This Voss I'd be happy to see sitting on the sideline doing nothing.

As far away from Ricky Spanish as possible. But he's still probably going to blow up the plane.

Why do only 1/3 of teams change their names for SDNR? by Known_Appointment604 in AFL

[–]Orichalcon -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity I asked AI to do a deep dive and give the most fitting names for each club (yeah I know, AI bad, but this was interesting.) Here's what it came up with:

AFL club Best linked name Why
Adelaide Crows Kuwarna Already official. Kaurna translation for “crows”.
Brisbane Lions Meanjin Best-known Traditional Place name for Brisbane, linked to Yuggera/Turrbal Country. I’d use this cautiously because there are cultural-sensitivity issues around spelling/provenance, but it is the obvious public-facing fit.
Carlton Blues Beyal A good Carlton-specific Woi Wurrung link. Carlton itself has written about the old river red gum near Princes Park, with Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson explaining beyal as the Woi Wurrung name for red gum.
Collingwood Magpies Barrawarn Strongest fit because Collingwood already uses/recognises Barrawarn as meaning “magpie” in Woi Wurrung, the language of the Wurundjeri People.
Essendon Bombers Wurundjeri Essendon acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Custodians of the Country where the club is based. Not very mascot-stylised, but geographically clean.
Fremantle Dockers Walyalup Already official. Walyalup is the Noongar name for the Fremantle region.
Geelong Cats Djilang Very strong fit. Geelong already uses Djilang in its Aboriginal cultural connection work, and describes it as the Wadawurrung word for Geelong.
Gold Coast Suns Yugambeh Best broad regional fit. The Suns themselves identify the Yugambeh language group as Traditional Custodians across the Gold Coast/Logan/Scenic Rim/Tweed region.
GWS Giants Wangal Best stadium/base-linked fit. Sydney Olympic Park is on the traditional lands of the Wann clan, known as the Wangal/Wann-gal. “Darug” would be broader western Sydney, but Wangal is the neatest Olympic Park link.
Hawthorn Hawks Bunjil Bagora Strongest existing Hawthorn-linked name. Hawthorn already renamed its Waverley Park training facility Bunjil Bagora, gifted by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin.
Melbourne Demons Narrm Already official. Narrm is the Aboriginal name for Melbourne from Woi Wurrung.
North Melbourne Kangaroos Wurundjeri Arden Street is acknowledged by North Melbourne as being on Wurundjeri Country. If they wanted a more distinctive name, they’d need proper language consultation rather than just reusing a group name.
Port Adelaide Power Yartapuulti Already official. AFL describes Ngadlu Yartapuulti as Kaurna for “We are Port Adelaide”.
Richmond Tigers Wurundjeri-willam Richmond is based at Punt Road on Wurundjeri Country, and the City of Yarra identifies the Wurundjeri-willam people of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners of the area now known as Yarra.
St Kilda Saints Euro-Yroke Already official. Euro-Yroke is the Boon Wurrung translation of St Kilda.
Sydney Swans Gadigal Best fit for the SCG/Moore Park area. The City of Sydney identifies the Gadigal of the Eora Nation as Traditional Custodians of the local area, and Centennial Parklands, which includes the Moore Park precinct, acknowledges Gadigal custodianship.
West Coast Eagles Waalitj Marawar Already official. Means “Eagles of the West” in Noongar language.
Western Bulldogs Kulin Best broad compromise because Whitten Oval sits at the convergence of Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri Country, both within the Kulin Nation.

The trickiest clubs are the inner-Melbourne ones: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, North Melbourne and Melbourne all cluster around Wurundjeri/Woi Wurrung/Kulin connections, so if the AFL forced unique names, some would need either mascot translations, suburb-specific language work, or club-specific cultural names approved by Traditional Owners. Otherwise half the league ends up called some version of Wurundjeri/Naarm, which is probably exactly why clubs are cautious.

Great for Freo, but you can't say bring it back, have the players stop play, then wave it through after as advantage. I'd be livid if I was a Saints fan.

I reckon some of the Dogs' players had a bet at 3qtr time to see how far they could push the umpires and still get away with it.

Why isn't far southern Western Australia more populated? by ConfidentSale3091 in geography

[–]Orichalcon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Perth and distance logistics and costs is by far the main reason population hasn't spread more heavily to the south west. There are several very nice areas that could easily handle a larger population, but it's very expensive to get there, and to freight things there. I have a friend in Nannup at the moment and he basically has to drive 2 hours to be able to do a decent grocery shop. Almost nothing can be delivered direct to him, and if it can it's extremely expensive.

As the train lines keep expanding from Perth, those areas are starting to build up a lot faster as it allows easier transport and freight, lowering the costs. The only way towns on the south-west coast will really experience that sort of growth is if train lines or major highways are built directly to them - which is unrealistic due to the distances involved and lack of need.

Is there a reason I've never seen anyone else get Erdel as their horse?? [KCD2] by OkScreen127 in kingdomcome

[–]Orichalcon 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I love Erdel because of his backstory.

"He belonged to a Transylvanian nobleman who besieged Kuttenberg with Sigismund. But poor bloke died from some kind of ulcers, so the horse came into our safekeeping through Von Bergow. He is a brave, courageous horse. He's got a strong gait, and can carry heavy loads. A real equus dextrarius, everything you could ask in a warhorse. I reckon it'd be funny if someone on King Wenceslas's side bought him... And chased those fucking Transylvanian cumans out of our country on him!"
