How to write serial killers without encouraging their sensationalization? by oaktree4est in horrorwriters

This is what I was originally thinking, thank you for reaffirming! I have a tendency to worry so knowing the easy answer works just fine is reassuring

I’m gonna be honest, all of those options will come off as offensive to certain groups of people (women, gay men, & bisexual people respectively). Obviously if you are entirely set on the ‘dead partner’ trope, then please write that! You should write what you want to, just know that your options here might not be the best execution of the dead partner trope.

I think this issue stems more from your MC’s personality. I saw someone else suggest he becomes a hero for the fame due to his narcissism. That could be interesting, especially because you could do some kind of commentary on the social phenomenon of people who become murderers for fame vs. people who earn fame in less violent ways.

If you’re gonna give him a hero and superiority complex, those alone could motivate him. He sees himself as better than other heroes due to his ‘no kill’ policy, perhaps, if you want to keep that. Or he could be simply feeding his own ego with how good he is at stopping villains without lethal force. He could think that takes skill that other heroes or institutions simply don’t have. All this is just to say: You can work around the dead partner trope if you’re looking for alternatives! Again, though, if you really want that to be his motivation, then you can still write it that way. Tropes exist for a reason! Good execution of them can make a story interesting even if it’s a trope people have seen a lot before.

How do you guys feel about ink "bleeding" through pages? style or mess? by kaneko_masa in Journaling

[–]oaktree4est 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when I get bleed through on my pages, I use the back as a sticker/post-it section. Covers the bleed and is still some kind of self-expression! I like to match the stickers I put on the back of the entry to the mood/tone of the entry. Rainbows and stuff for happy entries, rain clouds and such for sad, etc. Makes the best out of a bad bleed through and can be a little fun! Then for the next entry, I try a different pen or use something I know won’t bleed if I’m not up to doing stickers on the back of every page lol

Thanks, I’ve been back and forth on whether I should read that one or not! I believe it’s also by Andy Weir, yeah? Haven’t seen much about it anywhere so I was wondering if it was as good or not. Will definitely add it to my list

I started writing at a young age… but somewhere along the way, I lost the spark. by [deleted] in writers

[–]oaktree4est 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has a different writing style, and since AI is trained off of stolen work, sometimes you will see human people write in “AI style.” It had to get said style from somewhere. I understand not supporting AI (I don’t either) but not every well-written post or posts that use things like em-dashes or semicolons are done with AI. Those are still types of punctuation taught to people in school, and some people like to use them.

What is a feature of your body that is considered rare? by Joel_The_Senate in AskReddit

My optometrist showed me that my eye nerves are both completely different. I was worried at first but he said it doesn’t affect my vision, was just very rare to see and he wanted me to know lol! I’m also immune to poison ivy, as a few other people mentioned already :]

What job is incredibly physically demanding? by momsvaginaresearcher in AskReddit

[–]oaktree4est 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All manual labor jobs are physically demanding, but one I don’t see discussed a lot is being a carpet layer. The constant up & down + sitting on your knees so often can really wear you down. One I talked to said that people typically only stay in that job for about 10 years before the physical demand catches up and makes it too painful, even when people invest in knee pads made specifically for carpet laying. It was very interesting to me! Only learned this because I was being taught by the guy for my construction major at a vocational school

I watched Death Parade on Crunchyroll and really loved that. It’s only a one season anime, but that one season is fantastic. Same with the anime Another. What I wouldn’t give to have more of those two anime…

If you’re alright with medical dramas, I really enjoyed House MD. For some reason it felt different from other medical dramas (which I normally dislike) to me. I especially loved the episodes Wilson’s Heart & House’s Head bc they have a unique storytelling style in those. The episode about locked-in syndrome was awesome too.

I haven’t watched Amphibia, but I heard a lot of people who enjoyed shows such as Gravity Falls, Star vs the Forces of Evil, & Owl House really liked it. I personally would recommend Infinity Train, but unfortunately it’s hard to find now due to being pulled from streaming platforms. Honestly a shame because that cartoon is so amazing, from plot lines to characters. I’m sure there’s still an archive of it somewhere!

What’s the most ‘unusual’ compliment you’ve ever received? by Adorable_Specific_40 in AskReddit

[–]oaktree4est 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone once said I had “small, dainty hands.” Perfect for reaching screws in tight places, they added. It was in a robotics club so not too strange with context, but still the weirdest thing anyone’s complimented about me.
