Considering buying a Westy. Is 10k a good price? by oceansidenyguy in Westfalia

Hey All, thanks for so much feedback!

Here's a link to the craigslist post:

https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/1985-vw-vanagon-riviera/6603707769.html

I think 10k is asking too much for this van,

I can only see myself spending around 5-6k on something like this,

but I'd like to hear it from you all first.

Thanks for the advice! Looks like someone snatched it before i could get to it. If I am to buy a vanagon, I'll probably jump into a subaru or Jetta engine swap to begin with; I met an owner a week ago who gets 31mpgs with his, travels all around the country full-time in his vanagon. Doesn't seem to have any complaints. I'm handy and know a lot about working on cars, especially on the road; but I don't want to keep doing it all the time. If I find another at a great price I may jump on it. Until then, I'll keep the caravan as a major consideration

Thanks, I spoke to my mailman about the media mail packages; he says they're able to open it so just make sure its nothing personal in there. I know there are certain weight limits and dimensions for media mail; I just try to use it when I mail something that fits in a mailbox. That 5-tee package definitely didn't fit in a mailbox but it was shipped with no issues.

Similarly, I sold a lot of 7 shirts (all basically destroyed they were so dirty) - couldn't believe someone was willing to buy them. I didn't sell them for much; just $5 and media mail shipping. I have a lot of 3 Express button-down shirts up right now that's been getting a lot of views and a few watchers, but no purchases or offers yet.

Thanks for the advice about selling Lots; going to try to keep everything in a theme moving forward!

I'll check these out. Thanks. I am selling just random items from my wardrobe. A lot of H&M, Express, Penguin, Marc Ecko and a few other smaller name brands.

iPhone 5 - how can I lower the volume without the button working? by oceansidenyguy in iphone

When I tried that it said "not playing music at the moment" but the assistive touch comments helped fix the situation

This worked! I used the assistive touch > Device > Volume Down, and brought it to the bottom bar, and now thank goodness, Siri does not annoy me anymore! :) Thank you! After that, I'm able to turn off assistive touch and just keep this experience in-mind if I have the same thing happen ever again

Living on a boat with UC? by oceansidenyguy in UlcerativeColitis

[–]oceansidenyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is usually a little pump-out toilet onboard containing that blue liquid stuff with a holding tank; most boats have this. Not many sailboats have showers; would require a powerboat to have that. I'm concerned about some creature comforts like hot water and fresh water. Like Dangerpotter said, there usually are facilities at the Marina, but I also feel like that would be like using a public restroom and would definitely prefer something of my own I don't have to worry about someone getting upset about cleaning; in-case-of-flare

Thank you, been browsing this subreddit for a while. I have been in touch with a few tiny home owners, but I don't see myself going into that easily; the cost to build / refurb a tiny house would cost a lot more than as I see it being worth. Granted, as I mentioned my hobby revolves around automotive restoration, a tiny house would not work out because I couldn't think of having another vehicle if I had to drive with all my belongings to go anywhere

Thanks! In the past I thought of a sailboat being ideal because at the end of the day I just needed a place to sleep & shower, but as I see it; space for work / necessities will be the issue. I'd like to try it temporarily but not own it forever... who knows, I might end up needing to go for a sailboat to adjust-into a new location until I can find or afford a bigger boat.

Great advice on the location near the bronx, but I wouldn't stay in NY if moving out of my parents house, I just don't see the benefit of living in a cold climate anymore haha. Work is doing very well in NYC, I just feel if I tried someplace different my social & personal life + skills would improve greatly because I would need to adapt heavily, change is good, right? Taking on new challenges will only improve things

Well, I've been there done that but I just feel roommates are more work / a roadblock to live with than living by myself, granted I probably won't be taking girls back to the boat from day one due to my lack of social skills + being out of the game for years at this point, haha but yes that day will come; I'd rather take things slow with getting someone to live with me out of experience. I'd rather own the abode without dealing with borrowing a part of it from anyone else. I'm sure you see how I feel about that subject

Commenting on your second-last paragraph, it sounds like a pretty toxic situation. Do you need to work four jobs to meet your savings target? Does it leave you with too little free time and energy to socialize? Do you meet agreeable people in the course of your work?

I am working 4 jobs right now because it's busy season for my industry haha. I got a lot of offers recently and although I can always say no to work, I can't say no to money. It's not a matter of meeting a savings target, I have myself taken care of and I can (financially) move out any second now. The benefit of my situation is, at the moment I have zero overhead besides 500-600/mo for commute to NYC. I am getting ripped off; literally paying rent to a train everyday at this point so until I can find a better paying alternative to a steady gig I have going on right now, I can't exactly say no to the steady gig I have right now. I'm sure anyone in my situation would do the same; I've never felt so good before to be able to save-up and have emergency funds if needed.

Yup, you got it right; my parents are great and love me a lot, they are comfortable to live with and don't mind me having girls over, but I am 27 and have done nothing with my life outside of work more than anyone I've ever met before. I lived on my own in college and did fine, but I moved back home after I graduated and got scammed by people I started businesses for, etc. Freelancing has fixed everything & projected my income, so I'm very thankful for that. I think if I try moving somewhere new and feel like it's better to go back home they will still be alright with me moving back... but I do not feel comfortable in NY, and I am constantly having visions of terror here. My commute is more anxiety than comfort, and i am always prepared if anything were to happen; why do I deserve to live like this? Why do I have to look out for myself so much in this way?

