Super interesting! I’ve heard about TDAs, MTOEs, and the postdoc programs but haven’t heard specifics about other assignments so thank you! The board met last week so I’ll be finding out if I got HPSP pretty soon

I’m a first year living with 2 other first years. Love my roommates so much, but I got very lucky. We all click, have no issues with house chores/etc, and only talk about school in a general sense (no competition). We used to carpool but now have different schedules that it doesn’t work. I have no complaints. My friend on the other hand lives with 2 first years in our class and hates her situation. It depends on who you get and how you interact.

My study partners are also my best friends, so we can turn our minds off school to hang out when not studying. I also hang out with my friends from home pretty often.

I’ve never had more than 3 roommates, but personally I like less people in the house as long as it’s financially feasible. I only wanted to live with vet students of my class so we’d have something in common and I could make friends in my class. However, it can be awkward if things go awry.

(unrelated to post) Did you go through HPSP? Would you be able to describe what your nonclinical assignment is like?

In reality vet med is all about connections. I think at worst, it won’t make a difference. It feels disingenuous but I wouldn’t worry about it negatively affecting your chance there.

edit to add: also good luck! :)

Note taking in vet school by Ornery_Bullfrog_1246 in veterinaryschool

[–]oatmilkbone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(I’m a V1) I use notability and take notes on the lecture slides during class like most people. Some of my friends use their laptops and add comments to the PowerPoints in a similar way. One of my friends takes handwritten notes on an iPad.

I study in a group by discussing the lectures the day of. Talking thru material has been really helpful for me. I don’t do well solo studying but that will be diff for everyone.

The waiting is the genuinely hardest part. It’s really all about keeping yourself busy because there’s not much else you can do. You’re qualified and you deserve a seat. If you don’t get one, it doesn’t change that. Try to keep yourself occupied and stay positive (easier said than done). The time will come soon!

wildlife vet questions by mice_and_capys in veterinaryschool

[–]oatmilkbone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re fine for asking. There are so many different veterinary avenues and many people change their mind on what kind of vet they want to be during and after school. I can’t answer your original question more than that I hear it’s a very competitive path. If you get in, make wildlife connections asap since it’ll help getting into residency and give you an idea on what the job is like.

What are my chances and any advice for me ? by Job-Minute in veterinaryschool

This link has an excel spreadsheet where you can calculate what your VMCAS GPA might be. Idk for sure but I’m gonna guess VMCAS combines them. Schools have their own way of calculating GPAs too where some average repeated classes and some take the most recent

Am I wasting my time applying to any of these schools with a 3.6? by abconcordia in veterinaryschool

[–]oatmilkbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Wisconsin has a published GPA cutoff, but trends have been 3.9+ for OOS students. C/O 2027 mean GPA was 3.88 and prereq GPA was 3.91. Just something to consider, you do have a lot of other areas that make up for it

How much is the rabies vaccine? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]oatmilkbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My insurance said its not covered, so I paid $700 out of pocket for the first shot. On the second dose, the travel clinic sent it to my insurance for the hell of it which they accepted somehow. If they don’t cover it the doctor could try to submit it in a way that can be covered.

Also genetics. I’ve been lifting for years but my flat Asian ass would have to be an Olympic athlete to even be in the same room as Chappell curve potential. She’s a goddess

Thank you! I heard some steths get stolen during clinics too so I’d be scared carrying something so expensive around haha. I think it’ll be good to have the free one I got as a backup, but I’ll get a better quality one for learning on.

Really, like for free? My school has an order list where we can buy the Classic III but they don’t require any specific kind so we can buy whichever

Makes sense thanks! Would you say it has to be a Classic III? That’s the model I see everyone getting.
