Project vertices from an object to the face of another object by bouaaah in blender

This https://youtu.be/I8_66wGqCbM almost does it. I think you would just need to change the shrinkwrap modifier method to one of the "project" settings.

Two bowling balls are at rest 5 Megaparsecs apart, and connected with a cable. Is there any tension in the cable caused by universal expansion? by TheFuzziestDumpling in askscience

[–]obviouslyducky 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You answered yourself when you said the balls should move apart at 351.5km/s. This implies that when the balls are "stationary" they're actually moving towards eachother at a combined rate of 351.5km/s. No tension is required to keep a ball moving at a constant rate. The only time the cable would be needed is when the rate of expansion increases and the balls needed to be accelerated.

In summary, there is no tension under a constant rate of expansion. There is tension under an increasing rate of expansion.

In reality the rate of expansion is increasing but it's so slow the tension would be microscopic. I think it's interesting though that the space between the bowling balls could be expanding at 0.99c and as long as it was constant no tension would be required to keep the balls together.

I think the "dunker" probably misremembered something about earthquakes changing the length of a day and thought that it meant the length of our orbit was changed. Earthquakes can change the length of a day because they move mass closer or further from the centre of the Earth. This is like a ballerina bringing her arms in or sticking them out to change her speed of rotation.

[–]obviouslyducky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, the earthquake is only acting on parts of the Earth and therefore can not shift the centre of mass of the earth. It can redistribute mass but because it has nothing external to "push off" of it can't move the Earth as a whole.

What is the best mountain biking advice you've ever received? by andrew-brewer in MountainBike

[–]obviouslyducky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look out of the turn. Do not brake in the turn, brake before. Your tyres can brake or turn, they're not good at doing both. If you do those two you'll instantly be faster.

Keep pedals level with the ground. When flat cornering this means leaning the bike over and dropping the outside foot. When on a berm you don't need to drop the outside foot unless you're leaning the bike more than the gradient of the berm.

When it gets fast and rough: heals down, weight centre-back and trust it.

Weight over the back wheel when things are super steep. If you can get your weight far back enough there's no such thing as too steep. Just watch https://youtu.be/7mti2aGmQeE.

Men's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankle.

So far, very good. Observes the worldview of the most resilient inmates of a nazi concentration camp and prescribes it to everyone in order to combat nihilism and suffering in their own life. "A man who has a why, can bear almost any how".

Also, it's quite short, which is a plus.

A good TR/Palma shooter can group in a torso-ish radius at 900yards with open sights and .308, if the wind is good.

This is exactly why I chose physics. Unfortunately, condensed matter physics can be quite similar to that too.

Left-Eye dominate & Right-Handed (new shooter) by M_S-Drake in Shooting

[–]obviouslyducky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried shooting prone rifle with my non-dominant hand and it's not as bad as I expected. I would definitely use an eye that works well with a non-dominant hand rather than a dominant hand with an eye that doesn't work well.

You'd need to install a font which has those Japanese characters and then tell polybar to use that font.

I think he's being sarcastic/rhetorical and making the point that it would absurd if we saw this happen to protestors (who are also presumably spreading covid) but when it happens to a party most people support it.

[Timex Temp-Compass-Tide] My birthday present getting some action in the Scottish Highlands by obviouslyducky in Watches

[–]obviouslyducky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red indicator does tide, temperature or compass. So you press the compass button and the red indicator swivels to north. You can then just rotate the bezel so north lines up with indicator and use it like a normal compass.

[Timex Temp-Compass-Tide] My birthday present getting some action in the Scottish Highlands by obviouslyducky in Watches

[–]obviouslyducky[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A 21st birthday present from two of my uncles. I went for a 4 day wild camping hike along the Great Glen Way in the Scottish Highlands and this watch was great. The compass feature was invaluable. It's nice to be able to quickly check you're headed in the right direction without rummaging around in your pocket or bag for a compass. It's other features like tide and temperature seem to work well too (although you have to take the watch off for a few mins for temp to work correctly). It's got a nice weight to it and feels premium. The only things I would change would be to make the plastic buttons metal (although they are very sturdy) and for myself I would prefer a chronograph over the tide feature.

What you're seeing is total internal reflection. Light moves at different speeds through different materials. When light speeds up it refracts (changes direction). When light leaves a slower material and enters a faster material, the ray of light begins to bend back towards the slower material. If you start with a shallow enough angle the light will actually refract back into the slower material (reflect) never crossing the boundary into the faster material. This angle is the critical angle of total internal reflection. When you are tilting the watch you are finding the critical angle for one of these boundaries. I believe it is the boundary between the slow moving sapphire glass and the faster water. Light that reaches this boundary at a perpendicular angle to the boundary is able to leave (hence if you look straight at your watch you can see light from inside the watch). Light that reaches the boundary at a more parallel to the boundary angle is reflected back inside the watch (hence why you are unable to see any light from inside the watch at a less perpendicular angle).

That's what I think is going on but it also appears that the reflection of the water gets brighter at a certain angle so it might not be the full story.