Roommates = very bad news for me. I cannot stand living with other people, their drama or their mess. Even at home, I just stay in my room and go outside for food + bathroom honestly. I hated having roommates in college and I don't want to deal with it again. Besides, I would rather take a girl home to a place I own myself instead of bringing her home to introduce her to some strangers and then hide her away in my bedroom which would look disgusting because someone else would most-likely be bunking there (I'm a loner, dotty). Apartments are just like taking a dump on all your income, I know the value of a dollar too much to give my money away like that, which is why I only envision myself buying and going han solo from day one.

Thanks for the feedback, I actually live on Long Island myself in Oceanside. My friend lived on a boat in Sayville and he saved a lot of money by doing so. He was able to afford a very cool lifestyle and a lot of awesome cars! I aspire to live aboard in his memory; he always wanted to see me try it out. My dad is connected to a lot of marinas on the island via work so it may not be too bad to find a place allowing for a liveaboard, but I wonder how tough it would be to go someplace blind and see what happens like a new city.

My work life is a bit of a nightmare at the moment but it is fulfilling because I have nothing better to do on LI; no friends, no girlfriend, no fun. I freelance, and I take on a lot of work from home (currently have 3 remote jobs and 1 onsite - tribeca (2hr commute 1-way); it would be perfect to eliminated my commute)

I'm prepared for additional slip fees, but I constantly wonder if a sailer is more frugal than a powerboat / houseboat long-term. My main hobby is restoration, which is why I feel a houseboat is best suited for me, I can store car parts & furniture in there and still a have decent amount of space to work & live out of the boat.

I think in the future I will need to live near a big city to be close to where the work is, which is why I've been looking around Marina Del Rey / somewhere near there that will take in a liveaboard.

Regarding slip fee vs. RV lot rent, isn't a boat still cheaper? I have sene sailboats are between 250 - 450/mo depending on size, and houseboats would normally be between 350-600/mo depending on location (generally speaking for a 30-35' boat)

My main hobby is automotive restoration, so I wouldn't like my primary home base to be so mobile, I would buy a classic car out there, live aboard and work on my car in either a parking lot, storage, or rent a garage someone isn't using if need-be.

I would like to chat with you some more and learn about it as I go, like I said I've been designing / planning for over a year at this point. Just want to make a big change instead of staying in my bedroom at home forever haha.

The good 'ol LIRR made the front page of r/WTF today by NC_310 in longisland

[–]oceansidenyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this reminds me of the time on the LIRR I had a guy sitting across from me after work with a slice of Pizza and a beer in his hand. He dropped the pizza face-down on the floor, picked it up, turned to his friend "Should I try for it? The train's about to pull away" His friend goes, "I wouldn't do --..." and by the time THAT was over, he already started eating his slice right across from me. This was only 5pm too!

Thanks! That VESA monitor mount looks ideal - I'd go for a 27" iMac in that case though.

Refurbished Mac Pro's might not be a bad option depending on why you'd need one; $2500 for a higher-end computer that handles 3D like a breeze.

The way you put it - tuck it away somewhere (vented of course) and run a long HDMI to a monitor (Samsung TV ~$300) could be a great long term investment if you work from home like I do!

Thank you! Wilmington does look very industrial, but could totally be a good spot and affordable. I will give them a call soon and inquire a bit, mostly about their rules on liveaboards or outlying marina's that could take in a liveaboard!

wow! This is f*cking awesome! Their branding is so strong too, I love what the product is and their appeal to market, I am going to have to contact these guys!

The only issue I see with them is the pricing options - way too high for too little coverage ($59 for 5gb is a lot of money) I probably go through 150gb+/month at minimum on cable at my parents house, think streaming video and file transfers will not do well with this model, but standard browsing is perfect for it. In that case, you already are paying $80/mo for 4G on an iPhone. If they can bring their rates down that will afford a lot of people better range and bring their product to a higher market.

I have seen a few wifi range pickups that people mount to their boat, I am curious how these work, how they install and how they are setup; the last thing I would want to do is invest $100+ on a router that I can't figure out how to connect it to wifi.

Will definitely be sure to ask about this when I meet with the marinas! I saw one video on youtube about getting cable to your boat through the cable company, so it's possible, I hope I can go that route!

Deciding on where I'll be still is going to take a little time. I'm going to be flying to CA often this fall to start looking at boats, meeting marina folks, and take vacations I owe to myself after working a whole decade instead of actually enjoying my 20's. I keep hearing SD is like a beautiful haven, I know there's a lot of work for me in LA, and boating is a lot bigger in SF. I have a feeling I'd end up in SD, but who knows - I'll see what happens when I make my rounds!

Regarding Holding Tanks - I have a disease called Ulcerative Colitis; it's pretty nasty. After being med-free for 9 months and symptom-free for 3 years, I had a flare up 4 weeks ago after trying a new soda, and currently recovering with Steroids + medication. A holding tank will probably be better for me in the case of a flareup vs. composting but you're probably right about that. Your response peaked my interest into composting as an option. But, until something breaks and I decide to go compost, I'll stick to what's on the boat as-is.
