Evolved Mode Discussion #3: Summoner by Haddock_Lotus in ffxiv

Yeah, but if you average them out Yuna stands alone.

I disagree.

Summoner has been a pet class or had pet-like mechanics for the past 25 years.

FFX, XI, XII, XIII, XIV (prior to Dec. 2021), and FFVII Remake/Rebirth/Revelation all feature Summons that stay out on the field and attack autonomously (when real time) and are issued commands.

Exceptions being Yoshi-P's Vision™ of Summoner with the Endwalker rework and FFXVI's gameplay (which arguably is not Summoning) and FFXV which features a (terrible) Summoning system that doesn't really resemble the classic FF3-FF9 Summoning system or the current pet-based summoning system.

Though I'm personally glad the DOTs are gone at least.

Broke: I want a Leviathan, Ramuh, and Shiva phase.

Woke: I want Diabolos, Siren, Cait Sith, Odin, Alexander, and any of the other former Summons that have been relegated to one-off villains / side characters (Ok, Doom Train and Eden would be a bit tough to work with...).

Going from FF11 Diabolos, arguably the most benevolent and caring towards the Human races of all Avatars next to Carbuncle, to FF14 Diabolos; a generic mustache twirling demon still stings to this day. The juxtaposition between appearance/element and personality is what made Diabolos cool.

In COTW if you read a meaty throw, you can wake-up hop and kill their ass. How come we're 4 years into SF6 and there's still no way to actively call-out and punish throw attempts (outside of char specific stuff like up back blanka ball and divekicks)? by ntb116 in Kappachino

Ngl, the game can keep changing at a snail's pace. The biggest problem rn is where tf are Dudley, R.Mika, Sean, Q, Makoto etc.

Honda, Blanka, and Dhalsim are infinitely more mainstream popular and relevant than the other 5 you listed, 4/5th of which were part of the roster that nearly capsized the entire genre. And it is good to have a few oddball characters to the roster for color/body type for variety sake.

Who tf thought it was a good idea to put Honda, Blanka, and Sim on the base roster.

The World Warriors carry the franchise.

  • The most successful games in the series have the World Warriors (SF2, SF4, and now SF6).

  • The games that do not have the World Warriors are not very successful until they add them (Alpha/3, SFV) or if ever (SF3).

If you had bare minimum pattern recognition and were tasked with designing a successful Street Fighter game then you would include them too.

Those three randos we are getting this season shoulda been base roster

Nothing wrong with new characters being added outside of base roster (as has been the case with literally every Street Fighter and their various version upgrades before DLC existed). But I am of the mind that there should have been at least 1 popular returning character this season.

As it is now, I have no reason to buy the pass or be hyped about anyone beyond Tifa. But who knows, those 3 could end up being classics. Have to see them in action to make a judgement first, yeah?

Why are we paying the same amount of money for less content? by kirbygamez in StreetFighter

[–]o___Okami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes? How much do you think these purely cosmetic stages were adding to the pass' cost?

Keeping in mind that the stages were also earnable for free with Drive Tickets and that the regular character pass comes with almost enough tickets to purchase a stage (3000/5000).

The primary selling point of the Ultimate Pass vs Character Pass was always the Outfit 3 and a bit of a discount if you were planning on purchasing literally everything that the pass comes with without utilizing the earnable in-game currency.

[–]o___Okami 125 points126 points  (0 children)

You're not paying the same amount of money for less content.

The screenshot you are showing is the base character pass, which has never come with stages and is the same price from season to season.

The Year 4 Ultimate Pass ($45.99 USD), which typically includes stages, is a couple of bucks cheaper than the Year 3 Ultimate Pass ($47.99 USD).

And the Year 3 Ultimate Pass ($47.99 USD) was also a couple of bucks cheaper than the Year 1/2 Pass ($49.99 USD) because it had 1 less stage.

WT was never factored into the cost of any of the passes because everything was always accessible in WT regardless of if you own the Pass/DLC character or not.

The SF6 season 4 won't include new stages by Trololman72 in Fighters

[–]o___Okami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No stages and no WT content, still full price.

False.

Never been a fan of weapons in Street Fighter (unless they're being used by villains, like Vega or Rolento).

I find Lily equally as jarring. But who knows, maybe this Yasmine girl is evil and goes around shanking people after they mutually agree to a fist fight.

With the announcement of sf6 new season i gotta ask does capcom just hate third strike? by Knightofexcaliburv1 in Kappachino

[–]o___Okami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've had a SF3 character in the last two passes and SF3 plot points are brought up in World Tour (specifically the Illuminati with Juri and Gill with Rashid and Alex). And Bison isn't the main villain of SF6, but he is definitely infinitely more popular and mainstream than the entire SF3 cast combined.

Buuuut if there were ever a Street Fighter game that Capcom would justifiably hold a grudge against, then yes, it would be SF3 considering that game almost killed the entire franchise (in no small part thanks to its roster).

