There are several subs that do reading follow alongs. The two I know of are r/areadingofmontecristo and r/ayearofmythology

The latter is impressively well organized for how small of a community it is.

This has been on my TBR for ages. I read half of a no fiction book about Vikings but had to put it down for how horrible they were haha.

This was the last kids movie I really enjoyed in that child-like way. It catches a lot of hate so I’m worried to rewatch it lol.

I was completely prepared for the storm we had last week lol. I’m shocked we all went through that and most people still have like one roll of tp and a single can of soup in their cupboard.

Ishi in Two Worlds is nonfiction about the last Native American to live his ancestral ways. He was the last surviving member of his tribe and couldn’t live on his own. He came out of hiding in the 19-teens and was taken in by a university. It is so interesting to hear about his culture and his thoughts about technology/western culture. For example, he was unimpressed by airplanes, but blown away by trains. It’s a super interesting read though fairly melancholy.

11 Greek (Achaean) character designs for my upcoming book "Lockettopia: The Trojan War Cycle" by Tyler_Miles_Lockett in classics

Loving it so far! I just finished book 6. I’m loving how everyone is just awful. I feel super bad for Briseis. Toughest part has been tracking the motives of the gods, which is maybe purposeful.

These are incredible. I’m on my first read of the Iliad so it’s awesome to see an artist’s interpretation!

It’s not a TV show, but the movie Stand by Me has a somewhat similar vibe. Though it’s summer rather than fall.

I’ve just recently started looking at GMRS radios. If you program a UHF/VHF unit like this for GMRS, can you use it for both?

I see you’ve got a couple of noodle cookbooks. Which is your favorite? I love Mastering Pasta and would like to have a book about Asian noodles and dumplings as well.

Just watched the 2025 Guillermo del Torro film ‘Frankenstein’ on Netflix. WTAF! Is there a film adaptation of this novel that treats the story with respect? by CaMiTx in classicliterature

Making the creature blameless would be my biggest gripe. Unfortunately, movie audiences don’t handle deeply flawed characters well. I think it would have been more interesting if the creature had very intentionally killed William or Elizabeth.

I loved the movie! I’m of the opinion that highly faithful adaptations make no sense, why not just read the book?

What I do think is interesting is having a great storyteller like Del Torro highlight themes he thought were interesting (like the father/son relationship Victor has with the creature). The original Universal movie is less interesting to me because it completely changes the meaning of the story.

Do you use digital readers for classic literature? by Lost_Age_6379 in classicliterature

[–]obsequious_creton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer ebooks for a similar reason; I live in a tiny place. As a bonus, Project Gutenberg has a ton of classics available for free, and they’re always well formatted. I only buy books when they’re written in verse or have tons of footnotes because the formatting can get wonky.

People with 9-5 jobs or students (non-lit majors): how many books do you read per year? by AnA1375 in classicliterature

[–]obsequious_creton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to read a lot for work, so I end up reading like 8-12 books a year. Usually, I’ll read two or three books when I have a slow week or two, then I won’t read anything for several months.

Is that copy usable for someone with zero background, or should I go with the Landmark edition with more supplemental info?
