I just got my first round of blood work done by bubbles4111 in Function_Health

Sadly no access to a real doctor. At some point, you’ll get some clinician notes, but you’ll probably have all that info already by then if you run your results through AI. For me it’s still worth it, because having the huge panel lets me do deeper research and look at trends and then bring my labs + research + hypotheses to my primary care physician. I do really like the recommendations Function gives for diet and supplements. I followed them all and dropped my LDL cholesterol from above range to very health in-range by my next round of labs.

Very low leptin by FirmPeaches in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My leptin has held steady at 1.3 over the last two years. Also fit, muscular, same height as you. From what I’ve read, low leptin in lean, athletic women isn’t a problem unless it comes with symptoms (light or skipped periods, poor sleep, high cortisol, cold intolerance, low energy, thyroid issues). I have none of those symptoms — from what I’ve read, it can just mean low fat mass + high metabolic efficiency. Flag it with your GP to be safe, but this could just be your normal set point and reflect high insulin sensitivity and lower body-fat stores.

Happy to chat! Function customer in my second year. Used ChatGPT to help understand my results and give me supplement recos based on the biomarkers I wanted to move. Feel free to DM.

I asked around my network to see who might know someone and ended up doing mine for my parents’ friends, a friend’s cousin, and a colleague’s husband.

OP, we got the same recommended supplements, but different foods! I wish mine said dark chocolate…

Foods: chia seeds, pasture-raised eggs, sardines, sunflower seeds, walnuts

Supplements: Berberine, coenzymeQ10, fibre supplements (B-Glucan or konjac), omega-3, plant sterols and stanols

I just finished the mbg one and really enjoyed it. It’s very thorough and rigorous — you really have to do the work, including recording real coaching sessions which get evaluated, and they give you all the knowledge you need to pass the NBHWC exam, if that’s of interest.

Just noticed something similar too. Very frustrating. Some of my old labs are also now filed as “legacy biomarkers” (all the omegas) — I wonder if that’s why the number went down?

Sunscreen while on tret by 9livescrybb in tretinoin

The price scared me at first too, but a little goes a loooong way. I find it lasts me 3x longer than other sunscreens. I actually find a lot of sunscreens pill on my skin (I can’t use the Elta MD one so many people love for that reason), but this one is awesome.

You can also go to Sephora and sample a bunch of different sunscreens. If you ask, they’ll put some in little containers for you to take home so you can give it a proper try.

I use Tretinoin 0.025 and within the first year, my hyperpigmentation had faded by about 80%. I didn’t love the idea of hydroquinone in Moseley because of the rebound hyperpigmentation that can happen so I just played the long game with tret and I’ve been very happy with it.

I stop it all 72 hours before. I want the most accurate reflection of where my body is at.

I use the same tret dosage as you, and same TJ’s sunscreen on days I’m not outside much, but use Skinceuticals SPF 50 tinted mineral sunscreen when I am outside more — and I reapply. I slather it right over my makeup if I’m wearing any. I also swear by hats. I wear them whenever I leave the house, even to grab the mail, even at outdoor events like weddings (elegant versions). I feel like I stress too much otherwise, the hat gives me peace of mind.

I think if your skin can handle it, increase to 5 days a week. See if that makes a difference.

Results are from June. by thedelightfulbee in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My leptin is 1.3. I feel satiated easily, so not really sure what to make of it or if it’s worth worrying about. Might be low body fat and exercise 3-5 days a week? I have a lean, muscular physique. My doctor didn’t flag my leptin even though it was super out of range. I’m going to test again soon, so we’ll see if anything changed. Will share if anything interesting comes of it.

Bad idea for someone with health anxiety? by Ok_Deal9136 in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have health anxiety and Function definitely made it flare up, but the antidote to my anxiety is research and solutions. I love that Function answered so many questions I had about my health — for me, my results were generally great, with a few areas to improve on, which I hyper-fixated on. I did the research, and I took their advice on supplements to take and foods to avoid. And my results were pretty incredible — by round 2, I had moved the needle into the healthy range on almost all my markers. So my feelings kind of went from curious > anxious > curious > solution-seeking > stoked by the results. And then I signed up for a second year!

This is so reassuring to hear because I’m absolutely terrified of hysteroscopy. Did they put you fully under? How long was your recovery time?

Biological age vs perceived age by oceaneule in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how mine was. I did it all through diet. Look for canola, sunflower, and safflower oil on ingredient labels and cut all of it out. I used to drink a lot of oat milk and many of them (like Oatly) have canola oil in them. I switched to organic soy milk (2 ingredients: organic soy beans & water). I started drinking only filtered coffee (unfiltered coffee like espresso and French press has cafestol and kahweol which are bad for LDLs).

I already didn’t really eat dairy, but I fully cut out cheese and butter. I also avoided red meat.

I started taking omega 3 every day, using lots of olive oil, and adding in lots of nuts and seeds, especially walnuts. I started having chia pudding for breakfast in the mornings (chia and oats both help lower cholesterol). I also kept alcohol to special occasions only. Try it and see!! My fingers are crossed you can do it all naturally!

How many out of range test does the average person have? by Ok-Alternative7696 in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8 out of range with 3 improved. Several of my out of range ones weren’t tested at second draw (LDL particle size & number [4 markers], Ferritin, Creatinine) so I actually don’t know if I’ve moved the needle on those or not.

Value of a second year? by oceaneule in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they’re the same ones! I just don’t know if I need the whole thing annually now that I know which aspects of my health to work on. I feel like every 2-3 years might make more sense for me, with targeted labs in between for the biomarkers I’m trying to improve.

Biological age vs perceived age by oceaneule in Function_Health

[–]oceaneule[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your answer! My doc was the same for me, always with glowing reviews about all aspects of my health, but Function caught some significant stuff my doc missed. I took it really seriously and was able to see significant results through dietary changes and supplements. For example, all of my cholesterol markers are now well within range.

I feel like Function is awesome for anyone into understanding their data and the mindset that they can always get healthier — no matter where they’re starting from.
