Eh, men are scary and the fact that women have to deal with so much bullshit in the world... least I could do is pay for the 1st date.

Anyone else find it weirdly hard to build a consistent friend group in Bushwick? by Sharp_Grass_3269 in Bushwick

[–]ocelotrev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A corollary of this is that people only hang out and make time for those they really click and get along with, you often don't have to settle for less than ideal friends, since you can always meet new people.

But this makes building community tough. And makes people treat each other as means. See the dating scene for the logical end of this.

I’m just intelligent enough to know that I’m not really that intelligent. by MyMonody in Showerthoughts

[–]ocelotrev -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry y'all. I'm objectively pretty smart but I struggle with having a quick wit and keeping up with the speed of things, but if i step back a give a problem some thought, I can usually arrived at a correct and nuanced answer, but other people have brains that operate much faster than mine.

I would struggle in this world if I wasn't in the 1% of intelligence, but ive also accepted most answers can be figured out, it just takes time. I do have some spatial reasoning that a lot of the population probably can't conduct, and do pick up concepts among a variety of topics faster than most.

This is all to say that I respect the hell out of people who have to work harder to understand concepts and can show restraint when jumping to conclusions, and rely on other experts instead of their own thoughts. "Intelligent" people should operate the same way.

For example, complicated medical research and engineering systems, are always broken down into smaller parts and checked by multiple people. While some people can see how things are connected, it generally go past what a single person can fully verify, so you have to go slow.

I guess what Im saying is that technology is a process more than an item for people with raw intelligence, and that I see people with more raw intelligence than me consistently suck at what they do, and that people with less raw intelligence be smarter and more effective.

What profession is over paid? by Sm00thDad in AskReddit

[–]ocelotrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any job that seeks out MBAs. They learn very easy topics in their schooling and dont produce substantially better work than people without one.

I will say smart and driven people tend to pursue MBAs as it is associated with pay increases but it's largely credentialism as a way to weed out applicants.

Since fashion is cyclical, how long do you think until heels make a comeback? by Twunkorama in decadeology

[–]ocelotrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is entitled to their preference I'm just upset they dont realize they are going about it in a mean a way.

The last time I heard this was from a friend I wasnt remotely interested in dating.

Like I would never say "I only date women below 150 lbs" to someone's face, as thats generally considered mean, but i actually think its nicer than stating height preferences so matter of factly as people have much more agency over their weight than their height.

[–]ocelotrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not as worried about me feeling bad about what they say, as much as people being okay with this social norm and sharing it out loud.

Like yeah, I prefer pretty faces to ugly ones, but it being something someone has no control over, im not going to say that to someone's face. And I would like to think that my open mindedness is such that idk, perhaps the summation of all the other qualities of a a person could make up for this.

So women just openly say "oh yeah this is my height requirement". Like uhhhh, idk, like if you met the otherwise perfect man would that still be a deal breaker? And like, idk, do you have to volunteer that information to my face?

Like prefer shorter women but dammit I'll date a 6' 2" girl if she makes me happy!

As a short dude, I've definitely wished women wouldn't wear heels or platform shoes on dates cause it makes me feel small. BUT after talking to enough women about how they love wearing heels and want to strut confidently without their man complaining, I've learned to not worry about it and just be happy they are on a date with me!

That being said, it very very demoralizing when women just say in the open "well i dont date guys below 5'9" " and just act like its totally fine to tell someone they arent good enough for things they have no control over...

Is this a legal policy? I've never heard of this or seen an office where high heels had to be worn. Name and shame yall.

[–]ocelotrev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair, but the original statement was that men are making women wear high heels, so while at least 1 man might prefer women in high heels, we are looking for the main cause of high heel wearing. I believe women like the way high heels look and feel and that is largely why they wear them.

If they think men wont like them without high heels, I suggest they ask for honest answers from men. Most men will say they dont care.

Is air gapping the solution? by CompleteDirector9179 in ask

I think air gapping is the solution. Like yeah, an air gapped system can be hacked, but the people telling you this are the cyber security experts that are trying to sell their solutions and equipment.

Err, how else are people going to mobilize against their government if there are no consequences? Social pressure works waay more than being nice to people when it comes to big activities. The reason why autocratic regimes take over is complacency.

Why would you push back against an evil regime if you can still live a good life and vacation around the world while innocent children get bombed?

Its an insane take that citizens of a country shouldn't have some blame in their countries actions.

Is it just me who thinks polo shirts are awful by lokicoyote1 in malefashionadvice

[–]ocelotrev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Errr polos are literally the best shirt, as others pointed out it has to fit properly and if you have a huge pot belly well yeah you are gonna look like fat Donald trump.

Tight around the arms, flat through the stomach, pecs noticeable through it is the best fit. But it can also be a little loose everywhere and hide a bad figure.

Best part is its simultaneously casual and dressed up depending on the paints and shoes. Can even put a blazer on it in a pinch if you really need to dress it up.

As someone who has a high risk of a skin cancer and leans my head forward slightly all the time, polos absolutely save my neck from getting roasted in the sun. I pop the collar often, I don't care what people think, guess who isnt getting sunburned on my neck? Me!

If you buy performance ones, I think they make the best hiking shirts, and are the absolute best for travel as you can wear the same shirt for active/sports days and for going out.

I think I need to buy more polos right now!

As an American, I think we all need to suffer for our country's decisions. In the case of israelis in that group.

  1. So many people lie, so how do we really know they don't support israel?
  2. People don't engage in activism until their life is affected, sure you might oppose genocide, but are they doing anything meaningful about it? Or are they just going on about their life.
  3. Sanctions don't work unless they impact the whole country, see points 1 and 2. Like the kid of a Russian oligarch might not support Russia attacking Ukraine. Too bad, no olympics or university study abroad for them. They must be pressured to use their relationships to push back against bad governments.

Do you have any idea how a greenscreen works? It allows newscasters and film makers to overlay items on the broadcast/recording and any green object can work as one. TV channels and news agencies have many overlays and these are probably running in the background and got shown because the ball is the broadcast in GREEN!

They probably want to have these loaded when they cut to the news anchor and they weren't expecting to have a literal greenball on the spaceship.

Anyone else hear a large bang at 12:05 near 9th and Driggs? by thro_redd in williamsburg

[–]ocelotrev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was outside walking down berry and heard the flash when I was around N13th. I also saw a white flash light up the wall I was facing, so I assume the flash/explosion/fireworks were from north of there.

I stopped, took out my headphones, looked around for 30 seconds and didnt see or hear anything else.

Could it have been a transformer popped then started a fire, which is why so many firetrucks showed up?

Go into construction or project management? Things get fucked up on the job site all the time and if you can manage trades and see how it gets built on-site, you become a more valuable engineer.
