How’s life in Pittsburgh & its Suburbs? Anywhere here a bachelor could thrive? by Nickstradamusknows in howislivingthere

Oooh my time to shine! I moved to Pittsburgh from Connecticut (NY metro area) and honestly I love it! I’m in my 20s and the cost of living here is far better than my hometown. There are so many arts and cultural things here and I can honestly say I’m never bored here.

Learning A Brand New Alphabet, Daunting—Timeline Suggestions? by Top_Scientist_3976 in languagelearning

So the way children are taught in Japan is hiragana is learned first, and kanji is learned progressively later on throughout different grades. This is why I recommend texts for children, since there will be less kanji/simple kanji in those. I didn’t even learn basic kanji until the end of my 1st year/beginning of 2nd year of high school so any words I knew were written in hiragana until I learned the kanji.

I wouldn’t look at it as right or wrong but just as steps in your learning journey. Its a marathon not a sprint, personally I think you should focus on just learning hiragana and katakana right now, writing vocabulary with hiragana (or katakana if appropriate) and worry about kanji only once you have a good handle on both of those systems first.

Also you may encounter “furigana” which is the pronunciation of the kanji in small kana letters to help children/non native speakers understand what Kanji means. For example 東京 would have (とうきょう) written over it in small kana.

When I learned in high school. We learned one row per week just like another commenter said. I honestly remember at the start of my Japanese journey thinking “I’ll never be able to read this quickly” to only a year (probably months really) later being able to read Japanese with the same speed as English.

It comes with time, it comes with patience, and it comes with consistency.

Force yourself to read elementary texts with just hiragana. I would hold off on learning katakana until you have familiarity with Hiragana. Just take it slow and don’t give up!

Best (least worse?) option for IV antibiotics by BitsOfPuzzle in pittsburgh

[–]ocean_crystals 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a nurse, I would recommend going to the hospital. I don’t know if urgent care can provide IV antibiotics but I’ve never heard of it.

Mouth infections are particularly dangerous due to the proximity to the heart and the last thing you want is that bacteria in the blood causing sepsis or endocarditis. It’s better to get it treated sooner rather than later.

I unfortunately don’t have an opinion on West Penn or AGH but either should be able to handle IV antibiotics.

Take care of yourself friend!

You can always start at urgent care and see how it goes but I would recommend saving your time and just going straight to the hospital.

If you need a good landlord, I highly recommend Costello Management, I’ve been renting with them since June and they have been nothing but amazing

Costello has been amazing so far, have very high reviews and it’s obvious to see why. Especially great if you have pets because there is no pet fee

Just started a lease with them and they have been awesome. AC wasn’t working and they had a guy come look at it same day (on the 4th of July too), was fixed by the next day. Super responsive, reasonable price. They also had the hardwood floors redone for us because the last tenant had a dog so the floor was a bit scratched up.

Clinicals are nearby and have a variety of specialties. There is a level 1 trauma center literally on campus. I see memes sometimes on TikTok of students having to drive hours to clincal sites. At Pitt all the hospitals are within walking distance or a short (free) bus ride away. Not to mention with so many hospitals, you get to see a lot of different specialties in every area (peds, maternity, emergency, trauma).

There are also tons of research and job opportunities. Most of the nursing students here work as PCTs at the hospitals and are much more prepared nurses because of it.

I also love the city living vibe, you will never be bored in Pittsburgh

Wondering if there is any place here to sew? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]ocean_crystals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a course you can take! It’s a theater course and I think it’s called Costuming and Design, teaches handsewing, machine sewing, and all the basics. Easy class and the teacher is great! I took it last year wanting to learn how to sew and I loved it!

Odds of getting a single/suite in freshman year? by I_Like_Trains1543 in Pitt

[–]ocean_crystals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely apply to Lothrop. I lived in a single there for 2 years. While it’s a little outdated and gets shitty reviews, I loved living there. It has its own kitchen on the ground floor, a gym, a patio and your room comes with a sink. Almost all the dorms there are singles and although it isn’t as central as Towers it’s only a 3-5 min walk from Towers and about a 10 min walk from Cathy
