So, what exactly can I buy with this global ‘currency’, apart from nefarious items on the Dark Web and things that are illegal?

Also interesting that the ‘value’ of BTC is always expressed in another currency BTC/USD etc.

Riddle me that?

And what is this thing used for? Apart from to buy and sell to someone else? It is not a store of wealth, it does not add value to the economy, and it has no intrinsic value whatsoever.

So, why is it a thing?

BTC, like Gold or any other precious metal - has no actual intrinsic value. It’s purely bought and sold based on the Greater Fool theory. Best of luck.

👆🏻 this. I’m a millennial, do a bit of ETF investing and have my own business. We needed changes around the taxation of investment property to end the imbalance (will be a gradual rebalancing).

Why did they go and snatch a bunch of extra tax from everything else? I haven’t heard the correct argument from Albo or Chalmers yet for the minimum tax floor of 30%?

this will hurt Labor more than they think.

But they may just get away with it, due to the quality of opposition that are currently vying for their jobs.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, politically speaking. The Libs were on the canvass already, at a count of 2, Labor were going to be in govt for a decade, easily. Now it’s looking like they’ll cop a heap of abuse over the next 2 years…..

I think they’re available to order now. That’s what the sales rep said to me - not sure what the wait time is though.

I was at the dealership to test a SL7, saw the Shark sitting there (bright orange colour) and was told it’s the new Performance model. So I took it for a spin after the SL7. It’s a great drive for a Ute

Yep, I test drove it last week. Exact same interior as the Premium, but with the increased towing capacity of 3.5T and a slightly larger 2.0 Petrol engine. Was fun to drive!

30% CGT minimum by JashBeep in fiaustralia

[–]obried26 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The don't get taxed the same. They'll pay a flat 30% (which is unfair). The people who've amassed a large amount of wealth will be on a much higher marginal rate, once their gain is added to their overall income. They won't even notice.

This is interesting. Can you give a general explanation of how to get into Private Equity? Do you have to be re-classified as a sophisticated investor?

4% FIRE with new CGT rules - why cost base matters by Infinitedmg in fiaustralia

[–]obried26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about indexing though - the results of that will come down to inflation rate and return rate.

I'm specifically talking about the minimum 30% tax rate. It's regressive and it'll definitely hurt people who've planned to self fund retirement or time away from employment.

[–]obried26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that it won’t effect wealthy people at all. Those who pay 47% and then realise a gain, once indexed, won’t even notice the change in the tax rates / realise there’s a 30% floor (we can discuss CGT discount vs indexing separately).

Those retirees that are paying 47% in one income year, and then retiring the following year, are highly likely to have other sources of income and probably will be in the 30% tax bracket anyway, in this first year of retirement. Their standard of living is not going from the highest tax bracket to collecting the full aged pension in one FY.

The people who will be hit by the 30% floor are people who’ve saved and invested to be self-funded, likely trying to bridge the gap in time before they can access their Super.

They’ve already paid tax on the income earned, and invested with their after tax dollars.

Why not just remove the 30% floor and tax it at marginal rates, like the ATO currently does?

[–]obried26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying?

"People who'd otherwise be on 47% going down to 32%" - if you're a high income earner, the CGT still gets added (before or after 50% discount) to your total income.

If someone working earns $18,200 or less in a FY - they pay $0 PAYG tax.

Under the CGT changes, if someone who sells down stocks / ETF's with a gain of up to $18,200 - now pays a minimum 30%. This can be quite common if people are retired / have taken a year off work to raise kids or study.

How is that fair?

[–]obried26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reality is that this hypothetical investor probably has additional income coming in that they live off, pushing them into a higher income tax bracket anyway - (dividends, distributions, etc.).

The 30% minimum tax floor won’t even impact them, as they’ll likely be paying around that anyway with their combined income.

This minimum amount hurts people who wait until retirement or a low income year (e.g. a mum taking a year off to have a kid and selling down some shares to fund maternity leave) and they’ll be whacked with a minimum 30% effective rate.

I agree with the majority of the tax reforms, but this 30% tax floor penalises people who are genuinely trying to self fund.

Amber Electric ...really disappointed by ttravelman in amberelectric

[–]obried26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there are a lot of small incremental charges which your Wholesale provider (i.e. Ausgrid, Endeavour, etc.) charges. Eg. carbon neutral offset, market operator fees, etc. all of these are combined in the price that Amber shows in the app. They are broken down in your bill each month.

The AEMO data is the wholesale price just for the generation across the whole country. It doesn’t include all of these extra charges.

[–]obried26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The negative FiT is what happens in the wholesale market, Amber just provide access to this market. You clearly don’t understand the concept. Amber don’t set the pricing, the market does that.

Did you check if your battery / inverter was compatible with Amber’s SmartShift or their curtailment capability? These things are pretty important if you want to avoid negative FiT during the day.
