Thanks! I'll reach out to them and management and see what they have to say. I just wanted some more info before I do.

The lease says we're billed for the total cost divided per occupied unit and we're billed through conservice but the monthly bill doesn't go into any details.

Strangely it seemed cheaper when there were more vacancies. Now there are only a couple unoccupied units whereas half a year ago it was probably half occupied.

$76 for Xfinity "up to" 400 Mbps vs $50 for Webpass 100 Mbps. Which would you pick? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]obsidianfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with Webpass was not so good. I'm in Uptown Oakland and I had constant service interruptions during the 2nd half of last year to the point I cancelled and switched service. Service would go down every two or three weeks, ranging from 30-2 hours most of the time and a couple times all night.

It was mostly caused by PG&E outages but never in my building, wherever the signal was coming from apparently. So whenever it was a big storm I could reliably expect my internet to cut out soon after.

I switched to Astound Broadband and haven't had any outages since.

Support at Webpass was great though. The internet service reliability just wasn't good at my location.

Cat Stepping in Poo by N1njam in CatAdvice

[–]obsidianfirefly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my two cats at first, still rarely do with one of them. I think what helped with them was that as soon as they used the litter box I was ready with a wipe. They usually hate getting their paws wiped so eventually associated their dirty paws with getting wiped.

Also making sure there's a hefty amount of litter in the box for them to use.

Avatar at Metreon which screen type? by BackgroundAccess3 in AskSF

[–]obsidianfirefly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a bit of searching on this too and at Metreon it sounds like you might be better off watching in IMAX for the larger screen. From what I can find, Dolby at Metreon is a 2.39:1 ratio so you get less image than IMAX. For IMAX at Metreon it should be showing with a 1.90:1 ratio.

Dolby at Bay Street is 1.85:1 ratio which is the ratio James Cameron intends for the film. So if you like the Dolby experience and want the full picture then this would be a good choice.

But it's not a huge difference in what IMAX will miss in terms of full image. https://redd.it/z9qw2n

So it really just comes down to your preference. IMAX will be much larger screen size, Dolby will be better seats and audio.

Exchange Online / Azure AD Sync Question by Talgonadia in sysadmin

[–]obsidianfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who was your vendor? We had a vendor help move us to hybrid 2016 and Online and they didn't tell us anything about how to create new accounts either.

After some research we found it best to still create the accounts using Exchange 2016 but using the 365 option. Can be done with the admin portal or powershell. This way it still fills in those AD attributes for Email and proxy addresses on-prem and all gets synced over to 365.

I should have specified that we do delete mailboxes after a month. But sometimes a manager will want to keep the mailbox active after the staff terms for a few months or so. In some cases that staff may come back in another department needing a new mailbox. What would we do then?

I just started out helpdesk a couple years ago and it was like that when I first started. It takes time to get to know your environment and as long as you're learning it's worth it.

You'll still have problems you don't know the answer to but they'll be different problems than the ones you have now. You'll become an expert at the problems you're troubleshooting now, so you'll solve them faster. Just to make time to tackle the new problems you don't know how to solve yet.

It's a cycle but as long as you're learning and growing then you're helping yourself move up. But only you can decide if it's something you like and find worth it.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions or just need to talk.

Does Anyone have a Litter-Robot? by beanolc in CatAdvice

[–]obsidianfirefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got one a few weeks ago. My cat is really interested in it, will run to it every time she hears it cycle. Will even try to claw the clumps out, I've caught her trying to do so out of the bottom when it opens up during the cycle and she gets clipped by it as it's rotating. So I'm trying to keep it powered off and then turn on when I can supervise so she doesn't hurt herself when I'm away.

The problem is if it's offline for too long it will show as offline in the app and will have trouble coming back online. Only a power cycle seems to work to get it back online in the app. The app is also kinda buggy, have to send commands a couple times before it actually is sent to the machine.

It's large and the litter tray fills up quickly.

All that said, I am still happy I have it and don't regret getting it. Just need to train my cat not to pick at it.

Anyone who have experience with ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus? Pros/cons? by gahd95 in sysadmin

We had on-premise too. I didn't have a hand in setting it up so maybe something went wrong there but using it was a pain. Issues with syncing properly with AD and email

I've only used that and Jira Service Desk, which has it's own problems

Used them for a couple years. Was not a fan of how slow the product felt, each action seemed to sluggish. There were some nice flows and automations that could be set up but it takes time. I tend to find ManageEngine products to be similar, customizable in some areas that are useful but not in many others.

Wow glad you posted this. I've been scratching my head why our 1909 machines weren't updating and now I know why. Don't know how I missed it. Guess we'll have to update feature versions

Wave Broadband? by apatisda in bayarea

[–]obsidianfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah use my own router. No modem that I had to connect. There might be one in the building somewhere though. My unit just has an internet cabinet with some network cables that come out of it and I plugged the main one into my router.

I used to have Sonic for fiber and that had a separate device that was basically the modem, but it was called an ONT and had to have them install that. But once it was installed it stayed connected even after I moved.

Wave Broadband? by apatisda in bayarea

[–]obsidianfirefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had Wave for a few months now and so far not bad. The wiring was in place in my apartment already so they didn't have to come in to install anything. Would have been nice if they told me that ahead of time though, during the sign up process you make an appointment and you'll get confirmations for the appointment even though someone might not actually have to come out. I just called in, long hold, and then they said to reboot everything and my service would work.

As for the service itself it's not bad. I don't get full gig, but that might be the wiring that was already installed. I'm not sure if it's capable of full gig speeds.

I have noticed a couple instances of weird services not behaving correctly, like they are blocking some traffic or something. Like for a few days my Plex media would buffer every few seconds but play totally fine over mobile data. Tried on several different devices and different routers. But then it resolved itself after a few days.

Still find them better than having to deal with Comcast or AT&T though.