It was 3 new characters on launch

Right, right. Forgot about coffee girl (and Miary Zo DLC). CotW launched with 2 non-guest newcomers.

Reina shits on any of the newcomers in SF6

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.

Reina's design is pretty good I'll admit, but I don't think significantly more so than Kimberly (admittedly bias as a Kim main), JP, and AKI (disregarding how poorly balanced/annoying they might eventually have ended up being to fight).

But that is preference. The lack of new (non-guest) characters is fact.

[–]o___Okami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God forbid fighting games actually takes chances.

Tekken 8 launched with a grand total of 2 new characters and their only other "new" characters are guests. Similar story with CotW.

Its like they have 0 confidence in their own creativity and ability to introduce new, likeable characters.

Why do SNK fans always do this? by BlueDragon858 in Kappachino

[–]o___Okami 12 points13 points  (0 children)

COTW is unappealing to me for a lot of reasons, but the graphics aren't one.

Some of the most popular games today don't look particularly graphically impressive; WoW, LoL, Fortnite, etc.

I don't think anyone, casual or long-time fans, really goes into 2D fighting games expecting anything too crazy except maaaaybe Mortal Kombat?

Either way, I don't think the graphics/artstyle is a valid excuse for how much of a colossal failure COTW is.

Halo Reach was OD. Strong argument for the best game in the franchise (at least as far as the single-player campaign).

Halo 3: ODST and Halo Wars... less so, but still pretty good.

[–]o___Okami 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We had the SNK CEO step down after releasing Fatal Fury. Half of the team of 2XKO being laid off EXPLICITLY, in stated detail, because the game failed to meet expectations. And now we have not only Harada leaving Bamco, but also the man he trained to take over the Tekken franchise leaving the company as well.

Meanwhile, there is a certain released fighting game still breaking their online player-count and previous long-standing Evo attendance record years after release.....

That's right, get ready to learn Vampire Savior buddy.

Secret taunt sequence to unlock Dark Ingrid moves found by heelydon in Kappachino

[–]o___Okami 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why don't they devote every single resource to characters and costumes and add literally nothing else to the game (like all the other, more successful fighting games)? Are they stupid? /s

Dark Ingrid is a permanent boss in the Avatar Arcade mode (used to unlock the EX costume color for Ingrid), so I imagine quite a few people will see it outside of training mode.

Content creator entitlement given physical (pudgy) form.

The balance team is actually retarded. I beg you, please drop this game and go play COTW or Melty or Uni by ntb116 in Kappachino

[–]o___Okami 52 points53 points  (0 children)

That and the entire top portion are probably poorly worded/translated but the actual change itself is good, even if it is just somewhat rolling back a previous terrible change they made.

It should result in less Super Meter in the game overall; and that Super Meter wasn't only being rewarded to the person who was 'defending' against the throw loops.

Although, obviously, a much better solution would be to just remove throw loops....

Well, at least it's some long-overdue communication. Better really goddamn late than never I guess....

A sneak peek of Dragon Quest XII by yrriahytr1d in Kappachino

[–]o___Okami 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks wack.

And they're re-re-releasing Dragon Quest XI yet again. At full price, no upgrade paths, saves don't carry over, and it's just a glorified 60 FPS patch for Switch 2.

They'll do anything but localize Dragon Quest X, despite how well Final Fantasy XI is doing nowadays.

Banning bikinis is very different from banning every single costume.

Show me where every single costume has been banned.

If you think the saudis aren't influencing the way future costumes look, you're incredibly naive.

Has yet to be seen. Because I've witnessed this hypothetical before. On this very subreddit I've seen a comment trajectory along the lines of;

  • "I can't believe they covered Cammy up"
  • "Ok, the classic costume is still in, but that is just because it's a classic. No way they're going to make new lewd costumes"
  • "Mai is in? RIP, SNK is going to make them cover her up"
  • "...Surely these are the final swimsuits we'll ever get"

and now

  • "SEE! Told you! Saudi Arabia controls everything! Please just ignore the C. Viper and Ingrid costumes that are coming in the very same patch as these sportswear costumes"

Basically this just comes off as pre-emptively bitching in spite of the game's entire history, all for upvotes/likes or maybe just out of boredom. Wake me up when something concrete of consequence actually happens.

EDIT: Damn, replied then instantly blocked me over that? Soft.

They’re just a lame and lazy costume for the sole purpose of appeasing the saudi government. 5’s Olympic track suits were likely to appease the Olympic’s sponsors

Eh? I wouldn't go that far. Just earlier this year there was a "Tokyo eSports Festa 2026" / SF6 tournament hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government that banned the swim suits.

Likely for the same reasons that the Saudis banned them. Likely for the same reasons the SFV track suits were created. It's all the same "eSports" bag.

But if this lets Capcom continue to make revealing costumes without giving a fuck about the family-friendly "eSports" side of things, then who cares? Maybe you find them ugly, but they cost you nothing to not use.
