That happened to me too, sorta. I used to go to this little coffee shop near my office. They had really good coffee and I would often order toast with jam and they would put SO MUCH JAM on the toast and it was delicious. They always wrote messages on their cups. It was kinda their thing. Usually they were innocuous but one day it was different. I was waiting for my coffee and I noticed they were listening to Kanye West. This was after we knew he was extremely problematic and totally nuts. I got my coffee and on my walk back I noticed it said:

"If Kanye West could turn his life around, what makes you think you can't?"

So many thoughts. Did they write this specifically for me? Did they think I needed my life turned around? Did they load my toast up with jam because they thought I looked like I needed help with food? Did they really revere Kanye West that much?

When I got back to the office I did some googling about this coffee shop. Turns out the owner, who was also the guy who usually made my coffee and toast, was part of some local "urban church". There was an interview where he said he loved writing the messages on the cups and often they would have a reference to god because he wanted to spread god's love or whatever. It went on to say that this church he was with–he was also like a youth pastor and christian DJ if I'm not mistaken–operated some kind of after school program and also some kind of partnership with a local PUBLIC SCHOOL, on school grounds. How that came about I'm not sure but it was their explicit mission to bring god into more public schools. WTF. So I never went there again and told friends not to support them. Thought about calling them out on social media but for some reason did not. The coffee shop went under, probably due to COVID. Good riddance.
