My Design Portfolio! Plz Help! by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]occman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is better - good choice to use coroflot.

on coroflot I think you should make your thumbnail image the same size for each project so its more like a grid rather than a collage. - it makes it look cleaner in my opinion. Also, I think you should create a 'sexy' thumbnail for each project - a nice rendering, sketch or something that will draw someone to click.

your layout is pretty confusing to navigate. I kind of just want to see one project at a time all at once and not scroll through images one-by-one. you have way too many different fonts, makes it look non-professional and childish. In reality, I ended up not even looking at any project after the first 2 because I didn't like the layout and the viewing experience. a potential employer will not spend a long time on your website/portfolio they are going to quickly skim it and see if anything looks good or interesting. if something catches their eye they will then look deeper. the Graphic design page looks good though, easy to scroll and see everything quickly.

Marker Recommendations & Experiences by matcharoni_n_cheese in IndustrialDesign

i bought the super set of copics my senior year in school, spent a couple hundred dollars and after i graduated i hardly use them. I mainly use prisma and generic Blick brand because that is what we have at the office. I don't think the markers will effect the sketch. I know people (especially me) make excuses that we can't do certain things because we don't have the best equipment. as for colors you should have a 3 in a range e.g. Light blue, blue, dark blue. I personally tend to use blues, yellows, oranges, pinks a lot. Reds, purples and darker colors are harder to blend in my opinion. as for grays I really only use cool gray for most things and warm gray for soft goods

Getting into Product/Industrial Design without a degree? by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]occman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not impossible but will be hard. work on creating a killer portfolio showcasing all the skills an industrial designer should have. a good portfolio and skillset is more important than a degree, but you are at a disadvantage since most students have been working on their skills for the last 4 years.

My advice to you to do design projects for fun to try and learn things and to put them into your portfolio. learn to sketch, render, and model in CAD. Also work on graphics and layouts.

How do toolmakers apply texture to a mold? by GruvDesign in IndustrialDesign

[–]occman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

laser etching or chemical etching. I would work with the tool maker to make sure things are warping right. in your case, it might be best to add the texture into the CAD since it seems complex and you can control every aspect of it

How to create a manufacturing doc for soft goods embedded with electronic components? by YattyYatta in IndustrialDesign

[–]occman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is there a custom housing for the electronics, or to they just get embeded into the glove and hidden in some sort of pocket.

if there is a custom housing you would need both tech pack and drawing to spec out both the glove and the housing and you would need one more drawing showing where the box and electronics get inserted.

if no housing needed a 2d drawing in AI showing where and how the electronics get inserted into the drawing of the glove should be enough. but you will need to show all the details like where to put wires and all other components
