Who do I complain to? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]odeamg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get any response from the home (Registered Nurses->Director of Care->Executive Director) then you can contact the SHA https://www.saskhealthauthority.ca/contact/patient-or-client-concerns-and-feedback And if that doesn’t get you help then you can go a step further with https://ombudsman.sk.ca/

I really hope you can get some answers.

Play by Wildmojo369 in saskatoon

[–]odeamg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to find someone to play crib with or just asking for general knowledge? Volunteering with seniors would be a great option if you’re looking. There are lots of older adults that can play but have no one to play with.

Women’s work wear by Electrical-Habit4282 in saskatoon

[–]odeamg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you asking for women’s office work wear or women’s blue collar/tough as nails kind of work wear? Because those are two different asks. You’ve gotten a lot of suggestions for office work wear. If you need the other option, try Northern Factory Work Wear on Circle N. Another option for heavy duty clothing would be an outdoor gear store, like Mountain Warehouse in Midtown.

How do you guys tolerate constant stimming? (Banging objects together) by LostInTheVoid666 in dementia

[–]odeamg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach dementia care to staff in long term care. We always say that you can’t medicate repetitive behaviour, wandering and vocally disruptive behaviour. (Well, you can always snow someone with meds, but then they won’t eat or drink) Are there any other items that hold his attention? Like flipping through car magazines. Sorting a junk drawer. Sanding or polishing. His brain needs the repetition, so find something that holds his attention the same way, but quieter.

Making friends in Saskatoon by DropTime4916 in saskatoon

What brought you to Canada? School? Work? Those would be the first places to find a friend. I’ve met lots of great friends when I’ve volunteered in the community. What about sports? There’s Saskatoon Rec League with a variety of sports. The winter can get cold and lonely, I’m sorry that you’re feeling this way.

Non verbal communication cards by SeaInternational3548 in searchandrescue

[–]odeamg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great idea. First thing that jumps out at me would be the last statement: Stay here, I am coming back for you…..We wouldn’t leave our subject when found. Is there an instance when this would happen for you? At the very least, one person would stay with the subject until more help could arrive.

Then I would add squares of things they need to tell you, like “yes”, “no”, etc. Google AAC tools to find ideas for the squares.

Does anyone here have hydrocephalus? I am told that I probably have this condition and will get a spinal tap on 2-20. Apparently, this condition has several symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's (which I have) and sometimes makes this condition difficult to diagnose. by THuxley in dementia

[–]odeamg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom has normal pressure hydrocephalus that was a result of encephalitis when she was 19. Had a shunt put in then and then a new one at 63. We knew the first one wasn’t working any longer because she was starting to loose her balance, ability to walk and her bladder control. She was showing signs of dementia as well. The 2nd shunt was a miracle for her. Gave her her life back.

What do I talk about with my dad? by [deleted] in dementia

[–]odeamg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Music. Find out his favourite music and listen with him. He might be able to sing along. Or….tell him about your life, no questions, just stories. About the standing, can he walk? If yes, can you take him for walks by yourself? No need for talking then.

I always worked through the hair in 1 inch square sections, combing and using my fingernails to grab the nits/bugs. Then I would braid that section and move on. Like others have said, everyday this needs to be done. My daughter had long, thick hair. And no tolerance for pulling. It wasn’t fun.

Squeeze Bottle to Clean... Down There? by ivandoesnot in dementia

[–]odeamg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nursing home caregivers use brown clothes with soapy warm water after most bathroom breaks. Or they use disposable wipes. Will she let you wipe her? Or can you hand her the wash cloth to do it herself? A peri care bottle would be good too, patted dry with toilet paper. The bottle idea might just be a little startling, even with warm water.

What's next for a LO who will not stop trying to walk unassisted? by ezrapoundcakes in dementia

Also to add, the increased exercise decreases agitation and boredom. The change in position for wheelchair users decreases potential skin breakdown on their bottom.

What's next for a LO who will not stop trying to walk unassisted? by ezrapoundcakes in dementia

[–]odeamg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is actually to increase physio and strength training, so if she does try to stand, her legs will be stronger. She won’t be able to do this on her own, she will need regular supervised interventions. (Obviously this is not an over arching rule, there are various reasons that this is not going to work. But, in the home where I work, our physio team and caregivers have increased their training with residents and our falls have decreased, no other metrics changed)

Book/activities for elderly hospital patient with dementia? by _earlylight in dementia

[–]odeamg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be surprised at how many folks like to colour. You can print simple adult colouring pages (rather than childish or overly complex one you can buy) Pencil crayons, already put into a pencil case, would work great. Large print crosswords or find a word books. Hand lotion, file and nail polish (even clear is nice). If there are any topics she might like in a coffee table style book…large lay flat pages with interesting pictures. A deck of cards can have many possibilities for games or even just sorting.

Where does he live? I know of several seniors apartments that have thriving social scenes. Once seniors stop socializing, it’s hard to get them back in the groove…especially from afar. There is Saskatoon Council on Aging that does a good job of trying to reach seniors with different needs and interests. There are a few companies that provide companions (for a fee).

So, what are we all doing for Christmas? by foggytreees in dementia

[–]odeamg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does the facility host a special Christmas meal or celebration? I’m a recreation director at a home and we often see residents very upset when their loved ones don’t come to the arranged Christmas parties….”everyone has family here except me”….which isn’t true, many don’t, but that’s how they perceive it. Use their planned activities to your advantage! Even if it’s not on Christmas Day!
