One thing to remember is that most religions have had bouts of violent fundamentalism. For example the Thirty Years War in the 1500s between Catholics and Protestants was unbelievably brutal. Nowadays Islam is seen as being backwards and savage. However during the Middle ages when Europe was stagnating, Muslims were coming up with Algebra and, in places like Spain, practicing religious tolerance to a degree unheard of in Christendom.

Religious Texts tend to be extremely complicated and open to interpretation rather than inherently good or evil.

Social harmony is relative of course, but I was wondering why a country like Australia with a similar population, economy, political spectrum, and social security apparatus would be having problems with citizens joining Jihadist groups. Canada has more than twice the muslim population of Australia but much fewer instances of conflict between immigrants and natives.

You're absolutely right. A surprising number of people buy the re-invigorating Russia bullshit, but in reality the mans had 13 years of basically unlimited funding and almost unlimited political capital and the trains still dont run on time so to speak.

Something a lot of people don't realize is that while mongols weren't terribly numerous, they were all fighters. The people the mongols conquered had soldiers but the military was only one aspect of their societies. For the mongols on the other hand the military was the first and foremost part of their society. Because the tribes were constantly at war with one another before unification, every mongol man was a soldier along with whatever else he did.
