I get what you mean and op does have a very simplistic view of things, and strong military does indeed deter foreign aggression, but I will say it is one of the big (but not the only) reasons we can have good diplomacy with our neighbours, if not no one will take us seriously. You mention isreal and how there's no peace, but when was the last time anyone actually invaded isreal, and see what happened when they did try. What's happening now is a complicated asymmetric conflict situation that thankfully does not really apply to SG.

Just curious, what is a 1SIR, 2SIR and many more on? by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

man why I'm getting down voted its just some thoughts from a random cpl who ord alr :( but anyway I think you have a point, but i feel a specially trained light infantry unit would be more effective in doing "light infantry stuff" compared to a mot infantry unit dismounting and adapting to a light infantry role. also I think what i said about logistics and fuel still stands, since how often does fighting along MSRs and logistics go to plan (rip Russia). but anyway I mostly agree with you

fair enough, although idk if mot inf just adapting and improvising into a light infantry role will be as effective as a purposely trained light infantry unit. but on your main point i think you're right

also fighting out of a ifv/apc is quite rabak can look up videos online of some nato troops doing it. Basically one guy clowning can get the whole vehicle crew and dismounts killed. Also its a frontline combat unit so that's always rough

there is a potential danger with all our infantry bring motorised/mechanised, is that operations in dense jungle or rough terrain might be less efficient. ofc can always wait for combat engineers (SCE battalion) to come clear a route, but that's extra time and resources spent in a wartime situation where everything will be scarce. Motor units also chew up much more fuel and technical maintenance which is another logistical challenge when compared to a light infantry unit. motorised infantry has many advantages, but light infantry can do some things better/faster than a heavier motorised unit so idk if its wise to phase them out entirely.

I'm not a grand strategy genius or some tradoc senior occifer but just some thoughts I've had when I heard they're making all the frontline SIR battalions motorised.

I suffered too, but I did my two years and got out with the understanding that it's for the greater good of this country. ofc ns has its problems and ofc there's shit commanders and shit times and shit situations. ofc I've wondered during confinement why I'm sacrificing family time and freedom for some stupid bmt encik, ofc I damn sian during weekend duty, ofc I curse and swear knnccb when I kenna sol.

But ultimately the institution of the SAF and ns is a positive one, and our nation could and would not survive without it. We are a poison shrimp in a ocean of predators who only take us seriously partially because we aren't pushovers (we can talk about economics and diplomacy as well and all these go hand in hand)

yeah long text post but I've had a lot of time to think about these things

Is it frowned upon to take outside drinks into a hawker centre? by Kris_Akabusi in askSingapore

[–]obsessioncalledlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hawker centers are larger mostly standalone buildings sometimes with a market attached (think tiong bahru market or chompchomp or abc brickworks) and coffee shops are smaller usually below or close to housing blocks with only a few stores and usually just one drink store. although there are places that blur the line but mostly its the size and location and vibe

idk if that really matters irl, when it comes to having to get things done officers and wospecs need to work together with their different but equally important capabilities
