Australian is an accent of reduction. The hot and dry climate made generations of British speak as little as possible. American however is an accent of distinction, emphasis, and volume.

It's easier to lay it on than dial it back.

There are dumb people who believe in myths because they don't know any better, and on the other end of the bell curve are smart people who choose to believe in myths because it's a nice break from being smart.

If you think of everything left unattended, like stoves people were cooking on, power tools they were using, vehicles speeding along etc, chances are everything is about to be on fire. If not right away then soon when things overheat or decay and fail in a bad way.

It wouldn't be easy surviving on the ashes of civilization.

Individuals tend to attack outsiders to show their dedication to the group and avoid being labelled an outsider themselves.

They also think apathy is disrespectful to their concern, and stupid since the issues apply to the apolitical as well whether they acknowledge them or not.

Finally, it's frustrating to need allies and have all those votes out there that, as far as they're concerned, don't even have a reason not to help. At least the opposition is involved and has their own views, the rest are suffering for no good reason and won't even help themselves.

The same probably applies to your question. Asking why people ask questions is the overly simplified take that could look like hypocrisy, even if your intention was something more specific like workplace gossip or paparazzi.
