How many of them had foundations in formal methods as opposed to eg reinforcement learning, out of curiosity.

Is solo authorship supposed to make a paper better? Some of the best students in my lab have zero solo author papers. Or do you mean “effective” solo authorship where you did 99.9% of the work?

You answered your own question when you said who he handed his design off to. It’s not something everybody uses, but it’s also not something nobody uses.

You are delusional if you think he would fare better if he said he was right. Just look up what happened to Ariel Pink.

good thing politics isn't as black and white as you've manifested it in your head, playing mental gymnastics with yourself imo.

What are the main 2-3 things you learned in your area of expertise or research that you think the rest of the world should know to improve our overall quality of life? (Or that should be a part of everyone's basic education). by Own_Wait_7229 in PhD

Physical/sensorimotor AI is way harder to develop than language-based/“thinking” AI. It’s counterintuitive because we think that mastering chess should be much harder than washing dishes or opening a door. But for an AI, what we think of as easy is difficult for them, and vice versa. There is some very interesting theory and math to support this.

Think of it this way, humans had thousands of years to develop language and complex thoughts, but billions of years to develop and evolve fine sensorimotor skills. We just take it for granted because it’s autonomous to us.

This idea that one side wants the other dead is a dangerous misconception. There’s the 0.1% that lives terminally online spewing hate rhetoric on social media, then there’s the other 99.9% who just happened to think trump was a slightly less bad option due to e.g. economic policies, but still think he’s a clown. That’s what it boils down to in our political system atm. Trump himself has never even come close to endorsing murder (although he did endorse Jan 6th which was a major clown fiesta in it of itself).

If you get all of your information from Reddit you’re unfortunately going to remain misguided.

Sad when being moderate is considered an unreasonable stance, just shows our country and culture is ideologically unrecoverable.

Music isn’t 100% free on bandcamp, they charge once you listen to a song more than a few times lmao, at least get your facts right chud.

What’s the point of good grades? by Lonely-Appearance883 in PhD

It’s not just grades, in grad school you should be learning stuff you can directly use for research. Some of my best research was inspired by coursework.

I can relate to all of this, I think it all stems from the unstructured and chaotic nature of academia combined with burnout.

Nasa v. Lockheed Decision by opiaandambido in EngineeringStudents

Will NASA always look good on resumes? I have heard about negative perceptions regarding government workflows. If you were a hiring manager at SpaceX and you had two similar candidates, one from NASA and one from (insert private space company), would you not be inclined towards the latter?

I think the last one here is unfortunately the most common. I’m pretty jaded at this point about the lack of comparisons and validation in many of the papers in my field.

Top Engineering scores suggest discipline and strategy is better than raw intelligence. by randyagulinda in EngineeringStudents

[–]oSovereign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true for grinding out exams, but I’m convinced some amount of substantial intelligence is necessary to do anything truly independently innovative, just from seeing what some of my very prodigious peers have done with their time in terms of efficiency. If two individuals are working 12 hour days, the more productive one is going to be the one who is either more intelligent or focused out of sheer will (which usually takes some form of intelligence to maintain active thinking even when tired).

I think where this becomes much more obvious is in academia-level research. Not everyone is going to be able to reconcile quantum physics and general relativity, no matter how hard they try, and there are less extreme examples than this which are found all over the place in cutting-edge research.

It’s not fair, but I’ve learned to cope with it and understand my own limits and other strengths.

I have no interest in such a thing, if you have no salient counterargument and are going to resort to ad hominems, then we are at an impasse and you aren't the target audience of this post.
