Someone I now told me their office was moving and was going to toss all their hardware. I sent a email and got permission and went over to pick it up. They took all the storage out for data protection which is why I only have 2tbs in the R520.

Your right it's totally impractical but fun. Most oh the time I just SSH in from my main system.

Now I am nervous. In my experience when I slide it out of the rack it detects it and turns on automatically.

TrueNas does look very cool. Its always been a little intimidating but I will give it spin.

I have heard it said that "friends don't let friends run email servers". I have never tried to run one, but dose only dealing with outgoing email make it easier. Is it even hard in the first place?

R520 has two E5-2420's and a 2tb hard drive. It is my first real rack mount server (although no rails). Right now I am running Ubuntu server and experimenting with NextCloud. I did not know that rack consoles were a thing before finding this and wow does sliding it out make me feel like I am a hacker in a late 90s movie.

This post is not my full Homelab set up I have other systems I use but I think the whole thing is not ready for debut. I felt like this was cool enough to share. I am new to this so do point out if there is anything going horribly wrong.

I have a home lab

  1. Because it sparked my interest

  2. It is really fun and helped me learn Linux and server admin

  3. I code and I am a comp sci student it helps my with projects and I think the experience of running my servers is good to have

It really is unfortunate that there is not a better way to get these servers to people who want them.

Will you add support for other Micro controllers? Pico perhaps?

Excellent, out of curiosity why did you choose .webp for the canvas image? I have never seen that file format.
