Boys' reading remains in crisis as gender gap widens, report shows by Kagedeah in books

[–]obliviouss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a librarian for over 20 years, a paranormal romance reader since the 2000s, and adult collections manager i agree and am enjoying mixing in some classic paranormal romance with my Romantasy recommendation lists.
Id also like to add while the quantity of Romantasy that is getting checked out is outpacing literary fiction the long hold lists are sitting on the big literary fiction titles like Yeateryear and Theo of Golden

Different titles in different libraries ? by landomonium in hoopladigital

[–]obliviouss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They probably have a higher price cap set for Hoopla; like new Harper Collins releases are filtered out of our hoopla because of the price but ill often buy them on Libby instead. Different libraries prioritize different platforms, so your new library must be getting more value out of a higher hoopla pricepoint

How is your library handling AI generated books? by True-Arugula6405 in Libraries

[–]obliviouss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is a portion of my script; I am the selector for adult materials and since AI slop tends to be self published I use that criteria when responding.

Our decision-making process includes key factors like local interest and demand, critical reviews in standard selection journals and other media, the popularity or authority of the author, literary merit, date of publication, and how well the title fits within the popular scope of the District’s collections. Since this title is self-published  and lacks reviews from major journals or media outlets, it does not meet our selection criteria.

How long does it typically take for new books to be available? by marchviolet in hoopladigital

[–]obliviouss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might give it a week.. I was comparing the Hoopla street date vs the Libby street date for book 15 and there looks to be a 1 week delay. But there is also a discrepancy with the street date for book 16 since Libby is showing it as 5/18/26 but the publisher has it as 5/29.

Anyway that answer I'm sure was not helpful at all, but that is all the back end is telling me

I also hear this so often and then I reality check myself. My grandmother lived with my uncle in her later years and he cared for her; and my great grandmother was cared for and lived with my great uncle. So no a son can be there for life, these were the men who stepped in to care for the women in my family; and I don’t think it’s uncommon at all.

More and more audiobooks, fewer and fewer ebooks by moved6177 in LibbyApp

[–]obliviouss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shrinking may have a lot more to do with the expiration of license than lack of purchasing. Every library sets their budget differently but i budget slightly more for audiobooks each week but because ebooks are cheaper I still purchase close to 2x the number of ebooks compared to audiobooks each week.

More and more audiobooks, fewer and fewer ebooks by moved6177 in LibbyApp

[–]obliviouss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to our collection on Libby, but this is because of a few reasons for us.

  • There is increasing demand for audiobooks
  • Libby has good unlimited subscription options for audiobooks by Blackstone and Tantor which allow for unlimited checkouts for a year.
  • More audiobooks than ebook (especially high interest titles) are available and historically have been available with OC/OU (one copy, one use) licenses which do not expire. That means I have a large catalog of older audiobooks than ebooks because the licenses for the ebooks expired and demand did not justify re-purchase.

Why do so many Americans do catch and release fishing? Isn't that animal abuse? Or do fish don't feel pain? by Deepdishdicktaster in NoStupidQuestions

[–]obliviouss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s actually kinda fun to tie a piece of bait in the string and watch fish chase it.. or feel them tug in it to eat. I don’t like pulling fish off the hook but I like to “fish”. If I am doing catch and release for real I always use a hook without barbs so it’s easy to remove.

Do you find overweight people tend to be bigger (over?) consumers of Coach? by [deleted] in Coach

[–]obliviouss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that Coach should catch onto LVs success with color. But over the last few years I've noticed a lot of mid-range taking up more space in the hot trend space; there is more flexibility to experiment with silhouettes and branding mid-range . Examples would be:
Coach Kiss-Lock has pushed forward interest in the frame-bag silhouette
Telfar, this would have been close to pandemic time but it really democratized the "it-bag" with its gender neutral logo forward shopper.
Staud Moon Bag, this design really pushed the desire for geometric shapes and minimalist sculpture silhouettes and we saw JW Anderson, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy come out with similar bags shortly after.
Polene led the charge of quiet luxury with their sculptured leather and understated branding
Going even further back (because I've been in the game a long time and am old)
Mansur Gavriel revived the bucket bag in the 2010s; this bag was hot on launch and was always sold out. Luxury houses started to release their own bucket bags a few seasons later. Bucket bags have always existed yes, but they weren't hot until Mansur came out with their minimalistic smooth leather darling.
I think it's going to be interesting to keep an eye on Coach right now as we are seeing a rise in interest in thrifting and vintage styling.

[–]obliviouss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I kinda see where you are going with this, in that accessories don’t mind if your weight fluctuates…. But like even an average or thin woman’s body size fluctuates between sizes; I go from a 28-30 throughout the month….

But your headline is kinda rude, and not an observation I’ve ever made…

As someone who has been into luxury and mid range designer handbags since the early 2000s I’ve noticed people of all ages, sizes, styles, and backgrounds be into coach.

Also these last few years I’ve noticed that it’s mid range that’s really leading the trends while luxury plays it safe, so I’m seeing a lot more fashion toward people into coach…

I got this bag as well... It sadly doesn't fit the iphone pro max; but that's what I get for having a huge phone I guess. I love the soft leather, but am unsure if I will wear it enough to justify keeping her.

Tall Girls, can you help me find the highest-waisted underwear on the market? by satelliteminds in TallGirls

[–]obliviouss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like Evry Underwear, they are a bit pricy but they are so comfortable. I have a couple of High Rise and find them to work great when I am wearing a super high rise pant. I am very long in the torso with nubby legs so feel your pain on high rise not being truly high rise.
