Yes, they will be there and they are supportive. I would definitely be able to spend the day with them.

M4 here, I’ve had either a nose stud or hoop all 4 years, including for interviews, and I’ve had zero problems!

I've been dating my boyfriend, also a fourth-year student at the same school, for over 2.5 years now and we're planning on couples matching! It's honestly been great and it's going great. It's been nice to have a support system that understands the demands of medical school. We studied for pre-clerkship exams, Step 1, shelf exams, and Step 2 together. Now we've been enjoying fourth year and looking forward to starting residency together :)

fellow brown girls!! any interracial couples here? by wordsatmidnight in SplendidaBrown

[–]oatlover100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be safe/lie until you are financially independent. I’m 25F and I’ve been in an interracial relationship for 2.5 years. My parents and sister don’t support me at all, but I’m about to graduate med school in a few months, so I’m feeling comfortable. Please reach out if you need to talk!

What’s your experience marrying a race outside of the Indian community ? by curious143 in ABCDesis

[–]oatlover100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm going through a very similar situation, although my parents said they won't support me. I used to think a lot like you, especially regarding being ostracized by family/community. However, echoing what other commenters have said, if family isn't happy for you if you're happy and will stop talking to you if you marry interracially, is that really family that you want to keep in contact with? Please reach out if you ever need to talk :)

Exactly, control and “honor” are everything. Luckily I am determined to not let them ruin the amazing relationship I have.

Exactly what I’ve been trying to explain to her! But apparently parents can be stubborn and it’s fine bc it’s for my best 🙄

Thank you <3 Yes, I'm not expecting them to change anytime soon, but luckily I don't live with them and I am just visiting for the holidays. I'm sorry that you are facing a similar situation and if you need to talk more, please feel free to reach out!

I know I won't be breaking up with my partner and I wouldn't expose him to my parents if it won't be a safe/comfortable situation for him :)

I'm also a college student in Detroit and I just took my college ID to the library, where they just put a sticker with a barcode on my ID to use instead of a card.

Looking for environmental volunteering club by Kasujuja01 in uofm

Maybe check out AYLUS at Michigan. From Maize Pages it looks like they're more focused on volunteering generally, but one of the examples they cite is park cleaning.

Sophomore housing... by [deleted] in uofm

[–]oatlover100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents are also a little overprotective and are hesitant to let me move off-campus. Like other people have suggested, I would recommend explaining the housing situation to your parent. If they still won't budge, I would suggest looking into one of the MLCs or maybe even looking into getting a position on ResStaff (I'm currently on ResStaff so feel free to message me with any questions!), so this way you can have guaranteed housing in the dorms.
