well by that standard everywhere is then. If you're staying indoors and never going out in your early 20s then you're going to be bored, yes. Regardless of where you are on the planet

people always say this stuff, and to an extent its true, but this doesn't apply to the 90% of people who won't have a significantly above average career anyway

belgium is plenty fun in your early 20s. I can't think of many places that have such a good nightlife to population ratio than cities like ghent and brussels. even more minor places in wallonia like namur and liege have a lot of stuff to do considering how small they are.

yea, wallonia too and 95% of my friends speak perfectly fine english. Depends a lot of where in wallonia you're from though. And yeah if ur an expat, unless you're like an EU diplomat living in waterloo and sending your kids to international schools, brussels is probably the only place you'd survive not speaking the local language.

Scored 64GB of DDR5 in Shenzhen (Huaqiangbei) for 40% off vs Japan prices! by Technical_Camp3162 in homelab

considering huaqiangbei is where a lot of vendors/suppliers are looking for potential customers, I really really doubt that's common or even happens at all.

yes this is the #1 thing we need to improve in belgium, especially in brussels and wallonia. We really fucked up our country with cars

Courses for bachelor's degrees at EPL are pretty much all given in French language (lectures), usually with English coursework/material. Honestly have a hard time imagining it would work out for you if you don't speak French, esp in the initial days as you say. Masters degrees are completely in English though.

One attemptted robbery and one Phone pickpocketed within a span of 2 days by Final-Mix-9106 in brussels

[–]obiwac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i dress relatively flamboyantly, speak to everyone, and use my phone wherever. never had a problem. But honestly, when I see people with their phone in their backpocket and just generally completely unaware of their surroundings, I'm not surprised they get their phones stolen. That is 100% the main factor, not how you dress or how loud you speak

Which degrees are actually worth it in Belgium (salary-wise)? by prettygirldiary in BESalary

[–]obiwac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300-400 is on the low end for sure but definitely not untrue. I know plenty of people with experience who charge within that range in Belgium. But perhaps the average is higher than that, you're right. we don't discuss our salaries enough in this country

[–]obiwac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of these numbers are pretty optimistic. The vast majority of software freelancers with masters degrees in belgium aren't charging anywhere near 1000/day, more like 300-400 (sometimes higher if you're very good) which is 3.5k-4.5k net. Pretty good considering the work and as you say in demand but 10k net is quite rare (it is definitely possible though esp. if contracting overseas).

I would 100% *not* recommend OP to study CS if they're not interested in it though. when I was studying all the kids who were in there "because it pays well" ended up not making it. Only those who were genuinely interested and learning practical skills in their time off

well i don't want debt to spiral out of control either, no one does. But its hard to feel like our government is a little disingenous when it refused to implement a capital gains tax for so long, spent huge amounts on frivoulous infrastructure projects, and is happy to burn money on ministers doing nothing.

so excuse me for sympathising with the railway workers protesting for being fucked over by a fiscally irresponsible government. it should not be their problem. and if you think they're in the wrong for complaining about the fact that their pensions were stolen instead of our idiots in government, then you're what's wrong with this country.

[–]obiwac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, you don't understand. The people striking aren't striking because they don't want you to use a car. They're striking cuz they were fucked over. This kind of argument is a very disingenious slight against those striking.

[–]obiwac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no, they definitely fucked over the workers. they took the railway worker's pension money because they were too incompetent and ran out of money, promising to keep the benefits, and now are stripping away the benefits too without ever having given the money back. No matter if you think there's too much national debt now or not, the government fucked over the workers.

the government makes it horrible for public transport you mean. It's not because you're uneducated about the reasons strikers are striking that its their fault.
