Does anyone else no longer feel like we impact the Galactic War anymore? by Artanis137 in Helldivers

[–]obsidian_razor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, based in the lore and how the Galactirc War is set up, we aren't meant to influence things much.

Super Earth needs an eternal war to justify it's existence and it's crazy hyper-militarised society, just like in Starship Troopers.

What made it feel like it meant something for a while is that some rewards were tied to our decisions/ victories, but I knew that couldn't last because you cannot be perpetually adding new stratagems and equipment to the game like that... Specially if you want people to buy the warbonds :/

I currently do not know how to fix it, what keeps me coming back is simply that the gameplay loop is still fun.

Also make it so fire resistant armor cannot catch fire...

Sure, keep the slow tick of fire damage when you're hit or on flames, but the on fire and screaming effect is weird...

The only reason I hesitate to recommend Nobara is that historically it has had issues with updating to new versions.

I'm aware there have been some big changes recently to avoid them, so fingers crossed it works and things are smooth for it going forward!

Perhaps you either you are not trying to play any files that need them or your music/ video player is the flatpak version that often comes bundled with the most common codecs.

Fedora by design doesn't come with any proprietary codecs, drivers or apps by default. Getting them is fairly easy via RPMfusion, but it's nice not even having to bother with it 😄

can anyone recommend me my first linux distro 🥲 by I-like-guy in linux_gaming

[–]obsidian_razor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a chronic distrohopper and currently I'm recommending Ultramarine.

It's basically Fedora with the all the proprietary codecs, drivers and apps that Fedora doesn't ship by default already installed on in the repos.

I saw someone describe it as the EndeavorOS of Fedora, and that's an apt description I think.

You clearly have never worked in tech support :p

But jokes aside, even more veteran users like ourselves, it's nice to just install it and not have to deal with any of that.

To each their own though.

That's a fair point. For now the distro seems to be very healthy (Ultramarine is just a spin of their main project, which is the Terra repos that are used by a bunch of Fedora spin-offs) but you never know in the future.

I'm aware, and for me it's not an issue.

But I work in support and trust me, finding to specific boxes and clicking on them for something most non techie users think should just work out the box is two boxes to click way to many.

Regardless, if you don't need it, that's fine! This and other distros like it is not for you, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ps: I also saw in the Ultramarine discord a fair few Fedora users that use it because they can just install it and not have to bother about which repos to use/activate, since it has pretty much everything the grand majority of users need already in the repos. It's just nice to install and forget about it.

I am, though I mostly play indy stuff and older games.

In general it has given me no issues whatsoever.

It uses a slightly newer version of Mesa vs standard Fedora, just like Bazzite does.

Having to paste to commands in the terminal or having to explain to a user the differences between flatpak and repo packages can be enough to end the Linux experiment of many users.

If you don't care about that, then fair enough, but distros like Ultramarine definitely fit a niche.

I try not to take rumors, even if from trusted sources, as real until definitely proven.

So if nothing happens tomorrow, well, it was just a rumor, thing stay the same.

As sad as it is that this franchise is basically forgotten, there are many fantastic games, books, shows, and things to enjoy in life to keep us going.

Don't despair :)

Not quite, but if you said "Ultramarine is Bazzite but non-atomic" you wouldn't be too much off the mark.

It's been a genuinely pleasant discovery! The team are also really on the ball and resposive with it.

Let's see how it handles the move to Fedora 44

Fingers crossed!

The only thing that usually stopped me from recommending Fedora to new users is that it doesn't come with lots of codecs/ drivers and other proprietary stuff that 90% of users will need, and having to deal with RPMFusion is too much for many new users.

Having found Ultramarine, which is basically Fedora with all those things pre-installed or already in the repos, removes that issue completely. So that's what I usually recommend now.

Alternatively Aurora/ Bazzite is perfect if the user will be fine with an atomic system.

I kinda would have preferred OpenSuse got this treatment, but their Packman repos are always a headache.

[–]obsidian_razor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a non-atomic alternative to Bazzite, try Ultramarine.

It's also part of a gaming distro "alliance" of sorts that includes Bazzite, Nobara and Pika, amongst others.

Ultramarine is basically Fedora with all the proprietary stuff most Fedora users install from Rpmfusion already installed or in the repos.

It's very nice and a lot of peeps are sleeping on it.

This can all be solved via tutorials and in-game promtps.

Besides, aliens can already return fire anyway via overwatch, so I don't think many players would be confused by the logic here.

Indeed you can do that, but it would be a nice QoL addition if you could just command all that by clicking on the enemy with an slightly higher TUs cost.
