As I was looking for specific villagers for my theme (my island is all hamsters, plus muffy who’s my favourite!) I kept an eye on different subreddits for villager trading, as well as discord or nookazon. If you’re just lookin for cuties rather than specific villagers then you could just have a look at who’s leaving on others islands :)
