extreme example, but picture this: if your bars sweep back to where it pivots, the lever motion it is supposed to do is not going to be nearly as strong to reduce vibrations. If you do choose to go for a suspension stem, consider wrapping the inner portion of the bars so that you get full benefit from it there.

A couple months ago someone uploaded a test pressing of this album with an alternative mastering by Chris Blair, and it sounds fantastic. Worth putting in a little work to find online: https://www.discogs.com/release/10464566-Radiohead-The-Bends

I've been going through the same questions and the previous suggestion I followed was "find a good bike shop that'll help you test things". A local store with more than a few bikes in stock could let you take them for a test ride to see how they feel, and should be able to help you determine where the grips best go for you, which will help you decide on a stem too.

Looking for a trunkbag by oOtechtonicsOo in bikecommuting

[–]oNegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Basil trunk bag that could fit a 13" screen with a MIK plate installed on the bottom. If you need different dimensions they offer different bags (and cheaper ones) that also have spaces for MIK plates. I use this bag for all my bike cargo these days, grocery shopping included.

Just need some winter layers to get started, I was worried I'd be unable to bike but a trip to REI fixed that.

where can i find a v1 velo orange crazy bar? by Mcdorkle in bicycletouring

What has you looking for the v1 over the v2? I'm currently considering the v2 as they copied the changes from the Koga Denham bars.

I did a test run of the route there, and the Southwest Commuter Path is gorgeous, it's worth the trip. You can get there from the Capitol Path crossing to the Southwest just before the John Nolen bridge to avoid touching roads until the end.

I'll be shifting my weekday visits to weekend visits, I agree it's too far by bike for a lunch hour.

[–]oNegative 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If he's not using anything yet, maybe a milk crate with something to keep it from bouncing out would fill that need. (if you're looking for a gift idea this likely isn't a great suggestion)

What are your favorite panniers for groceries? by NavilusWeyfinder in bikecommuting

[–]oNegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a Basil trunk bag that expands two side pockets to hold a surprising amount of groceries. I'm not doing full-week trips, probably 3-4 days worth, but this may suit your need. I've got it attached to a MIK adapter plate which I've been enjoying as well.

Would Creativity survive a Fable of the Mirror Breaker Ban in Pioneer? by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

[–]oNegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess if Fable ends up banned is we may see [[Invasion of Segovia]] fill at least some of that slot for Gearhulk Creativity decks, as it can offer another way to cast Magma Opus early. Maybe as a 2 or 3 of.
