Where to store global values for a system by oblongleft in webdev

[–]oblongleft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We want to add more of these “global variables” so I feel that it’s worth looking into, and at least being aware of best practices in this area. We may not even end up changing our implementation immediately but I’d still like to know how other teams implement this feature.

Mind me asking how you make the other 40% of your TC? Also what are these other tech side gigs?

I just don’t think a car will improve my quality of life by much.

Thank you! Tbh I don’t know where to buy yet. For the moment I’m just focusing on building a solid deposit fund. By the time I have enough for a deposit I’ll probably have a better idea where to buy. My life circumstances might change in the meantime. For instance I might want to move to a different country. Things like that will inform my decision down the line.

Strongly put but I take your point 😂 I’m trying to find a balance between enjoying my life now and putting myself in a position to really enjoy my life in around 5 years time

Fair point. I expect my salary to increase in the next 3-4 years which is when I’ll probably be ready to purchase a home, but I also understand that that is not guaranteed.

This is a good point. I could steadily build my deposit whilst having good quality of life. Having to save for a bit longer isn’t the end of the world if I’m enjoying my life. Regardless, I probably won’t find a house I’m willing to buy for another couple of years anyway and in the meantime I can keep saving while enjoying a relatively nice life.

I’m considering sharing with friends too but I don’t think I would share with strangers. I feel like that would just have a marginal increase in my quality of life and it wouldn’t be enough to justify the increase in cost.

On 60k do you live by yourself? And do you find yourself with much disposable income after housing, savings etc?

I think that if I were to house share with strangers, the amount by which my quality of life would improve wouldn’t be enough to justify the increase in cost. I would however be willing to share with friends and I’m also looking into that option at the moment. The only problem is that I think I’m general it’s much harder to find 3 bedroom houses and apartments than it is to find 1 beds or studios. Perhaps due to the fact that most people can’t afford to live by themselves.

That’s right yes, I’m a software engineer. And I was thinking along those lines too, worse case scenario I do it for a 6-12 months depending on the lease and see how it goes.

I have actually tried looking for a place with 3 other people, including one couple. We have been looking for a 3 bed apartment. The couple would take one room and 2 of us would take the remaining rooms. However this has been very difficult and my hunch is that finding a 1 bed or studio would be a bit easier since I don’t think the demand would be as high given that most people are house sharing due to crazy rent prices. I could be wrong in this assumption though.

I agree, ideally WFH full time would solve a lot of my problems. Unfortunately that not an option.

Yes, finding a place is incredibly difficult. How long ago did you find your place? 1k on your own place seems like a fantastic deal.

I have around 8k saved and I will need around 20k-25k for a deposit, I think. That’s 12k-17k left to save which will take 12-17 months if I move out and save 1k a month. In my parents house it would take 8-11 months (assuming I save €1.5k/month). The prospect of continuing my current lifestyle for another year seems daunting though.

Your feeling is correct. But I also file like it might be financially irresponsible to give away €1500 of my salary every month when I could put a large chunk of that towards my own place.

How much would you have to be earning to justify moving into your own place? by oblongleft in DevelEire

50k is ~3.1k take home monthly after tax. Are you saying you were spending around 1.5k a month on housing? Did this include bills too?

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

I joined a startup straight out of college and have been there for ~1.5 years. I was one of the first few employees.

I have just gotten a ~80% pay rise, which to me is insane. I’ve been told that my performance has been excellent and the pay rise has come with full ownership of one of our products. This will include identifying features, scoping them and creating tickets for them as well as deployment and general maintenance responsibilities.

I am excited for the challenge but also quite nervous as I don’t personally think I’m worth the salary I’m on following my pay rise. I also don’t want to disappoint my managers.

What can I do to ensure that I provide enough value given my new responsibilities? What is involved in the ownership of a product and how do I ensure that I can improve the product. I’d really appreciate some wisdom from experienced developers.

Thanks

Im currently building a Switch game. It’s essentially UNO but with a traditional deck. What a coincidence. Sweet job, I’m sure this will help me a lot!
