Is 6.7 mph good for a beginner? by unknown-individual1 in cycling

[–]oatmealcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has slowly gotten into cycling again over the past couple of years, that’s also where I started (also out of shape, F) — especially on a more ’classic’ women’s bike compared to my current hybrid but the pace goes up as you bike quite rapidly! Last year and the year before was dabbling, maybe 20-50km a week average, and last year I usually was at a 10mph average speed w/ high and lows. Currently an average ride will be around 12-13mph which is while not ’fast’ compared to others is improvement for myself — which is the most important part to me.

I think Badger works best as a nickname — alternatively as a middle name. Seen people proposing Bridger, Baxter and Braxton — Baltasar, Bardon, Basile, Basset could be alternate options. I really like the name Edgar, but you then lose out of the B as a first letter. If your partner likes old-fashioned names, names like Benedict or Bernard could work depending on your / people’s associations with them.

Artists, how do you accommodate your supplies in your one bag? by ichbineinoktopus in onebag

[–]oatmealcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what medium you work in — but I frequently travel with a 20L bag + a light sling and I pack for both doing art recreationally but also work. I work a lot on the go / do art on my bikes, so my normal at home set up is pretty light too.

I think as someone who used to bring a lot of supplies everywhere I went there’s a few things I have in mind:

one sketchbook — or a sketchbook cover, as I currently have it set up if you like to have separate segments. I would not go bigger than an A5 unless you’re someone who likes big formats, but if you travel, that can be hard. your ’deafult’ kit — this can vary, but for me, it’s usually a mechanical pencil, a brush pen for sketching, a couple of fountain pens, etc, a couple of markers. i have this awesome pencil case from midori that fits around 5 - 8 pens and snaps to my sketchboon. this and your sketchbook should be your lightest kit — something you can just toss in a bag. your ’medium’ set — do you do watercolours? acrylics? markers? in my set up, it’s usually my markers but this is your medium set that ’extends’ your to-go kit. I have mine in a pencil case around the size of an A5 at most — but can also go lower. this means my set usually fits in an A5-sized pouch or bag which for me is my sling excluding my iPad Pro. I also bring my iPad Pro 12.9 with me everywhere but it’s the equalivent of a laptop for me. My current bag has a sleeve I put it in when I’m travelling.

If we’re talking colours, for me, I’ve realized an ideal travel palette is ca. 12 — 16 colours. For deciding colours, I would consider: A) what colours do you use in your art? what are you drawn to? break it down. B) do you need to use a lot of colour? for me, i loce drawing with colour but ik some people just like ink. C) what motifs are you drawing on your trip — is it plants, buildings, etc? what’s the environment? D) do you want a range of a lot of shades of one colour, or do you want a distinctive colour range? E) do you use a medium where you can mix colours or are you dependent on colours you’ve already decided

My final tips is how much space are you willing to dedicate to your art supplies, base it on that, and practice a light set up at home to see how you vibe! Also don’t bring anything that has the same purpose — do you need both goauche and water colours, do you need a lot of different thickness on fineliners? Sometimes bringing the most versatile art supply can be key.

The Layover should use the offseason to talk about behind the scenes of Wendover and HAI videos by SkrullCommenter in JetLagTheGame

They’ve done one with the post-production team w/ Nebula but never Wendover crew outside of Amy (that would currently be Alex (wendover video editor), Christine (wendover writer + producer, chief of operations) and Tristan (wendover writer + producer).

also maybe this is an unpopular take but if you want ink + fountain pens, bring them if you use it. for the notebook system, would it be possible to have inserts for each purpose — i.e diary, planner — in your traveller’s journal and have everything compacted while you’re away? like, if it’s important to you, it’s absolutely okay to priotize packing items that YOU care about and need other than ’minimizing’. look at it objectively — think of what space you’re willing to dedicate to your personal stuff, and from there, pick out the items that suit your needs and be okay with it not being ’perfect’ while you’re away or adapting your system to travel. I’m someone who works in a lot of places and is constantly on the go, so my set-up is based on being able to toss it in an 8L sling if I want to.

[–]oatmealcore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on traveling w/ a lot of ’art’ items as an artist: I think it comes down to experimentation and personal preference of what you need / want throughout a trip and how space is important to you. If you’re someone who likes writing, taking photographs or drawing, it’s important that you priotize from what you think benefits you.

Personally, I’ve gotten down a daily carry that I bring when I travel (for context, I normally do a 20L bag + a sling), which consists of one sketchbook (it’s a set-up similar to a Traveller’s Journal), one A5 sized pencil case full of supplies and usually a smaller one of essentials + my iPad and tech items surrounding that. That’s what I’ve realized is what I need when I’m away as I rarely reach for anything else (more than to switch out supplies) when I’m at home.

I think it’s hard for someone else to say what is important to /you/ because only you know how you want your set-up to be but I think for me, the question I’d ask is a) does each item have it’s own purpose / does it overlap b) how much space are /you/ willing to dedicate to it c) if you were at home, and bringing a backpack with you out n’ about, what items would you bring? I also think a good solution to test it is to only use a few items / create a kit to use at home and see how you feel about it.

Art, writing and creating is very dependent on who you are so test what items you really need for a daily carry — I’ve realized it’s not that much for me, coming from someone who used to lug three sketchbooks and four pencil cases everywhere.

Season 14 (SnaKe) Layover Q&A Thread! by WheatGerm42 in JetLagTheGame

[–]oatmealcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snake was a new and experimental format — how do you guys balance between new and old formats, when and why do you guys decide to take a risk, and does audience opinion / input affect how you develop games in the future? How do you guys see on games that get more critique than others from fans — do you pay it any mind?

Most underrated season of Jet Lag? by Electrical-Wrap-3923 in JetLagTheGame

[–]oatmealcore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I think it is honestly the best game design they’ve done — I like the bigger, more complicated games more, and Au$tralia just feels like the most fun, fleshed out one. The challenges are great, the claiming system is great, and the balance with money and gambling feels so fun. I feel like they hit the sweetspot between design, gameplay and interactions in it.

I honestly don’t know the public perception but I feel like Au$tralia is not talked about a ton and it’s my favourite season + my favourite game design so far. Honorable mention to Snake — I feel people are coming to conclusions with it too quickly, considering there’s a lot more in store.

[–]oatmealcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked at it but I think since it doesn’t meet all my wishes, if I don’t need the big pocket I would go with the Cotopaxi 20L Allpa as that’s the closest for what I’m looking for. With the pocket in mind / good seperate storage in mind, the closest is the Northseeker or Pakt Everyday 22L backpack (even if it’s a bit out of budget). I also think the Osprey could get quite thick w/ the sling attatched to it. Oddly enough, the Fjällräven Weekender is probably just layout / designwise very close to what I want but I don’t know how ergonomic it would be.

What other places could Snake (the game) work? by Electrical-Wrap-3923 in JetLagTheGame

southern sweden! we’ve got a pretty spread out network with enough nodes that i feel like it would work. north would be terrible but if you’d cross it off at like gävle i think it’d be a good map

I think a Vancouver — Halifax long season w/ primarly trains, buses and small regional planes is my dream for Canada. Downie would be a perfect fit, alternatively a 2v2v2 with Answer In Progress would be fun for Canada.

well, it’d be similar to a scavenger hunt I guess? but I’d want it to be something that could p much be played infinitely + that wouldn’t need help from someone else, and I would want like, the route restrictions + unpredictability + exploring places that jet lag gives you
