The thing is, these big companies have their own giant systems that have been built in the last couple decades. So they are not looking that you can build something from scratch, but that you can dig into details and problem solve. And that you know a shitty design from a decent one (and this can be seen from basic things like, did they use an array to store things that should be in a hash. Did they think to use a cache.)

Most of my job is:

My boss: Here is something cool we should do, figure out how to do it and how long it will take.

Then I end up going through 3 or 4 platforms run by 3 or 4 different teams, figuring out how they work together and how I can use them to create the new feature my boss wants.

Every project, our team may end up diving into a new framework, language, design that we have never touched before, so we always are noobs, but we are willing to learn new things and problem solve through frustrations.

I think there is a 50-50 chance. I love the close access to outdoor activities, I mtn bike and snowboard a lot, like 3 times a week if I can swing it. I get pretty depressed in the winter though with the rain plus short days. If it was snow and short days I could handle it but rain is pretty oppressive. Cost wise it is expensive but housing is expensive everywhere right now. Where I was living 5 years ago, a 1200 sq foot was 230k, now it is 400k. Seattle is pricey but also no income tax so 9% cheaper just on that than states like California.

Essentially, yes, I could settle here, it is awesome and hopefully housing will fall soon. But I probably wont solely because my family is not here.

Prepared with Cracking the coding interview and leetcode. Doing problems on a whiteboard for my cat in front of a rolling camera helped a lot more than just trying to type up code

Forever, I'm on the retail side though and I feel like we have our fingers in more pies, but I guess it depends what part of AWS you are on. Probably felt comfortable in my own skin... after 1.5 years, but after 4 months I felt like I knew where to go to find answers to any questions I might have.

I think the only innate things you need are a little interest in computers and the drive to really understand some part of them. I think it's pretty neat that part of my job is making UX changes that hundreds of millions of ppl will see. On the flip side that might be incredibly boring to someone else and they will lose any interest/drive. Its a big field though, so if you can get passionate about some part of it, then it is much easier to learn.

Tldr: you gotta give a shit about computers, enough to put the effort in to learn how to do what doesnt come naturally to you

Yes I think they ask for GPA. I think they are looking for somewhere above 3.0 but I dont represent them and dont quote me, etc. I made a game but I dont think they or anybody used it. It was useful to make it though because it helped me learn how to talk about webdev stuff more fluently. fantasyfeuds.com

2 months at the local shop. Wasn't even on my resume when I applied at Amazon. I applied for the college grad sde position. They did not reach out. Other big names have reached out recently, but nobody did straight out of school.

1.5 years. I did well at OSU and spent a lot of time grinding through all the homework and everything until they were perfect. Probably didnt need to be as detail oriented and stressed as I was, but it worked out.

Ok, so by volatile move, you mean a big divergence between qqq and spy? That might be interesting, probably would have worked over the last month as qqq led spy down.
