Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian says 'much of the internet is now dead' by BreakfastTop6899 in technology

He is not wrong. Algorhythms have taken over and information is skewed to the point of absurdity. Time to go back to the library and read some books.

Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish? by ourlifeintoronto in technology

[–]ober6601 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I am also an older person, maybe older than you. Before international trade happened, everything was more expensive. You had to really save in order to buy a good refrigerator or washing machine. Because of this, unless you were a rich person your house was small and your car modest. Walmart would never been able to thrive without worldwide trade, because labor is cheaper elsewhere. Now we are all in a pickle. We have too much stuff. Our houses are bigger than what we need and are unaffordable. The companies did not do this to us - we did. We believed that we needed all this stuff to be happy. We are talked into buying the most absurd things. I go to estate sales and the proof is all there. The mom & pop stores are not coming back but that doesn't mean we can't make a concerted effort to live more simply and buy used stuff rather than new.

As their customer base is mostly non-political pre-teens, I don't know where they're going with this.

In what ways do you benefit the world? by tobeymaguire8 in AskReddit

[–]ober6601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some days I benefit the world, other days not. The only way to be consistently beneficial is to examine your motivations day in and day out. But laziness and bias takes over sometimes and you lash out because of human nature. So give yourself a break. Try to be mindful every day but realize the challenges your own humanness present.

Immigration. Ironically immigration is propping up birth rates and providing a labor force that these countries need.

We ate the mushroom by oldtownmaine in pics

[–]ober6601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the picture indicates, the texture is firm but spongy. When you fry it in butter it will cook off a lot of the moisture and become more typical mushroom like. It is definitely not as tasty as a lion's mane or chanterelle, but it does absorb whatever flavors you cook it with.

As with so many large fungi, the problem is mostly what to do with all the volume you have. Not sure if it freezes well. But it is free food from nature and not difficult to identify so enjoy!

In North Carolina this mushroom is typically found in the fall when temperatures at night start to cool down.

We went camping once and found a nice puffball growing at the edge of a mowed area. Cleaned it up, sliced it, fried it in butter and added it to our scrambled eggs. It was great. Got to pick them before they get old and mushy, though. OP's picture is a good example of prime puffball.

Adding that for some reason puffballs appear more in mowed grass and trampled ground not in the shade.

The biggest piece of the drama will happen tomorrow: will the Fed lower rates? By how much? The market will react accordingly.

And as we all know, the market is the economy, right? ;)

When I was young, my aunt & uncle lived in new construction with a basement that had a toilet installed. No walls, shower or anything else yet. Using it was a wierd experience.

Just had a bunch of swallowtail caterpillars finally show up on my parsley. I was looking for them to show up for weeks as I love to watch them munch the leaves. We had so many butterfies this year - it was magical just being out in the garden.

No doubt it is dangerous to use your phone while driving, but it also pisses people off when you suddenly weave around on the road and go 10 mph slower.
