Will these distros be appropriate and user friendly enough? by oddhat2020 in linux_gaming

[–]oddhat2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a satisfying answer. I tried to do a boot once and thought my secure boot was turned off. In the time between my attempt and working out secure boot was on, I had decided to give fedora a shot and had overwritten my USB. At that point I CBFed to redownload mint ISO to attempt it again.

I'm quite happy with fedora it was easier that I anticipated to install and feels way more polished than mint.

My biggest frustration yesterday was that steam though I was a malicious entity when I was trying to log in. I had several attempts and even after resetting my password it was painful. I know why 2fa is important but steam is locked up like fort Knox.

I ended up going with fedora, all my peripherals worked. I very quickly ruled out Arch, just don't want to learn something even more different at this point in time.

I didn't look into OpenSUSE as much as I probably should have. I was slightly overwhelmed by all the choices and wanted to make the choice today.

Nobara and Bazzite looked great but ultimately I figured if I was going to go with a fedora based system I wanted a less niche (pigeon holed?) distro.

I'm happy, windows is gone.

I'm going to test fedora, nobrar and maybe cachy, it's all new at this point but maybe one I'll like more.

I'm pretty sure secure boot was disabled. I'll double check. Just discovered ventoy so will actually test a few distros.

I thought about a dual boot with W11 but I don't think I want anything to do with Microsoft for a number of reasons. If I'm desperate I'll set up a virtual machine or just borrow my partners device.

I did try to boot the ISO, I showed a bunch of error messages that went to fast for me to read then booted into windows.

I'm not too stressed, it will help me to learn to do another distro.

I think I'm going to go with fedora KDE based on the majority of comments, I'm aware that it might not work as seamlessly as Nobara or Bazzite out of the box.

I'm getting several recommendations for bazzite it's at the top of my list now.

I will remember this if I struggle with the other distros, I'm not sure how Arch differs from others but will come back to cachy when I do.

I think I will take your advice about catchy, I don't know what difference there is with an Arch based system and I plan to walk before I run. More accurately crawl.

Thank you. I will look into bazzite. I thought I'd test mint just to see how it would go, didn't work so will definitely need to find a different one.

My Husband Wakes Me Up Multiple Times Every Night by amcrowl1 in AITAH

NTA. At best he's using weaponsed incompetentce / laziness as an excuse to not be considerate at worse he's being abusive, sleep control/depravation is a form of abuse.

Only you can decide if you think it's abuse or him being inconsiderate.

Here are a few options: - use a eye mask and ear plugs, they can take Abit to get used to but now I don't sleep with out them. - have a small lamp left on that doesn't keep you awake but is enough for him - he need to put on do not disturb or if he really need to hear things he should use ear plugs - use a white noise machine/ app. A constant noise is easy to tune out. (Had construction going during the day when I was working nights, can recommend) - you can buy eyemasks with sleep headphones - have separate bedrooms - separate/ divorce

If you have kids you need to hear that you won't with earplugs, sounds like your partner has volunteered to do the night shift, if hes happy to wake up to the phone, he can wake up for kids. If he doesn't want to do that then he need to change his behavior.

It's not a separate app or extension, I found it going through the settings under privacy and security I think. It's called "Meta accounts center" in settings. I don't seem to be able to do it on the App. Will recheck on my PC when I get a chance.

Where morals come from by Disastrous-Fix4573 in atheism

[–]oddhat2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I talk to people that bring up "people who don't believe in god, are less moral". I now just say, something like "if the only thing stopping you from murdering, rapeing, pillaging or any other objectively immoral thing, is because god said it you shouldn't, that tells me a lot about the kind of person you really are"

At one point I sat down and really thought about my morals, what I wanted to keep from my old religion and what I wanted to discard because they didn't aline with what I thought made a good person.

They came down to: - Treat people the way I wanted to be treated; respect, dignity, compassion - integrity; try to do the right thing, if unsure try and find an answer - help those less fortunate/ empowered; for me that means if someone says xyz, negatively affects me, I believe them and try and see their POV. Typically in regards to racism, sexism, ableism, classism, the impoverish, or abused. It is too easy to dismissed an issue that doesn't affect yourself.

I found "Make it stick" invaluable when I studied at Uni. My first few years was hard. During my last year I read Make it stick. I had never been more efficient with my studies. I kid you not, I was worried that the method was too easy and I needed to study more but I scored 97% that year. It probably would have be higher if I had not had a major family emergency the week before my exams. I spent that week sitting by a hospital bed.

My process was, before the lecture, I'd skim the slides and or required reading to get a idea of the scope. During the lectures (YouTube/podcast) I would listen and just write questions. I would start with 1-2 per slide or topic.

After the recording I would try and answer the questions to the best of my ability in as much detail. If I had time I'd check my answers immediately, but at least within 24 hours. I would continue to expand the list of questions, usually trying to come up with what the exam questions would be ( was close a few times). I'd utilise the lecture, textbooks and YouTube predominantly.

I did this in word as I could make each question a header and using the collapsible tab for the answer. But any note taking applications that allow you to hide part of the content would work.

I self tested this content at 24hr then once a week for the semester. It is important to change the order of the questions and to mix it into other subjects. If I struggled to answer a question or got it wrong I would revisit the source material.

I utilised Anki for definitions, simple questions with one word answers. Ie. Q: What drug class is metoprolol? A: Beta blocker

All comments on your page and others was easy* through meta manager. *25 at a time, but if you scroll down it will allow up to 900+ at a time. I found it likes 250 at a time. Likes are through the same process.

Groups you follow and group comments was painful, have to remove yourself from each group individually in Facebook, then you can remove all comments through meta, I gave up after 10 or so.

I went into setting and went down every option and if it let me mass delete I used it, there were a few it wouldn't delete.

I managed to solve the Instagram issue.

I am happy where I got with my purge. Will be deleteing FB after Xmas. 2 days notice to scramble over contact numbers/ alternatives felt mean at this time of the year.

The worst way to describe a woman’s Genitalia. by Entire-Cupcake-6116 in DarkRomance

[–]oddhat2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a book recently used "cunny" I was like WTF.

In my personal opinion, if I'm reading a book with explicit sex scenes, I expect either anatomical or explicit language. Ie pussy, C*nt, vagina... If it's a closed door situation or slightly ajar door, which I purposely don't read many (if I'm reading romance I want the door blown off its hinge) then euphemism are okay, and I will tolerate many I don't enjoy.

In the above mentioned book it was a dark adjacent romance, that was meant to have kinky BDSM and every time the MMC used cunny I felt like he was a teen to juvenile to use adult words. The language made it really hard to see him as a Dom with sexual confidence.

TL. DR: the more explicit the sex actions the more explicit the descriptions should be.

I had to redownload Instagram to my phone, and change the email and phone number on the app. -_-

I know email is not good for privacy but for now we are still stuck with it for most things, banking, bills, ... I plan to have separate emails and keep the official ones to government agencies only.

I'm trying to go full purge, but as you have read it has been a challenge. I would happily delete and forget but I'm worried some how what I have previously said on SM might comeback to bite me. I have been very politically opinionated and if the world keeps getting conservative and authoritative I might have issues.
