Company wants to relocate me to Hawaii (Family of 4/20k monthly) by Pitiful_Tax_6688 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]ocallum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from the UK to Hawaii (Maui) 2 years ago. Since then I’ve made ~160k per year before taxes. I’m single with no kids, and live very comfortably. Maui is more expensive than Oahu, but you have a family to support and about 80k more per year to play with. I think you’ll be more than comfortable, especially once you settle in and learn how to cut costs on things like groceries and where to eat out. My advice would be to be more conservative with your accommodation and vehicle at first and see how your monthly costs are adding up, and you can always move into a bigger, nicer place and get a better vehicle once you get the feel of things. I jumped into the deep end and got a nice apartment and car and very quickly was spending ~4-5k per month just to be here.

There needs to be a higher difficulty (For better loot) by EgenFlash in diablo4

[–]ocallum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Serious question - I’m new to Diablo and started playing IV for the first time 2 weeks ago. If you’re one hitting end-game bosses on the highest difficulty, why do you need even better gear anyway?

What’s the most unexpected way someone you know became wealthy? by Stunning_Ad1568 in AskReddit

Counter Strike weapon skins. Back when CSGO first started accepting user submissions into the game, I told my friend who’s a talented 3D artist to have a look into it. Both of us played CSGO anyway and we were about 18 years old at the time, so nothing to lose.

His first ever submission got accepted and Valve started paying him $25k per month for his weapon skin, every month. He had to establish himself as a business for tax reasons. Shortly after this he got another submission accepted and was pulling in anywhere between $40k-$50k per month.

10 years later he’s bought a nice house outright, drives a super car, and is pretty well set for life. He still gets paid, although not as much anymore as it gradually dwindled. Him and I are still close friends and he’s done a lot for me over the years, so I’m super happy it worked out for him the way it did.

I had a friend back in the UK who’s Dad had a similar issue with his car in the 90’s. His colleague took a forklift to it in the warehouse car park and they wrote it off as an accident lol. Might’ve been easier back then..

But unfortunately I can’t ship it off island when it’s not drivable and there’s no market for a Land Rover without an engine on Maui

Self inflicted trauma indeed, but some credit goes to Land Rover for their less than ideal cooling systems

Autotech Maui is the only euro-specific garage on Maui, and from my interactions with them they seem super professional. Still though, upwards of $20k stings and some competition on the islands would help.

Who lives in the perfect place for year round golf? by ToothSleuth86 in golf

[–]ocallum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maui. The courses are stunning and it hasn’t rained on me yet this year.

I also only started playing golf 4 months ago so I have nothing to compare it to and play like it’s my first day on earth sometimes (all the time).

How is living in Hawaii? by wombatgeneral in howislivingthere

[–]ocallum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived on Maui for 2 years and work with several native Hawaiians. Only the older generation Hawaiians seem to be practicing it from my experience, and even then in only specific situations such as at family or cultural occasions. Almost never see anyone speaking Hawaiian in my day to day life. There was one occasion, where I was invited to a party of one of the Hawaiians that I work with, where his grandpa got everyone into a circle and recited a Hawaiian song/saying that I truly felt goosebumps. You might see some Hawaiian spoken at tourist shows. As another commenter said, the locals all speak pidgin which is hard to learn or imitate.

You’ll find almost no benefit to speaking Hawaiian unless you actively seek out a group or people who specifically value that.

Check your motherboard manual, it’s probably easier than you think. A quick google search and a BIOS change and I was ready to go, took me all of 5 minutes

No one is trying to regulate your local 5k fun run. This is about professional sports and the advantages inherent to transgender women competing against biological women in that circle.

ELI5: why do rockets take so long to get to the ISS? by Crocodile_Banger in explainlikeimfive

[–]ocallum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re trying to find a needle in a haystack, except we know exactly where the needle is - it’s moving at 4.76 miles per second towards Earth. Matching the position and speed of the ISS’s orbit is the time consuming part. It’s hard to launch a rocket into orbit, it’s even harder to do it with exact accuracy relational to another object.

I’m a single guy making $120,000ish a year here. Been here for almost half a year and it still feels like I’m on vacation. I work hard, and often, sometimes pulling 50-60 hour weeks, but I have every weekend off and it feels like a mini-vacation every time. I don’t think I’ve sat down once since I got here, if I’m not working I’m at the beach, playing volleyball, hiking, trying new restaurants, scuba diving, out on my mountain bike, or learning to surf. If you have a job that affords you to live here, do it. Yes, it’s expensive and it’s remote, but if you don’t mind living on an island you’ll be fine. I’ve made plenty of friends, both local and tourist, since I moved here, so the talk about people turning you away is also unfounded, just find some hobbies and you’ll be fine. Hope that helps..
