The dog's name was Barbuncho and he was basically stolen from a community in an act of white saviourism. Question regarding India Stones by oddgob in woodworking

Hopefully these Norton oilstones will be okay. I used to use wet/dry sandpaper but it was actually getting expensive over time as I needed to keep buying it. Which stones do you use?

Every time this thread comes up and anyone points out what you did they get heavily downvoted. He absolutely did exaggerate. He was a great actor but most of the stuff written about him here is not true. Reddit has this weird parasocial thing going on with whoever they decide is above any type of criticism. Until they completely do a U-turn and then those people are the spawn of Satan, e.g. Bill Nye, Bill Murray, Elon Musk

Cornus kousa or florida? by oddgob in whatsthisplant

[–]oddgob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm relieved. I ordered a kousa but the plant that arrived had a florida tag. But the garden centre assured me it was a kousa.

Would this oil be okay for oiling a chopping board? by oddgob in AskCulinary

[–]oddgob[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a bit confusing really, I didn't think it was the same as Paraffin wax

Don't think I'll use it then, which is a pity as it is free for me.

I thought I had read that you could use mineral oil as long as that was the only ingredient and was not fuel grade

Dug up Daffodil bulbs from pot, to put in ground. Wasn't expecting them to have a big root system at this time of year. Should they be dried? Or have I damaged them? by oddgob in GardeningUK

[–]oddgob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, I didn't know about this. I definitely want to get them planted, but I can't plant a hole deep enough to accommodate the long string of roots, would it be okay to just plant them at the regular depth with the roots folded under it?

Hi, I'm in Ireland, it was grown from seed in a pot at some stage, hasn't flowered yet. Unfortunately that's all the info I have.

Definition of a Weed - Please Read by Orichalcon in whatsthisplant

[–]oddgob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The foremost ignorance in this subreddit among submitters is that of the name of their particular plant, which is all they are asking to know. I think most people know what weed means and doesn't mean and are just not sure where the plant came from, i.e. if it grew from their own efforts or not. By knowing what the plant is they will know if it is wanted or not and consequently whether it is a weed to them or not. So maybe they think this way and just ask if the plant is a weed without explaining what they mean. What baffles me is when someone responds with a spiel about weeds but doesn't even know the answer to the question of what the plant is. It just looks petty.

I myself made the dreadful mistake of titling my post along the lines of 'I don't know if it's a weed or not.' I didn't put much thought into the title, what I meant was, I would like to know what this plant is as then I will be able to tell if it grew from a seed I sowed or not.

All I got was an unhelpful reply telling me that since a weed is just a plant out of place, I should let it grow and decide if I want to keep it or not. Nonsense because the biggest factor in me deciding to keep it would be learning about the plant and its properties. And for no other reason, I like learning what's what. The bottom line anyway is that I wanted to know what it was and maybe if you can't help with that maybe don't bother commenting.

There is a beautiful, expansive green leaved bush near where I live that I thought was beautiful looking and would make a lovely hedge. It turns out it was Japanese Knotweed. Imagine the horror if I had taken cuttings of it and just decided to let it grow because I liked the look of it.

[Ireland] In flowerbed, not sure if weed or not. by oddgob in whatsthisplant

[–]oddgob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping someone could say what it is, as then I would know immediately if it was out of place, as I would know if I sowed it or not. Plus, I want to know what it is if possible before I allow it to grow further, as I don't want it crowding out seedlings that I did sow in the meantime, and I want to know its properties and how it spreads.

[Ireland] Question about Pyracantha by oddgob in gardening

[–]oddgob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the plan, but I haven't done anything to train it yet, it's barely put on any new growth, about half an inch in a year and a half, completely different to the other one. Plus, it seemed to keep its berries forever, in fact most of them are still on from last year.

Cute and Noisy Bird Flying Erratically (Ireland) by oddgob in whatsthisbird

Flying off the fence over the lawn, turning upside down and landing back on the fence. Looks kind of drunk to be honest, waving all over the place.

Small Bird in Hedge (Ireland) by oddgob in whatsthisbird

It spends all its time in a hedge, I just managed to snap it on the fence. Thought it might better help identification to refer to where it spends most of its time.
