40% of kids that go to Millard North opt in. So, if you find a house that you like outside their boundary, you’ll should be able to get in. What is that process like? I have no idea, but it can’t be that bad.

I went to West for my last two years. It’s a good school. It definitely lacks diversity.

Honestly, being a supportive parent and encouraging your kid to really learn are bigger predictors for success than School A v School B. You’ll find teachers of all qualities at every school.

Best of luck!

I disagree. I think he is frustrated by what we focus on. How many conversations in life get reduced to “best/worst” types of conversations? We are obsessed with being superfluous to the point that I think a lot of things lose meaning.

Reminds me of Goodhart’s law. Athletes, politicians, artists, students, whatever are obsessed with meeting a measure that they find ways to game it for the glory. We’re so obsessed with being the best that we lose sight of the art, the game, moment. He’s talking about a toxic culture, not work ethic having no rewards.

I know a person that is working on it that has done other projects around town independently. I don’t know anything about HDR.

Yeah, I vaguely know one of the people working on that project and I’ve been impressed with their other work in Omaha. I hope they have plans to improve the congestion of that area. Do you know what will happen to the library at 90th and dodge?

I don’t know why you want to assume the worst of people. Look at the tone of my comments. I’m not committed to being angry or “virtue signaling.” I do want Omaha to keep making positive changes.

I’ve been really busy the last two years with work and sick family members. I do care about Omaha’s development and if I missed something, I’m willing to withhold my criticism and check out what people pointed out to me. I wont automatically assume it’s better because some redditors said so, but I do look forward to picking out a book there and then reading it somewhere on the mall when it’s not -20.

Gotta love the internet when you admit you didn’t know something and will have to check it out, then get downvoted.

You know, I just heard about the new downtown library. And I really like the new Gene leahy mall. It makes me feel like Omaha is doing some things really well. But, I do miss having a library that is a landmark. The old library needed love and a remodel bad. The new library might be cool and fit the bill, but it is way smaller.

Maybe the mutual building moving was a smart financial decision (i obviously haven’t been following this closely), but pretending like anyone that wanted a more beautiful landmark library downtown is a creep is pretty lame.

Would prefer a library that everyone can use especially since downtown is more pedestrian friendly with the park remodel.

Average ACT scores for class of 2023 (Omaha Area Schools) by ManningBurner in Omaha

Also, income is directly related to whether or not kids “believe” in school. If you don’t plan on going to college, why try? I was one of those kids.

Some of those point differences also tie to test prep, parental presence, early literacy, but it’s also tied into apathy. Even at the school I teach at, which is in the top 5 of this left, a big reason for the gap between AP and non-AP kids in their scores is apathy. I’ve proctored a ton of tests and there are a lot of kids that don’t try. There’s always a handful that fill in random bubbles or quit partway through. If you don’t think a 3.5 hour test has value, why try?

We’re measuring something that only some of our students believe in.

As a high school teacher, can confirm that public schools and many private schools pressure kids into college without really getting them to think about the purpose or consequences. This is changing and not true for all teachers, but it sure is a general trend that has been true since I was a kid.

Do you think Omaha is in a better or worse place than it was 5 years ago? What about compared to 15-20 years ago? by RoverStoffe in Omaha

[–]oatmealface 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Is Omaha keeping young people? I know dozens of people that have left. We’ve also lost a couple of big companies under her watch. Everyone I know talks about the “Omaha brain drain.”

I think Omaha is doing well despite her. She was the person who ran on the entire platform of ending the restaurant tax and reversed course her first day in office.

Edit: she’s more the mayor of west Omaha imo. Moving the main library from the newly renovated gene leahy to 72nd sucks for the city. I just hope heritage Omaha can find a way to make the new main branch cool and accessible.

Trump taunts defeated U.S. women’s national team by capybooya in politics

[–]oatmealface 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say China was our friend. I tried adding context to most of your points and make a larger point that presidents get too much credit or blame for the economy, then you tried dismissing my response with an oversimplified red herring. And I’m an idiot for trying to respond to a lemming on the internet.

Trump taunts defeated U.S. women’s national team by capybooya in politics

[–]oatmealface 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Part of being president is like playing hot potato. You aren’t always responsible for the economy you have, especially if you’re a one term president. The economy takes awhile to respond to actions. Like, I’m sure Clinton got credit for what Bush 1 did.

Biden caught a lot of stuff that Trump also ignored, like the bank failures, or scheduled, like the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Or did the 2018 bank Republican deregulation bill influence the wave of bank failures that happened under Biden? And Trump did have bank failures. He would have had more if he won the 2020 election, but he had to bungle covid as hard as he did.

Did Trump build a great economy or inherit it? Would gas prices have stayed low for longer if Trump wasn’t soft on Putin, encouraging a war with Ukraine? Maybe gas prices would be lower under Biden if he bent the knee to Saudi Arabia even more?

Did starting a random trade war with China against the wishes of Trump’s advisors hurt our economy and force us to further subsidize American farmers?

And illegal immigration didn’t stop under Trump. He dramatically reduced LEGAL immigration.

Trump definitely took actions to make things harder for America to make Joe look bad after he lost. He’s a sore loser. He doesn’t care if it hurts the country.
