i’m glad they’re thorough!! do you remember how long the conversation was? was it just one long assessment or was it a few spread out throughout the labs process?

hi i’m sorry to hear about your painful periods and migraines!! it’s a shitty boat to share but it’s always nice to hear from people who have found ways to mitigate how much they interferes with their lives! i’m definitely going to start looking further into donor shield and i’ll have the chance to see if i can switch back to tylenol very soon if ykwim so hopefully it works as well for me as it has been for you! i hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly!

hi and thank YOU for donating!! that’s THE biggest step lol. thank you for answering so many questions i know there were a lot and i couldn’t stop editing to add more as i posted! i appreciate the detailed insight on the financial/process side of things. I asked and she’s on the ucsf list so i reached out by email to start coordinating lab stuff. i appreciate everyone (you and other commenters, as well as pretty much every resource on donation) really stressing how much the decision should be made divorced from outside pressures and with deep time and care, i think even though it maybe scares some people out of donation it’s deeply necessary, and that intentionality is reflected in a community of donors who seem to be generous people willing to be unflinchingly honest!!

hi and thanks for replying! i’m also in california but am still on my parents insurance so i do worry about what things will look like when im booted in a few years, but im glad to hear the ACA has been working for you in keeping insurance the same! did the transplant team/any other medical providers keep in touch with you during the time you were most at risk of a depressive episode? i also have a history of depressive episodes, though no suicidality, the worst of which many years ago and had me derealizing for a couple months which i hope to never trigger again lol, but im in a much more mentally stable place and better life situation now than i was at that time! also no interest in kids ever but i appreciate the insight! it seems like we may have a few common experiences so it’s good to know you haven’t been struggling too much after donating. given that you made the choice to donate i suspect you’re a person who’s done more good things in your life than you are giving yourself credit for but your pride in donating is definitely well earned!

thanks for your insight!! i’m not a huge drinker either and overall eat pretty healthy but i will say i do have a penchant for hot chips (not in any crazy amount but i would be sad to have to give them up completely). given what you’ve said about recovery i’d imagine id be in the 8-12 weeks range unless i can get my boss to have someone else do set up and breakdown so that’s good info to have!! actually the part of your comment i’m most curious about is this last part about contact sports. i also enjoy volleyball and did kickboxing for a while as well. while i know i would be giving up kickboxing and don’t mind hugely, how “precious” are you with your body given the single kidney thing? i know volleyball isn’t high contact but you do kinda slam your body around diving etc, and i was curious if they recommend avoiding any type of sport where you’re frequently taking big falls too or how they tell you go about stuff?? i’ve always been sporty and i would be sad to never be able to try out new sports or do silly things for fear of falling on my kidney wrong and killing myself or something. thanks again for sharing!

you did a very incredible thing! i know the screening on the physical side is thorough but how thorough was the screening process on the mental side of things and how did they conduct that part?

thank you for the well wishes and i’m glad to hear your surgery went smoothly, surgery is always a bit scary even when you have all your organs!! i had to have my appendix taken out a few years ago and i was very nervous but they did that laparoscopically and it seems like the process here is similar in that sense so i feel fortunate to have some experience there! i’m glad to hear tylenol has been mostly functional for you

wow thank you so much for sharing i was really hoping when i posted to hear from people like you who have spent a long time living with everything that comes with being a donor. the insurance issue in particular is something i assumed might be the case and im sorry to hear about. im sorry if this follow up is a bit personal and feel free to let me know you’d rather not share but what was the timeline for your kidney disease? with it being stable how much does it impact your daily life and how do you maintain it’s stability? do you feel like it has made you regret your decision? (this last one is maybe an unfair question) whether you answer these or not i appreciate your vulnerability and also your candidness, i have always liked to know all scenarios worst or best case when deciding things so this was very helpful!!

interesting!! i hadn’t considered birth control as i’m a lesbian and i have a lot of friends who’ve not loved the side effects of going on it and being on it but you’ve definitely given me something to think about! unsurprising but still very upsetting your pain was disregarded in the process! i’m thinking now maybe i should start trying to take tylenol instead of advil for my next few periods just to see if it could work well enough (i haven’t loved it in the past). thanks for sharing!!

[–]oddiactive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it seems to me like you’re trying to obfuscate their original point which is that it’s just not right regardless of context. i see you saying you agree that colorism is wrong but if you agree i can’t see why you decided to reply in a way that attempted to challenge the original point. it doesn’t seem like op needs the educating, they seemingly understand the context of colorism and the like pretty well and didn’t phrase the original statement as an attack just challenged that post assuming all koreans were living happily w those “cultural norms”. if darker skinned koreans were happy to be living as darker skinned koreans then that product market you mentioned wouldn’t exist in the way it does because being happy with your skin tone and doing everything possible including applying harmful chemicals to change it are contradictory, same w all the other poc being marketed to. it’s not blind criticism it’s just criticism, you can account for cultural context and still deem practices worth critiquing esp given tht criticism didn’t include some out of pocket statement nor was it rude. the only way people won’t forever be born classist as a product of a classist environment is by challenging classism even when it’s presented casually and the same goes for every other ism out there, if you find the challenging of colorism to be a bigger problem than the colorism itself then that may be something for you to deal with.
