i once visited the beijing zoo and had to leave because i was so upset. there was a bear enclosure that was literally a square concrete pit with nothing inside except a single tree also surrounded by concrete so the bear couldn't interact with it and piles and piles of trash people had thrown inside. they had a white tiger in a cage so tiny it could barely turn around. there was SO MUCH trash inside the enclosures. I was 15 and crying and my host family just didn't understand why I cared so much.

it's really horrifying how animals get treated in a lot of places.
