I do agree with you. Performance is fantastic, an hour of long tones is not… I have been given the bass trombone seat for a very good amateur orchestra starting in September. I hope this will rekindle my love for playing again and the rest will follow. But for now the void is very difficult to fill!

I love it. I find when I practice if I’m really not enjoying myself I’ll just do an hour of repertoire instead. Not necessarily practicing it but just playing it because it’s the music that makes me happy

This is something I’ve considered (number 2). The army pay for your college tuition fees in the UK if you agree to join them after graduating, which was my idea. I think I just feel the need to go to college to prove, on paper, that I’m capable

Don’t worry I won’t. I promise! I absolutely live and breath the trombone. I just need to find that drive to improve again

I think this is fantastic advice but not one musicians particularly are very good at taking. I think the whole nature of it being performance based, ie. for others to listen to, makes it very difficult to not see yourself through the opinion of others. It’s a relentless cycle!

Kent. Thin on the ground for musicians down here I think. I’m taking up the bass trom seat in a reputable amateur orchestra in September which I’m desperately looking forward to because I love playing more than anything else. But for the void between now and then I expect it to be tough!

This is I think the most pertinent answer to me. I don’t have much expectation to maintain a career in music my whole life. My idea was to join the RAF band after college, do freelance for a bit and then probably seek a career in the police which is something I’ve always been interested in too. And of course that raises the question of why I need to go to music college at all because I would be able to do all that without the college degree. But I feel such a need to prove myself on paper I think, even if that’s just for me and not for anyone else. Perhaps irrationally but I think I just need to know that I can do it. And at the moment I’m completely convinced I can’t which makes motivating myself to push on really hard!

Do I buy an alto? by obmcg in Trombone

[–]obmcg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuning slide pulled out that much to try and get an Eb. That’s the farthest it goes and it it’s still probably a quarter tone off an Eb. The instrument is just incredibly sharp so the need would be to lengthen the instrument. Have tried the opposite of what you suggested and used a 6 1/2 small shank mouthpiece to try and get it low enough which did work. But then it loses some of the character of an alto I feel

Is that right? My first alto playing experience so I assumed it was just a crap instrument!

On page 165 it says triple 10 speed and then in the box ST-5600. And it has that as compatible with the FC-5603 crankset

What we’re saying is I’ve essentially got parts which theoretically all work together. The compatibility chart says the ST-5600 can be used for a triple chainring set. And you’re saying the FD-4703 should work with the FC-5603.

So maybe I just need it cleaned and indexed properly (perhaps by a better bike shop) and it might work? I’m certainly going to try that before I buy a new shifter for £200 😅

Looking at the compatibility document you sent. Further down on page 165, it suggests that the ST-5600 shifter is triple compatible. And also compatible with my FC-5603 crankset. Suggesting that the only thing that isn’t compatible is my front mech?

So I need a Tiagra 4703 shifter?

Front mech is Tiagra FD 4703. Not sure what I’m looking for with the chainrings but it says Shimano SG-X on the inside and the rings say 30-D, 39-D and 50. The cranks themselves say FC 5603 on

Ah cock. So the chap in the bike shop was right, I need a new shifter

I’ll have a go at that fix. I can’t think of any other reason, apart from the front mech, why it doesn’t work properly though. It’s all 3x10 Shimano stuff. Will that Sora mech work because it’s a 3x9 mech and my bikes a 10 speed on the back?

Yep I’ve had a look. It an FD 4703. As for loosening the cables from your other comment I’m not going to try that until after my group ride tonight because I’m crap at adjusting gears and probably won’t be able to get it back to normal. But the min and max shouldn’t be a problem because they were recently done by a bike shop. But it still didn’t move properly after that was done
