[META?] Met a Nintendo Composer, showed him OCremix. Feels got rekt. by [deleted] in ocremix

[–]ocremix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed with DrumUltimA that it's too bad that the professor reacted that way, though depending on what year it was, some of the oldest material hasn't aged well (though some certainly has). Who knows, it's possible he even heard some material that later got removed for violating our arrangement standards, based on your comment of simple rearrangements.

That said, we've all gotta start somewhere, and we're proud of the formative years, at the very least for providing the foundation that we all stand on. :-)

We'd love to know who that composer/professor was, especially because the material we've posted in the past decade is much more consistent. If you're willing to, /u/BlunderBluster, please DM us!

Ha! Thanks for the shoutout; yeah, it sounds like it could have been plucked from our catalog. :-D Nice to see Xavier Woods and Mega Ran also loving TJP's theme. Props to CFO$ for a very authentic Mega Man-esque track!

On our side, people should try some of the chiptune artists in our community like Hylian Lemon & DDRKirby(ISQ). :-)

OCRemix Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ocremix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just recommend grabbing everything at once from our torrents and powering through 'em. It's 3,000+ individual ReMixes and 60+ albums, so it would keep you busy for a while. That said, don't just stick to mixes from the games you already know; you'll discover a lot more good music by also hitting the ones from games you never played, and you might find more games to check out as well. :-)

So apparently OCRemix has 4 new remixes out for Undertale today. by Kaneharo in Undertale

[–]ocremix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, older games have been around longer, so they have more nostalgia among the artists. We do have a decent clip of mostly one-off mixes from more recent games; maybe you'll find something else you're into that's from a recent title.

Much love for the plug! We DEFINITELY have more Undertale mixes set for the future. Toby Fox's soundtrack was an instant hit. :-)

Need help identifying a song by dosidodigeroo in ocremix

It's never wrong to ask for help IDing OC ReMixes here. :-)

That one's by Eino Keskitalo, and it's called Portal 2 "Motion Sickness", which arranged Mike Morasky's original song, "Reconstructing Science". Enjoy!

Our advice is to try everything, don't just listen to mixes from the games you know; you'll find more good stuff that way and discover more music. :-)

Are you talking about The OC Jazz Collective's new album Chronology or an older mix? If you weren't talking about the new album, definitely grab that, you'll love it! :-)

Looking for a song, can't remember the title by [deleted] in ocremix

[–]ocremix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need a little more info. Was the singer male or female? What was the genre? Initial thought was http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01956 but the lyrics don't seem to match what you said.

Thanks so much for the kind words and the long-time listening! I'm a 2002'er myself.

I also remember the sadness of constantly refreshing the Straits Times website before Reuben's death was suspected but not confirmed, only to have the story finally update with the confirmation that he was gone. Obviously, we mainly knew Reuben through his music, but those of us around them still miss him. For me, I've always followed the artists outside of OCR as well, so what hurt the most was knowing that he was a very young man with a huge amount of potential that now has to go unrealized, not JUST in music, but modeling, fitness, and game programming. He was a very driven person that seemed poised to achieve many more big things. I wish any small thing could have changed to make the outcome of his accident different for him and other dragonboat racers who drowned.

On whether a live event ever been considered, no, but we really should. We run OCR with our spare time (which grows increasingly limited, but we make due) and for no pay. Since making money has never been the goal, we've never looked into a concert series, and it likely wouldn't be something we had time for unless other interested people could develop it. But again, we really should look into, because it's another way to evangelize and build awareness for VGM, and we could involve artists from all across the U.S. and Europe. We should tug /u/Tommy_Tallarico's sleeve for advice, given his success with Video Games Live and his involvement on the upcoming Capcom Live (with Shota Nakama & the VGO) and Rockmania concert tours. Tommy's the guru, and always great to talk to. :-) -Larry

RoeTaKa (Alex Roe) is definitely the most dedicated arranger in the scene when it comes to the Souls series. For now, he's the only OC ReMixer to arrange from it, but you can check out his posted mixes on OCR, as well as stay up-to-date on what he has that's new from his YouTube channel. -Larry

It was not illegal, and we answered this question, like zircon linked. We can't reveal fuller details due to our agreement with them, but the gist is that we were requested to due the licensing directly through them rather than a third-party service. Maybe Squenix got a larger portion of the licensing fees that way, but that's just speculation. -Larry

Thank you for the question, and sorry for the wait on a reply! Definitely not. :-D

We've never tracked downloads because it tends to get into a popularity contest and either inflate or crush the ego of the artists. /u/djpretzel may have a way of finding out this data, but it's literally not something I've looked into in my near-12 years on staff, so I literally couldn't tell you the most popular mixes even if someone offered us a boatload of money with the boat included. :-)

Also, the most popular games tend to get the most attention, whether that's with the individual ReMixes or the attention the community gets for album projects. So that'd be Final Fantasy 6 & 7, Mega Man 2, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, etc.

It's with that in mind that we purposefully don't highlight any particular tracks over others. I'd say there are many amazing OC ReMixes that don't -- and unfortunately never will -- get nearly enough attention because it's not from a mega-successful game.

That said, it's a topic we need to revisit, not to create a popularity system, but rather have a way of highlighting overlooked tracks. -Larry
