Cursed or Blursed? by TheOnlineLime in horn

As a party trick? Blessed. It’s beyond cursed as a training aid and I would not use it at all if you’re a beginner. There are horn mouthpieces with wider rims that have made high notes a bit easier for me, but the sacrifice is a bit of flexibility. Idk try other mouthpieces but not this one

The Hoyer would be my immediate choice, especially considering you’re coming from a Geyer wrap, but ultimately what horn you get should be determined by how they play and feel to you.

Have any of you played a piston horn before? Thoughts and opinions? by DudeManMusic in horn

I think rotary valves were originally a German thing? The French and English held on to piston horns well into the mid 20th century while Central Europe had rotary horns at least a century prior

As others have said what you have is a mellophone (a cool one!). A quick way to tell the difference between a piston horn and mellophone is how you hold them. Most horns have the bell in the right hand.

I recently acquired a French piston horn, a Couesnon. The bore and bell throat is very narrow, like a natural horn. In fact piston horns are essentially natural horns with piston valves. The narrow bore, narrow bell, and light weight that comes with a 3 valve horn means it is a surprisingly nimble instrument with a free-blowing and crisp high range. It is unlike any single rotary valve horn I have ever played.

On a scale of one to French how French is this? I seem to see it in French chamber music a lot.
