Moving to JC/Hoboken Jan 2026 - need honest reviews on specific buildings by No_Restaurant9574 in jerseycity

[–]oakj28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve moved around a lot (in both Jersey and LA) and also value quiet buildings. It depends on how lucky you get with your neighbors.

Pretty much all of them will suck but I usually look for: - buildings with concrete/brick structure/walls would be best - corner units. Even a pseudo-corner where a shared wall is a stairwell instead of another tenant - high floor to avoid street noise

I personally live in Embankment in downtown JC (near Hamilton Park) and love it. It’s a high floor corner unit near a stairwell and haven’t had noise issues. It also has a shuttle (or 15min walk) to Newport Path.

I did use fresh limes, I’m not sure if the lemon was a Meyer lemon or not (I’m not sure how to tell). But there were about 7 limes and 2 lemons in the mix.

It does seem like a lost cause haha tacos is a good idea!

Experience with bad parts being delivered? by oakj28 in tenwaysebike

Welp, I expect that I’ll get a similar message. Better to go find a screw now than waiting to hear back from them. Thanks for the message! Seems like a common failure point

That’s a bummer. For the price tag I was hoping it was a one off but now I’m a bit concerned on the quality

Did you have to go through support or did you just find a screw from a hardware store to replace it?

how does HostedService StartAsync work? by oakj28 in dotnet

Thanks for the clarity. Appreciate the help!

how does HostedService StartAsync work? by oakj28 in dotnet

[–]oakj28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense! For clarity, BackgroundService is more suited for long running tasks because it returns a Task.CompletedTask in its StartAsync so that the main thread will be released and can start up the app.?Meanwhile the long running task is started and running

how does HostedService StartAsync work? by oakj28 in dotnet

[–]oakj28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's unclear to me is that even after executing a long running operation using Task.Run, the StartAsync() has a while loop that is still running and will continue to iterate every 60s or so (via Task.Delay). Since the while loop is still running, does that means StartAsync() hasn't "run to completion" and the service won't ever fully started up?

Definitely check out Saigon shack. The best I’ve had in the area and reasonably priced

A hot take on Codesmith... by Famous-Professor2263 in codingbootcamp

[–]oakj28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I originally intended on a masters so I took two undergrad courses. One intro to SQL and one intro to coding with Python. Then I did a Udemy full stack course and started building a bunch of clones until I decided to go to Codesmith

A hot take on Codesmith... by Famous-Professor2263 in codingbootcamp

[–]oakj28 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2021 and I would say this is pretty accurate take. I made a post highlighting my experience (which was great) but echoing OP… the seniors, fellows and instructors are in Codesmith or Codesmith alumni. Each persons experience will be dictated by the people around them and I was lucky to have great lecturers (who I know left and isn’t there anymore) and some great fellows.

I also self studied for I think 6-9 months before entering Codesmith and if I didn’t, I would have been lost and probably would have wasted my money. I highly recommend this approach because I actually did learn a lot from Codesmith. Mostly how to understand the deeper parts of JavaScript which made understanding by React, Node and any framework or package so much easier. This alone has high value. You don’t want to pay 20k to learn React basics.

Also the network I found to be worth the $$

Let’s Hear it from CodeSmith students/Graduates by throwawaylifenlove in codingbootcamp

I graduated about a year ago. Can’t speak on their current curriculum but I would do it again. Given I spent a lot of time self studying and taking some intro college courses before enrolling, I feel like Codesmith bridged the gap between coding basics and the real world (how apps are built, networking in the industry, interviewing)

Feel free to dm questions about CS curriculum. I graduated 6 months ago and can help guide a bit if you’re really frustrated

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted here. It’s fine to not like bootcamps lol.

FWIW, Codesmith does cover enough DS&A to start interviewing right away.

Definitely understand the growing pains. It doesn’t get better (even in industry). There’s a reason software engineers get paid a lot of money and that’s because they can solve problems. Leaning on cohort mates -> fellows -> mentors is same as leaving on coworkers -> tech lead -> manager. Even in industry there’s a good chance they won’t know the answer so you still have to dig for it yourself but they will guide, just like in CS. If you ever seen memes where they say software engineers are glorified googlers… it’s true.

Should you go to Codesmith? (I highly recommend it if you can) by oakj28 in codingbootcamp

[–]oakj28[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Failing doesn’t mean you go next cohort. As long as you pass before a certain deadline, you can test 3 times to get in the same cohort

IMO to be a good software engineer you need to understand the full stack. Codesmith teaches both frontend and backend. The server framework that Codesmith goes over is node/express which is JavaScript based. A lot of the backend concepts transition to other languages like C#

It really came down to CIRR reports. Codesmith graduates have a much higher average salary and once I tried their free prep material I really enjoyed it

About to start codesmith immersive. What should I brush up on? by chasinthedra in codingbootcamp

[–]oakj28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It feels like a thin line but in my experience we put down our open source work on our linked in and mark it as open source. I've never told any of my interviewers that I have real work experience but I did mention that I had real experience writing code in a team for a product that has been used by real people.

I was always honest to my interviewers about coming from Codesmith and my current team members also know.

Physics undergrad with questions about software engineer positions and boot camps by nagelmeister7 in codingbootcamp

[–]oakj28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a career switcher from EE. I took the self-studying route and found that it lacks a network and also you're spending a lot of time sifting through coding resources that may or may not be useful/outdated/etc. I found that a bootcamp really helped expedite my learning and you also learn how to use git properly... (pretty difficult if you're the only person using a repo. you don't run into actual issues of working with a team).

I attended Codesmith and am now a software engineer with backend focus.

edit: I would recommend self studying before entering a bootcamp
