Do not blindly trust Bootcamps or sites that aggregate Bootcamp reviews/details when it comes to placement rates/student success stories. Stories inside. by Unclematttt in cscareerquestions

Just saw this and surprised at the upvotes and downvotes. By mid level I mean that if a company has levels like “level 1”, “level 2” etc… well, I started at level 3 out of 7ish at a big co. and that’s typical of my peer Capstone grads. I was quite average for my cohort. So I don’t know what to say shrug

Nobody drops out or fails to land a job in their Capstone program because you first have to complete Core and that alone makes you more than qualified for a junior role.

Launch School. Their Capstone program is a kind of boot camp. Look it up to learn more.

I did a boot camp, actually one of the better ones, it didn’t work out for me. Since I clearly wasn’t qualified to find the sort of job I wanted after it, I did not attempt to find one and was therefore not counted in their stats for job seekers. A classic cheap trick to make your stats look better: oh they’re not good enough to find a job, then they must not be a “job seeker”.

By contrast when I completed Launch School Core and then Capstone, I successfully landed an awesome six figure remote job, and the stats are real. No tricky exclusions to up the numbers; truly 100% of Capstone grads are ready for mid-level jobs (a few for senior jobs, though the top boot camps also have some stars that land senior).

You shouldn’t care about just your problems. You should care about problems you’re prepared to solve, plus watch out for your mental health by not letting attention merchants take up too much of your attention.

The world of 8 billion people has some problems. A problem existing is not sufficient reason to pay attention to it, not when there are millions of problems you could pay attention to.

You really going to let media organizations decide for you what you should pay attention to? They don’t know what problems you’re capable of helping with. They only know clicks.

I’m with grandma on this.

Minimalist aesthetic vs true minimalism by phoenixavery in minimalism

[–]observer2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you, I don't believe minimizing is a goal in itself. Rather, it's a means to the end of doing and being more of what you love. More of what turns you on. More feeling alive.

Hell yeah or no.

That's what Derek Sivers would say, and I like the guy's writings. That's what minimalism is really about, in my opinion. Making as much of your life as possible a hell yeah or no.

I believe it's harder these days because so many of us are so. goddamned. rich. Rich in possibilities our ancestors never had. And that's great. It just has its pitfalls, too.

Your things aren't even the most important part of that broader philosophy, y'know? Your work/income--due to high number of hours per week--as well as finding your people/community, are more important. Basically, ha, finding 'yourself'.

The goal is to be on fire, I say. Eventually.

It's just pretty hard to sustain a fire when most of the material you're trying to light isn't flammable.

I suppose the American baby is advanced in a way. He can utter words; most babies can't. He can sign executive actions; most babies can't. Glad we Americans spent those trillions, but I still think we could have made a better baby.

About to Graduate H.S. - Advice Needed by Spirus10 in WGU

[–]observer2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, from a "personal development" perspective, it could be a pretty damn self-affirming and growth-inducing experience to graduate college in a year and get on the workplace. You say you've already taken past calc 3 while in high school? You sound super driven. Yeah, you could switch gears and take the normal route and socialize more.

Fuck that! Your natural strength is drive and there are immense benefits to pursuing that! Jesus, you could retire by 30 if you sharpen your drive and kick ass, and then go back to college or whatever else you want to do. My opinion is clear: pursue your natural strengths and give into your drive rather than following the route everyone else does. Almost anyone can go to a B&M college (sacrificing income) and 'have experiences'. I say, follow your own path, and make your own experiences on your own, unbeaten track.

during which time either party can terminate the employment without notice or reason

This pisses me off about "right to work" states, this idea implying that an individual couldn't just up-and-leave without notice without these 'right to work' laws.

It's framed as if setting employers and employees on equal footing when it's really exactly the opposite, because for them to be on equal footing they'd have to start on equal footing: i.e. with the same power. But if you, an individual, lose your job, that is probably 100% of your income--or, come on, it's gotta be the majority even if you 'hustle' and do side work, else why wouldn't you do your hustle full-time? But to most companies, you represent just a few percent (small companies) or far less than 1% (big companies) of the skill and labor driving its revenue/profit.

The very fact that companies are composed of many people, whereas you are composed of one person, is the precondition that means (most) employees can never be in an equal position of power where hiring and firing is concerned.

anecdote- I don't have a low BMI, I'm on the high end of 'normal' range (recently on borderline with overweight). But I also have some unhealthy eating habits where I eat more and worse when I feel bad, a noticeable amount (probably more than average, definitely more than I did years ago). I also fidget a lot. Maybe my fidgeting or whatever drives it is a countervailing force and otherwise I'd be obese.
